This area is to the right when you come up the stairs. It’s grey (it’s photographing white), very light, but the same color as all of the other rooms in the house. It overlooks the living room which is mostly accented in shades of blue. It’s used as storage for art supplies (the turquoise jewelry box), cookbooks and stationary (the sideboard) and some of the kids’ books. It’s bigger than it looks in the photograph, but I think it’s because the angles are really odd up there.
All of the furniture is unfinished wood so very easily painted like I did with that turquoise jewelry box that used to be in a storage closet in the basement of our old house housing art supplies.
I’d like a more rustic/antique look to the paint this time so I know that I’ll have to use chalkboard paint and wax to probably get the finish I’m looking for, but I don’t know what color to paint the pieces.
1. Do I stay with something fun for a pop of color, something in the blue family (maybe navy), or do I go for a more neutral gray or cream to brighten the space?
2. Do I paint all of the pieces the same color?
3. What about placement? Do I move the bookshelf to the long wall currently opposite the sideboard and move the jewelry box to the opposite corner leaving the sideboard where it is?
4. I’ll change the hardware too, depending on what color I choose.
I would like to get rid of the recliner, but MH loves to sit in it at night to relax before he comes in to bed. And he really loves to sit there with both kids and read, and they do look so cozy that I don’t want to take it away from him.
So I think I will get a throw for it, and I was thinking a round area rug would work in the space. Thoughts on that?
And finally, what do I put on top of these things, do I go decorative or functional?
Once I figure out the furniture, I’d like to hang a big piece of canvas art that I’d have to purchase on the wall opposite the windows. I’ll have to watch for sales!
The flashlight-like light fixture will also go, but we’d like to learn how to do that ourselves before we end up spending thousands of dollars on an electrician to replace the bad taste of the previous owners!!
Thank you!!
