My mom always had huge gardens. I hated it at the time, but wish I had the time and space to devote to it. If I had time and space, I'd grow: asparagus leaf lettuce spinach green beans tomatoes carrots potatoes
Snapping green beans was my most hated summer chore. But yum to those canned green beans.

Sunny41 strawberries are fun, and don’t take to long. I beg to differ. I have managed to kill strawberries a good 3-4 years in a row.

Lettuce is super easy but it’s a cool weather crop so you’d need to do that in spring and fall. Anything that vines is super easy: zucchini, cucumbers, squash. The main thing with growing food is to keep the water consistent. If you could get a soaker hose with a timer that is best.
For more garden info, here are a couple YouTube channels I recommend: migardener, the rusted garden, and roots and refuge Eta: also calikim

Also, make sure wherever you’re growing food has full, all day sun. The south side of the house would be best.

This year I’m planning to grow tomatoes, potatoes, garlic, basil, oregano, rosemary, lettuce, spinach, arugula, snap peas, and green beans. Already established are asparagus, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries.
Mostly I am into ornamental gardening but I’m branching out a little bit to food. I just don’t want to give it tons of space. I’m very excited for my 6 new rose bushes I ordered and the seeds I already started to grow and give me lots of pretty cut flowers.

I hope to get our small yard all set up how I want it this year and that will include a spot for strawberries. Garden fresh strawberries are so good. I'm laughing at you killing some klong11 because I'm a black thumb and they literally grew like weeds for me at my old house. 😄 Mostly I want to get some color in my yard and must have a hydrangea.

I really want to try, but I have such little luck bc I stink at the maintenance. I either do too much or too little. Maybe I’ll try this year. Do the strawberries start from seeds or plants?

Just get the plants, it’s easier. I actually have mine in a planter that sits on top of my deck railing. Easy to water and pick them.

I am hoping to start small with maybe some pots with tomatoes. I don't know how the sun will hit so that way I could move around if needed. We also have an insane deer situation, so not sure much would survive them. I have heard they have jumped 6 foot fences to get into backyards around here...

We did tomatoes one year. I don't like tomatoes but MH loves them. And because I know nothing about planting things, and nothing about tomatoes, I had bought too many plants. But since we had them we planted them all and said we would just give a bunch away to family and friends. MH was sooooo looking forward to fresh tomatoes. He took such good care of the plants and they were just about perfect for picking....he said he was going to pick them the next day. The next morning they were ALL gone! Every single last one of them. We figured an animal of some sort got them, but didn't know what. That evening I had a friend over and she was looking out the window when she said "what does that squirrel have?" It was a beautiful, perfect tomato! The squirrels took them all! We have not attempted to plant anything since. Lol.

It's so bad. I've even gotten plants that already have berries starting and bam, dead. We did better last year. Remembered to water them, they got sufficient sunlight, Cadence got 1 or 2 berries out of them and then, dead. No idea.
I've had luck with green peas, they grow anywhere there, then the bugs come with their weird webs and claim them all. We did good with carrots and potatoes, but literally planted them and then forgot about them and suddenly we had veg....the mh and daughter then refused to eat.
I had some flowers one year. Sweet Williams, I believe they were called. Mh thought they were weeds and took the weed eater to them. I was pissed.

lfig, we had a topsy turvy(that hanging basket thing where the tomatoes come out the bottom) with a cherry tomato plant in it. The squirrels LOVED them.

I think I need to build some sort of enclosure around my little garden. Just to keep the stupid webby* bugs out.
* I don't know what kinds of bugs they are, I just know they wrap my plants in webs

Look what I got at Menards! A primrose and pansies! First plants I’ve seen out anywhere. I’m so stoked! They will be so pretty all spring and then I can plant the primrose in the ground because it’s perennial here.

It’s probably spider mites. Get some neem oil spray or insecticidal soap, both available at Lowe’s/HD. You could also plant something that attracts the predators of them, like dill or parsley. If you wanted flowers you could do calendula or bachelor buttons.

We have the same issue. MH sprays them with something but it doesn’t really help.

I don’t know how to garden but strawberries are one of like 3 foods DD eats. I spend at least $10-$15 a week buying them. Tell me more.

Depends on your zone. I got my plant I think in May last year at Lowe’s. I would recommend getting a couple different kinds of strawberries. One June bearing and one ever bearing, at least.

Love this thread! I could definitely use some tips and tricks I have a 4×4 raises bed that I've attempted to grow veggies in the past 3 years. I've had luck with tomatoes, zucchini, cucumber, kale, and onions. My problem is I am winging it and tend to overcrowd. Fox example, I had no idea cucumbers were on vines and they overtook everything. Last year, my tomatoes grew much larger than I thought and I ended up sacrficing the zucchini. Also have no clue on flowers, I have a trellis in partial shade, I want something viney and flowery to grow up it! I would recommend looking up square foot gardening. It helps with spacing. Always look at the tag/seed packet and go by the largest size the item gets. There are 2 different kinds of tomatoes: determinate will stay on the smaller size (good for containers) and indeterminate can get huge. You can grow zucchini and cucumbers on trellises. a girl I follow on YouTube, roots and refuge, has a tutorial on how to make one out of a cattle panel. For your part shade trellis I’d recommend honeysuckle. There are a few different varieties, but most of them smell really nice.

LOL *hangs head in shame* I think I thought you could do ome plant in each square. Eta: honeysuckle is a great idea! I personally haven’t done square foot gardening so I’m not entirely certain how it’s done, but I think some plants must use more than one square.
