Hi, all. Vent ahead. I am feeling... blah lately. I feel like I am having trouble with balancing work and home. It isn’t even that either part are suffering, but we are about to lose one more person at work, and it will be insane until we replace him. Basically, I am going to have to work a lot of early (5am) days until we hire and train at least one more person (we have 2 openings) which I’m fine with. However, there are a couple 2-3 day trips H has to take for work next month, which pretty much means I have to work at 730, because day care opens at 7. I cannot physically get to work until then when H can’t take the girls to day care. I told my boss about that and asked her if I could work 7:30 on those days. She said she will do her best but she can’t guarantee it. I have no idea what I’m supposed to do if she schedules me at 5 am and H is OOT. Our backup sitter probably won’t be willing to come at 4 am, and even if she were, I would have to leave work to get the girls to day care when it opens, unless I want to pay for full days of double care. Another option is to just tell my boss I can’t physically get there until 730, and hope that I don’t get enough marks against me to threaten my job. I mean, we are short staffed, and my training is very specialized, so I don’t think I could lose my job, but I hate even having to think about it. I don’t have a solution. For now I’m just hoping she can schedule me at 730. I’m stressed about it, and trying to convince H not to travel for now unless really necessary. Which he already does. If you read that, you deserve a cookie! Ugh, that is frustrating! I hope your boss comes through for you and realizes it isn't that big of a deal for an adjusted schedule those days. They obviously don't want to lose you too! spacecadet, ahh, that all sounds stressful. I get annoyed having my car in the shop for a day! Balancing everything is hard, I can commiserate with that. I just rescheduled Jojo's 18mo shots because of a work conflict and so now they're almost 2 months later and then I realized that day isn't much better for work. DH should be able to take her at least.

thatgolfb, I’d hold firm on not being able to get there at 5 in those days. I hope your boss comes around. Being a working parent is really tough to juggle sometimes.

Dang that’s rough thatgolfb. It seems like you’re always willing to pick up and take the early shift at your job so hopefully your boss can accommodate your needs. Work has been crazy for me lately too. We’ve had a ton of people leave. I’m the most senior RN at the whole clinic and I’ve only worked here for 6 years- kind of nuts. My boss just emailed all of us and said someone needs to pick up the weekend of May 4/5. If no one volunteers, they will pick a name out of a hat and that person will be forced to work. I really hope I don’t have to because we have Ds1’s bday party that weekend.

thatgolfb I'm sorry for the stress. It seems really unreasonable that your boss can't schedule you at 730 for only a few specific days- you didn't ask her to never schedule you early. pootsen I would tell your boss that you absolutely cannot work that weekend. You volunteer for extra shifts frequently it seems, I would hope your boss could just leave your name out of the hat.

I'm a so lucky/thankful that my workplace seems to be very understanding about needing time off for parenting and doing things for my FIL. I have to leave early today to pick up DD because DH has a meeting re: his dad. Nothing major, just needs to get him sorted out with a wheelchair and a few other things since they are currently on a 3 month loan. The nurse from the hospital went to visit FIL yesterday though and said she was shocked by how well he was doing and how much he was doing for himself, she says it basically never happens that amputees show so much improvement on their own out of the hospital (once they've decided they are not "rehab-able"), so who knows! He really likes his new place, there are constantly things going on like music performances and wine tasting.

I'm sorry about the work stress thatgolfb. I hope they are accommodating and can get some one new hired and started soon. I'm glad your FIL seems to be doing ok and that he is adjusting to his new place blabbermouth. I hope someone else steps up to work that weekend pootsen.

Thanks, ladies! My boss has honestly been wonderful when it comes to scheduling around my parenting needs. She is understanding, and it was especially apparent when I had terrible morning sickness.
We are just generally going to be in a bind for the next few weeks. One person is taking a long vacation, another is taking a shorter but overlapping vacation, and one of the other guys that does their same duties is leaving after this week (which is the piece of the puzzle that wasn’t planned for when people had their vacations approved). So there are a couple days where I have to be early because they have to do those other duties at a specific window of time in the day (I am not trained in that particular area). So, I get it. She has to look out for the needs of the lab. But I obviously can’t leave my kids unattended in the early morning hours, so I may just have to get things started 2.5 hours later than normal.

One position has been open since my coworker retired in October. My department, flow cytometry, is a very specialized subset of hematology, and they want someone with training. Because many people with my certification, CLS, are coming up on retirement age (there was a huge training program in the 80s/ early 90s, in particular a lot of techs came over from the Philippines as part of a recruitment effort), there is a shortage everywhere, especially of specialized techs. Coupled with that is the fact that we, as a nonprofit public hospital, don’t quite pay a competitive rate (although we do have a pension), and woof. We are desperate.
The position that my current coworker is opening up is a lot less specialized, and there is more automation with an easier and faster training, so I’m hoping they get someone in soon. My institution is SO FREAKING SLOW to hire though. When I graduated from the program in mid Sept, it took me until mid Nov to start.

