I can’t pretend I’m innocent in the game. When my grandfather died my mom and I were the only two who showed up to help my grandmother clean out her mansion. She offered us our pick of a lot of antiques etc. I was only 20 so I didn’t have want for a lot of it but I took this huge painting I’d always liked. I hung it up in my college apartment and some party pics posted to FB showed it. My cousins, aunts, uncles, everyone collectively lost their minds in the comments section - why do you have that, who gave you that, I claimed that years before you were born, you’re too young to care for something that means so much to this family! Grandmother made a FB account just to shame them all publicly I was the only grandchild to show up and help, I was given it in thanks and they can all think on that.
I deleted FB many years ago now due to more family drama of the sort, but a lot of my cousins follow my IG and I enjoy whenever the painting is shown in a photo of our home. I know it just eats them and they show their parents for sure.

No joke like 20 years over cheap salt and pepper shakers. No sentimental value. I mean, they will be all dramatic and tell you there’s sentimental value, but they’re lying. It’s really just, “how dare you cheat me?” No one actually wants the shakers. Fact. The costume jewellery drama is this: Matriarch dies, leaves 6 grown children, 3 sons and 3 daughters. The daughters have divvied up the real jewellery amongst themselves years ago and that basically gets split up without too much drama before mom is in the ground. One of the brothers takes a piece of costume jewellery to give to his wife, who had done the day in and out care of this woman, just as a memento. The sisters collectively lose their MINDS and threaten the dead to me card over not having been asked first if each one of them wanted that specific piece to remember mom by. Because it was VERY sentimental. (It was not.) The wife who received the piece is stuck between her husband digging in and saying he had every right to it and so do his daughters via his wife and wanting to appease her SILs over a piece of costume jewellery she does not even want at this point. Same exact shit as the shakers. Now another brother decides to join in and say actually I think mom would have wanted some of her real jewellery to go to our wives. Everything bursts into flames. See in a family like this, I would spell every. little. thing. out in a will.

Also, is that an Italian thing that we show up when you die ready to take all your tchotchkes? Or is that just the average petty family? I thought this was every body. But I’m not at all Italian and I also do the dead to me thing so maybe I need an ancestry test.

So my aunt told her she could have my grandma's wedding ring when she was "older." Well, my sister is 29 and no ring... My aunt got to keep it in the first place because she bought the main diamond when my grandma wanted an upgrade.

MH's family has the dead to me thing down pretty good. Also the "family is more important than anything else in the world and stick by them no matter what." Which does not compute to me. Not Italian though.
Oh, they also do the fighting over jewelry thing! When MH's dad passed away, all his sisters came to MIL's house and basically robbed her of all the family heirloom jewelry her husband had given to her.

Omg. Italians and their grudges! My husband’s father and uncle are Italian and I made an offhand comment about a garbage strike in Naples and said something like “it sure is smelly today” and the uncle has not spoken to me since. That was like 6 years ago. I’m cackling. My whole family would be gossiping what a bitch you were. To this day the uncle and his wife refer to me as “that terrible American girl”.

I just got nostalgic reading that. It was like being at my great-grandmother’s Christmas party, which is no longer held because everyone hates each other.

Well, my grandma has labeled all her little thingies for fear of a fight when she dies, but I think literally no one will be fighting over her Hummels or whatever. She's polish. When my grandpa died on my mom's side there was some fighting, but he had some cool shit. That side is German/Scottish. Let me know when she goes. My family will show up and fight over anything.

As I have said for at least two years, this reality star/celebrity is setting the market for a virginity video when her daughter turns 18. She is counting on it for her own retirement and doesn't care if her daughter walks away with any of it.

I married into an Italian family who has taken the “blood is thicker than water” thing so far as to tell my H he needs to be more loyal to them and put his parents and siblings before me and our kids. As a result, we have barely any relationship with them but the whole thing started going downhill because my SIL hated the bridesmaid dress and my FIL got mad that we didn’t follow the guest list he sent us. From nearly 10 years ago. They’ve got the grudge holding down. Every once in a while they call my H up and scream at him that he “needs to come home” and about how important family is and how it always comes first and they can’t seem to figure out why it’s such an ineffective tactic. 🤣

I actually hate that saying and we don’t use it in my family, we say “Family is Family and Family comes first.” But by that we mean if we consider you Family, you are ours. We don’t care if you’re blood related. My iPhone even knows how serious it is and always capitalizes the word Family.

Jusse Smollett officially a suspect in a class 4 felony, filing a false police report. Woof Such a mess, and so stupid if it turns out to be a hoax. And, turns out back in 2007 in California for a DUI stop, Jusse gave his brother's name to the cops. He pleaded no contest to that charge. And the Cook County State's Attorney recused herself due to familiarity with potential suspects and supposedly after facilitating conversations between the Smollett family and the CPD at the beginning of the investigation. Another mess IMO. And, in the IMO can't win for losing, some Chicago activists are thinking of filing a lawsuit against the CPD for its use of resources in investigations (I think they're upset about the amount of detectives assigned the high profile intersectional Smollett case as opposed to in the news cases). I get it - in the Chicago area I think we're all furious about the amount of resources lost if the Smollett case is a hoax, but what can they do? Don't assign detectives - screeching from the public. Do assign resources - screeching from the public. I think their anger may be misplaced, honestly, if Smollett is guilty.

My H's grandmother has iced out my BIL (H's sister's husband) because she thinks he took a shitty old level when they were HELPING her clean and get rid of a bunch of stuff even though (1) he denies it and (2) it's a shitty old level that she wanted to get rid of anyways. One of these bad boys, only ancient

My grandmother has spent the past few years making sure everyone knows what they are getting. Her house is split between her sons, each grandkid gets a certain amount of money, the engraved Christ head above her head goes to my uncle and so on. She has already started squirreling her jewelry off to me.

angelashly, I'm glad they assigned resources as well - had the crime been real, it deserved to be investigated to the max. And, if it's a hoax, also deserves to be investigated to the max. But I can well imagine how angry/confused real victims of real crimes that don't have a dozen people spending 24 hours a day looking into those crimes are. I just think they're directing their anger in the wrong direction at this point.
