We just had a horrible experience at the jump place with a bully and I've realized this is not a conversation I've had with my boys because they did not handle it well. Any body have a book they like that talks about this? A Google search is targeting the elementary school level.
Long story: a kid around M's age was playing with both boys and another smaller kid. I would guess he is J's age but just small. The older kid was being kinda pushy but not awful. Then the small kid ran off and everybody followed. The big kid caught up and pushed him into the net and started hitting him and shoving him back. My boys just stood there. In complete shock but did nothing. I ran up and pulled them away and yelled at the big kid. I told them we dont hit and if someone else is hitting they need to tell me. Big kid ran off for a while then showed back up. Grabbed my boys by the hands and tries to run with them yelling "let's get him!!" I snatched my boys from him and told them we dont chase small kids or let others do it. Big kid ran to his dad, who I now know watched the whole damn thing and didnt say a word. He had a perfect view of the punching incident.
I made my boys sit with me and we talked about it. But I feel like I need to keep having this conversation and they both respond to books with real scenarios they can relate to.

No recommendations, but that is awful. What is wrong with some people?

The children’s librarian in our town is excellent at recommendations. I bet the one in your town could even take a phone call (if you don’t have time to get to the library) to let you know which books might be best suitable for that age group.

I'm sorry, it's extremely frustrating for sure to see other parents do nothing. You did the right thing by getting out of there.
I would think that the elementary books would be fine, M is almost 6 and will be going to school. Even if you get the book and have to explain a couple pages the concept would be he same; see it, speak up and tell someone etc.
