To be fair, I do wish Rep. Omar originally chose another word other than the 'something' in 'some people did something'. That it seemed a bit flippant and minimizing the attack seems understandable to me, especially in this day of reducing quotes to fit twitter limits. But the President, among other reacting who didn't read the entire quote, was absolutely wrong in his response, IMO. Regardless of the words she chose, he’s the president of the United States. Those actions are far far beneath that office. They should never have had a thought it was acceptable behavior. He wanted to be president he should act like it at some point. Even W did not use fear mongering of Islam. He made a point to call for unity and even managed to sound like a president doing it.

Eh, I did say the President was absolutely wrong in his response. However, I do think Rep. Omar might have chosen her words more carefully. Both can be true.

I do understand the criticism of her words when taken out of context, but I fully understand her point of view. Given her audience and her experience as a Muslim woman, I think her message was not offensive. I know 9/11 is a very sensitive topic. But if we are truly going to have a government of diverse leaders, we have to allow for different viewpoints. For a Muslim person living in America, there’s 9/11 the event/the tragedy and then there’s 9/11 the aftermath and the Islamophobia that immediately resulted and has sustained (if not gotten worse) for over a decade since. She was speaking to that.
I understand the speaking in sound bites thing. But it’s not something I’m going to critique too much. Are you giving a genuine speech to connect with an important audience or are you speaking in sound bites? I prefer the former.
Maybe I’m naive but I truly don’t believe Rep Omar would seek to minimize 9/11. I just don’t. And I know I preach intentions don’t mean shit if you make other people feel badly, so I do allow for that. She made other people feel she was minimizing and she needs to deal with that. But I don’t feel like the policing of her words is necessary in this case. (For me, my opinion). I did feel she crossed the line earlier in the year with using anti-Semitic tropes about monetary influence and dual-loyalty.
I think some of this is the growing pains of making some small progress on diversifying our leaders. Of course, combine it with Fox News and that absolute monster in the WH and we’ve got a serious issue. There is, in my opinion, absolutely a coordinated attack on this woman because of her religion and skin color. It is being lead by T, supported by the media (beyond just Fox News), and at best ignored by the GOP (although I think encouraged is more likely). It is dangerous and wrong.

I am glad Dem leadership finally said something. I was getting upset at their silence.