My coworker who is the most “senior” has been here only a few months longer! Crazy. We do have our lead tech who has a long history of working in the field, just not at our lab until more recently.

Hugs, thatgolfb! I hope your boss is able to make the schedule work. cdnfarmgirl - oh no! FX everyone is feeling better fast. Glad your FIL is doing well, blabbermouth! I suspect I'm coming down with something. I just have that wet-towel-around-your-head feeling. Blah. N's follow-up to make sure his ear infection cleared is tomorrow, but H should be able to take him. H's work sucks and so he finally shaved. It's basically a walking advertisement to everyone at his job that he's for real looking for something new. He hopes it will spur his boss to make the changes literally everyone there have been telling him to make. (I know I'm biased because he's my H, but his boss really is a moron.) I haven't seen him yet, and I support him doing it, but he looked SO GOOD with a beard. *sob*

Most places tend to be strict about facial hair - if a place even allows you to have it, you basically have to walk in with it fully grown. You can't just decide to not shave Monday morning and have stubble and half-growth for a few days. (At least, that's what H has told me.) Vacation beards FTW.

We have a solution- woo hoo! My boss said on those days when I have to come in at 7:30, she will just have someone else come in early and then I will take over for them while they move on to another on of their tasks. I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, since we have done this before. I'm relieved!

It's been a crazy few weeks over here. H's truck has been in the shop for about a month and a half now waiting to get fixed after getting hit backing out of our driveway. We ended up buying a cheap car from a friend of his to tide him over and it needs a decent amount of work. Then we had storms come through and it looks like we need a new roof. I have been looking for a new daycare for L because the lady who watches the kids now is going back to work and not watching kids anymore. She is stopping at the end of June. I did find someone close to home with availability but not until school starts in August, so we have a gap to fill somehow. DS1 starts pre-k in the fall and we need to find before and after care for him somewhere too. Work has been pretty busy as well. I hope things slow down soon and we can get some things figured out. L is doing pretty well but he has started throwing some pretty big fits when he doesn't get his way. I am afraid that he is going to hurt himself the way he flings his body around. He still isn't talking much yet, but he is good about leading me to what he wants. I am hoping I start to recognize some words soon though. I hope everyone is doing well. Aside from the lack of sleep and sickness, that is. AJ throws major tantrums too but they're not at anything specific. He just mimics ds3 so he will just throw this massive fit for no reason at all and it's pretty hilarious to watch lol

spacecadet N doesn’t say Anything either. I’m trying not to worry but my other two were clearly saying 2-3 word sentences by now so it’s hard. But yes- he is VERY GOOD at dragging me around to show me what he wants. lol.

N is better. DD woke up this morning and was like “I’m all better mommy. My stomach doesn’t hurt at all”. And she’s been fine since. So it was literally like a 8 hour flu bug. Weird.
DH Finally gets Home this evening. He’s been gone since Saturday. So that will be nice. And I have girls night out tomorrow. He made it home just in time. 😉

Glad everything worked out, thatgolfb! So happy the kiddos are feeling better, cdnfarmgirl! N had an OK follow-up - the ear that had the worst of it cleared, but there's clear fluid in his other ear. It's not inflamed, but she thinks something is coming, because apparently his nose was running during the appointment. We are to go back in 4 weeks, sooner if he starts showing other symptoms (fever, tugging, etc). It may also be the start of the tube conversation. Joy.

We are in the thick of tantrums too. We seem to have hit terrible twos early. DD1 started about this age too. And speaking of DD1, girlfriend has discovered her ability to cop an attitude all the sudden and I'm not feeling it. Thankfully she's such a people pleaser that I call her on it a couple of times and she stops, but dang girl.

We’re desling with tantrums here too. Anytime she doesn’t get what she wants she throws herself on the floor and screams. Girlfriend has a temper.
She didn’t nap this monrning because she pooped right after I put her down and then refused to sleep. She ended up staying up until after lunch and then went right to sleep when I put her down, so we’ll see how long she sleeps for. I wanted to run to the store and go for a walk, but now it’s going to depend on how long this nap is.

I found two new teeth poking through this morning. C’s left upper and lower canines. They’re so cute! Now he’s only got 2 more to go until he gets his 2 year molars.
He throws tantrums too. Sometimes I can’t help but laugh because he’s being so ridiculous

And now my oldest is puking apparently. I went out with some friends. Came back and apparently he’s puked once. I’m 🤞🏻🤞🏻 It’s because he ate too much candy at the in-laws this evening (but I know deep down it’s probably not)
