So kajillionaires running private equity firms buy up struggling companies, sell off anything of value, then declare bankruptcy. All without paying the pensions promised to employees. Then the federal government steps in and pays the employees some fraction of their expected pension, on the taxpayer dime. This is truly the fleecing of America. Good thing to keep in mind as the pundit class prepares to herald Mitt Romney as the Savior of Democracy. As a grocery chain is dismantled, investors recover their money. Worker pensions are short millions. wapo.st/2ESWLqZI can talk about this all day long. They make sure there is money for executive comp and cry poor to the bankruptcy courts when it comes time to fund pensions and other benefits for the rank and file. This article mentions the Central States pension plan, which covers 400k Teamsters. The pension is expected to be insolvent within 6 years and it's insolvency will collapse the multiemployer pension insurance provided by the PBGC. Which in turn will harm thousands of other pensioners. These folks are elderly and their bodies are wrecked by physically demanding jobs they held in their youths. They cannot return to work. We will all have to pay to fix this mess. Meanwhile the private equity dudes are banking millions. RAGE

Also, breaking news: federal employees are definitively not getting a cost of living raise this year.

Also, breaking news: federal employees are definitively not getting a cost of living raise this year. I was a little confused about the term “pay freeze”. Does this just cover the annual across the board bump or is it any increase at all- like our annual steps or the four people I have that had promotions in cue for January? I’m not sure if anyone even can answer this. It’s all such a hot mess.

It's been a total cluster for so long and impacts so many retirees. I'm super interested to see the status report Central States will release in March because it will incorporate the 2018 investment return. ETA: I guess though it will just say "we're fucked" on a piece of paper, which is not really new news.

From past pay freezes, it means no annual percentage increase/locality pay increase but you can still get promotions or step increases. His reason for it is that the government can’t afford it. Which really irks me since, I don’t know, they just have a whole lot of tax breaks to the rich and in turn increased our national debt.

Yes, thank you, it is not quite as direct as my post probably intimated. I wasn't trying to be misleading, just concise

You know it is such a disconnect for Orrin fucking Hatch to stand on the senate floor and talk about how the senate is broken and how unfortunate it is they can’t work together anymore.
Like you weren’t part of the fucking problem.

Not to in any way pain Olympics the Feds who have been furloughed but the people who clean federal buildings, the maintenance crews, the kitchen staff, the servers at the lunch places surrounding the buildings, the B&B owners near national parks... They're effectively furloughed too. And they will not be getting back.oay under any circumstances. So the Freedom Caucus can sit on the pointiest toe of ladybrienne's pointiest boot.

CNN interviewed a woman who cleans the dept of ag building. She has no sick or vacation time and won’t be getting back pay. I’m sure her story is one of thousands.

As someone who is banking on having a pension when I retire, this makes me super angry for these people. I can't imagine.

For the VA locals - stronger gun law bill to be introduced in 2019: Far from local to VA but still very happy to see this. I wish more states had laws like this. I saw OH legislature was able to override Kasich’s veto on their gun control bill. I’m not 100% on the content, just heard it was stricter than their current laws.

Our building is still being cleaned but with a more limited staff. I am assuming they aren’t being paid right now and are working harder to cover the ones furloughed. I hope they get some sort of back pay. We did a nice collection for the woman who cleans out office at the holidays but it’s hardly a drop in the bucket. I feel so bad for so many people.

I wonder if this is the Bedminster club that the two former employees are suing. One is now a legal permanent resident but at the time she was hired she wasn’t and the other still is not; they said the GM (I think?) was fully aware and fixed things on paper for their employment. I really remember the article because one of the women was Puerto Rican and took care directly of Trump, washing and ironing his laundry. He told her he liked to hire Puerto Ricans because he liked their work ethic.

I think it is actually less strict which is why he vetoed it and they over ruled him anyway. It had stand your ground nonsense which they did at least remove that. And moving burden from victim to prosecutors on self defense shootings which I don't know enough about if that is good or bad. But it also prevents individual cities from implementing stronger gun laws than the state law which is pretty lax.

I know I was mad about the veto override so what you’re saying makes far more sense than mine.
