The convo in randoms made me think we should start a solid food thread!

DD is just not getting the food thing. She doesn't seem to care much about it all and is much more interested in trying to play with the spoon. She also still doesn't seem to be getting the hang of keeping the food in her mouth and getting it towards the back to swallow. She mostly still pushes everything back out. It's been a couple weeks and she's on I think her sixth food. She's definitely swallowing some, but it takes like 30 minutes or more to maaaybe get her to eat a teaspoon of puree. I don't remember it being like this with DS 🤔

I thought DD would have an issue with solids since she doesn't seem to like the feeling of bottles/pacifiers/etc in her mouth but from 4.5 months on she has loved and chowed down on pretty much everything. Dd1 was very picky and was a lot harder to feed. I want to venture into BLW like we did with dd1 and hopefully be done with spoon feeding in the next few months.

We have been feeding P the teething biscuits and some purée. She LOVES all food. It has actually helped her focus more when she eats her bottle. She is constantly eyeing our food. Girl likes to eat.

I'm interested and excited to start trying foods soon. And we will be trying a BLW mix now that he can sit unassisted. I've got one of those indestructible books about food for the easter basket as well as some snacks and a water cup. He's not AS interested in what we are eating as his big sister was and he also has a horrible gagging thing he does normally so we will see!! I'll probably start trying some stuff out after his 6 month check up on the 26th.
Oh and I had this convo with my friends but was wondering your thoughts and experiences. With my DD I was instructed to do cereal at first since she was EBF and needed something fortified with iron. I tried it and and she wasn't a fan so we really only gave it a few times. I wasn't planning to try cereal with this guy but was wondering if it's still common and if you guys used/use it?

pixiepink24 I didn't do the baby cereals at all with DS. I just made my own oatmeal and rice and ran them through the food processor to get an appropriate consistency. But my pedi also recommended the cereals for the iron. Between his recommendation and the fact that it's just easy, I've been using the cereal for DD. So far just the oatmeal.

We're doing Baby Led Weaning, might be worth it for you to try it out tbirdlove if she's not taking to purees. We tried purees with my DD and she just gagged and spit them out but would go to town on a chunk of avocado or bread crust or whatever. You do have to get over your fear of them gagging because they will do that normally while learning to eat (it's different than choking). You can also give a vitamin with iron instead of cereal. We won't be doing cereal (I didn't with DD either) and will just give the vitamin since my DD needed it at 9 months. We just started a few days ago, but so far C's tried cooked carrot, asparagus, and scrambled egg. He really liked the scrambled eggs last night and kept picking up more bits to stick in his mouth. Not sure how much he actually ate, but it's all for learning and practice at the moment anyway.

Dramaphile I just gave her a big hunk of pear today to try that! She seemed to enjoy working on picking it up and getting it to her mouth and mouthing on it, but if she got some off she just pushed it out. I still smooshed some up too.

I was originally planning to do BLW but ended up starting with the purees. He does fine with them and seems to enjoy them although we gave him a teething biscuit last night and he enjoyed eating it so much he legit got pissed off when it was gone.
I try to give him bits of our food when it's something he can try without any extra work on our side but with the allergy concerns I've been so reluctant to give him anything. I know it's just something I need to get over, but it's all still new so it makes me nervous. The plain/combo jars of fruit and veggie purees are all ok for him so they're just so much easier to go with.
