Hi ladies! I've missed you guys. PennyCandy, I'm sorry about the biting and WTF to pinching a kid? I mean wow. I hope they don't follow that advice at the school? The school year is kicking my butt. 2nd grade is no joke on the homework front and I'm already tired of asking her to do it. DD2 is loving Kinder though so that's good. The baby is perfect and hilarious and I love this age :-)

hi, catspajamas2! you can definitely push back on the homework front. do you have an open house soon? I would talk to the teacher about it and say that it feels excessive. oh, didn't you mention at one point that she might skip a grade? if that's so, all the more reason for advocating for her. in any case, there is plenty of literature indicating that homework has no benefit on achievement in elementary school kids.

klw and @vvvvvfe She has to do 20 minutes of reading and 1-2 math worksheets every night. She did skip a grade last year (they moved her to first half-way through K) and the issue is that her writing is behind. Specifically her penmanship. So getting her to fill out the reading log is the problem, not the reading itself (they have to write title, author, start page, end page, minutes read etc.) She loves to read but she told me she is picking books off the shelf with the shortest titles so she can write the log more quickly :-( That bummed me out. The homework is easy its just that I have to get her to re-write half of it so that it is legible. I will probably stop doing that for both of our sakes. I'll ask the teacher about it at open house. I want her to get handwriting practice but it is dragging down her love of learning in a big way. She can square and cube numbers in her head but if she has to write them down the wheels come off.

If she's ahead in math, can she forgo the math worksheets in favor of 10-15 minutes of writing practice/day (reading log + anything else she needs to work on)? Just a suggestion!

potatocakes that's a good idea. Also maybe my standards are too high for second grade handwriting? I doubt it but I'm trying to be optimistic, lol.

catspajamas2, TBH i would just fill in the reading log for her until you can talk to the teacher. that is a lot of stuff to write out, esp if she is reading more than one book in the 20 minutes. DS1's penmanship is not fantastic, either. i do think he got out of practice over the summer as well.

vvvvvfee, good idea. She might not let me but I can offer (she is a rule follower and I don't know what exactly was emphasized in class when they passed out the log). How are the boys doing? Is DS1 happy to be back at school?

catspajamas2, they are good- DS1 is actually happy to be back at school, weirdly enough. he only admitted recently that he really didn't like the teacher he had last year, so i guess anyone else is an improvement. DS2 is his same sweet self and DS3 is crazy clingy half the time and busy tearing the house apart the other half of the time. oh yeah p.s. can't the kids do their homework at after-school care?

I’m glad DS likes his teacher more this year! It’s so hard to know what is going on in those little minds. We have a clingy half monster here too. What a wild ride these 3rd children are turning out to be Re:after care, DD joined the pre-swim team this year and so is in the pool for 45 mins 3 days a week during after care. Between changing swimming and snack it isn’t a lot of time. I could have her not swim so much (just do lessons), but she loves it and I like that she is doing something healthy and active, so I would rather talk to the teacher first if it doesn’t get better. Tonight I just went with the sloppy writing. When we have time I will get her to rewrite but tonight we all needed a little grace.

We had DD1s back to school night (2nd grade) and all the children left notes on their desk for the parents. I saw a big variety in the handwriting skills. Are the children expected to write in the log themselves?

Thanks for asking! She seems to be better this afternoon. She stayed home from school since she was running a fever yesterday afternoon. She woke up a few times between 9 and 12, but then slept until 6. She got up to pee and then couldn't fall back to sleep. I still slept like crap for some reason. Now it's 9:25 and I am in bed already. 😉

Around 10pm, I put his humidifier in his room and he was fine until he woke up at 7:30am. I kept him home from preschool, but I should have sent him because he woke up basically fine. I, too, slept like crap. 🍷Here's to healthier kids and more sleep tonight.

The baby stuff is slowly disappearing. I gave the infant seat, bases, and stroller to someone I met yesterday that was in need. All that's left is clothes and toys and I'll probably donate those as the boys grow out of them. I saved my favorite clothes from the first year from both boys and will have a quilt made for sentimental value. I'm definitely more at peace with being two and through now, but it's still kind of a strange feeling being done with the baby stage.
