Hopefully this spreads to more states: SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California's governor has signed into law a bill that guarantees all students a state-funded meal of their choice, even if their parent or guardian has unpaid meal fees. The measure bans the practice of "lunch shaming," in which students who owe the school money for meals are denied food or given a cheaper alternative meal. Maybe I just didn't see what happens if parents/guardian just refuse to pay meal fees? Put a lien on the adults' income? The bill says "(g) Nothing in this section is intended to allow for the indefinite accrual of unpaid school meal fees." Yep, I know most people are proud/honest enough to make great sacrifices to pay their bills - but there are always those who will indeed see this as a 'free lunch', courtesy of the state.

I'll let you know if I was right.

Yep Shoshone-Bannock. I'm just east of Northern Paiute and south Nez Perce and Lemhi, Blackfoot is super east of me
A lot of the counties in Idaho are named for the tribes.

From what I see they would follow their typical procedures for unpaid bills with the parent/guardian. This is just taking the child out of the equation. You can’t do something negative to a child because the parent didn’t/can’t pay the bill.

This is interesting. You can use your zip code to find out whose land you are on. I thought I was on Shinnecock land but it turns out I'm on Unkechaug land. They are the only localish to me tribe I have not heard of before. So now I know what I'm doing tomorrow while ds is at pre-k.

Thanks - my neighbor's a retired IL teacher and she asked me to read it with her - we both thought the initial story made it sound like opting to not pay for meals could go on forever, which didn't make sense really. A lot of early reaction to the news stories seemed to fall along lines of why would anyone pay, because the stories didn't point out there would still be procedures to follow up on unpaid fees.

While I'm glad kids will no longer be without food, I would rather see a universal policy of feeding all kids, along with the funding to make it happen. While it doesn't make it right, I think sadly a lot of the fights districts get into over school lunch debt, special ed, etc. are because so many districts are just underfunded and strapped for money (e.g., our district had to cut teachers and increase class sizes this past year).

I agree. I hope something like that is in the works too, but appreciate that legislature pounced on this idea what came from a 3rd grader (who used his own allowance to pay off the debt for his class). This was a quick win that will change the experience for kids now while we fix the larger structural problems of why we can’t just feed all the kids all the time.

Had to pick them up at school the following week. However they held them for unpaid fines books that weren’t turned in etc. they also wouldn’t release a transcript

The elementaries in our city all offer free breakfast (eaten in the classroom before class starts) and lunch to all kids because of funding due to being a high poverty area. I love that no one knows who can afford and who can't, because it eliminates one more reason for bullying (outside of the obvious nutrition aspect) I would happily sponsor a family or two for the year if needed. I give my DD an extra whatever is needed or money that she can offer to a kid who might have forgotten or didn't have.

Lighter fare: For kicks and giggles, I texted it to my H without Dave Brown’s tweet to see if he can figure out what’s wrong (he has a near encyclopedic knowledge of naval vessels). Waiting to hear back... Quoting myself because H just texted back: "God did they put a Russian Kirov cruiser on the post" (I know you were all riveted waiting to see if he got it ) Don't sell yourself short. I though ti was hysterical. lOL Glued to the edge of MY seat

Tucker. Fucking. Carlson. WHy does he have a VOICE! He is not a journalist. He doesn't have a degree in anything. He failed to get one in history. Dude is just a loud mouth college drop out with a big microphone to all the dude bros and lower intelligent followers who thinks what he says is both law and fact. He is yet another example of what sets the left and right apart. The left calmly talks about what the issues are and puts forth worthwhile and sensical arguments while the right swears, threatens, and complains about what is going on to scare you into believing them. Carlson is one of the top 5 abusers of that system.

I live in Georgia and just a few days ago the GOP here was blaming the Braves’ playoff loss on the fact that they suspended the tomahawk chop for one game because a Cherokee player from the opposing team was offended. I hate red state life.

I give my DD an extra whatever is needed or money that she can offer to a kid who might have forgotten or didn't have. We do the same. Since DD goes to public and they have a lot of families that can't afford alot we were sent home a flyer stating that teh school provides Thanksgiving gifts of food through the food bank to families in need and it asked how many we need. We looked at each other and said, "Where is the box to make a donation of food to add to these gifts?" Typically we are family that give well over what she needs to cover for 3 or 4 kids that their parent's can't so they can have the experience or food. I am proud to do that and will continue to do so. If you kid can't eat lunch because their parent's can't afford it you better damn will be sure I will send my kid with enough extra for your kid and their class mates if they are hungry too. sheilathetank
