Apologies in advance, I'm sure this will be long
I had been dealing with high blood pressure issues for the past couple weeks - they were trying to manage them with different BP meds, but nothing was really working and I was feeling pretty cruddy overall from the meds and high BP. On Saturday night I started having a pretty bad headache, and checked my BP which was super high. We called my parents to come to the house since DD was already asleep and headed to L& D to be checked out. They admitted me within an hour for my elevated BP with plans to induce and randomly my contractions started coming regularly as soon as I got to triage. I was 2cm dilated.
They got us to the room and started magnesium and cytotec around midnight. When they checked me at 3am I was only dilated to 3cm, so they placed more cytotec and I tried to sleep a bit before they started pitocin. Based on my last labor with DD, I opted for an early epidural to see if it would take and to help my body relax and progress (per OB recommendation) so they placed it around 4am. It worked beautifully (hallelujah!!) but it tanked my BP and I got really sick for a while.
They started pitocin around 7am and my body really struggled to progress. I labored with the peanut ball for most of the day. By 1pm I was still only dilated to 4cm, so they stopped the magnesium since it was fighting the pitocin to get labor going. They had me get into hands and knees position and trendelenberg (head lower than legs in bed) to see if we could help anything along and to help rotate M since he was sunny side up. They also amped up the pitocin to get super aggressive. Around 630pm my epidural was starting to wear off just when I was transitioning. I got a top off to help with the pain, but M was also starting to have heart decelerations with each contraction. They put me on hands and knees again and attempted to place an amnioinfusion to cushion the baby, but the contractions were too strong for the infusion to go in - they actually lost the connection with the internal contraction monitor at one point.
At around 8pm, the nurses said I was then at a 9.5cm and wanted me to attempt to push since M's heart decelerations were getting worse with each contraction. The OB came in and I tried pushing 2-3 times, but they started to get really worried about M at this point. The told me we needed to get him out in a hurry and rushed me to the OR for a C-section. I was freaking out since we really hadn't discussed this possibility until about 5 minutes before, but I asked if M was stable enough for me to awake for the delivery. They upped my epidural as they prepped the OR but I could still feel when they touched my belly and we couldn't wait any longer. They put me under general anesthesia and M was born at 828pm - he was perfectly healthy and got to go to the room with my H right away with no NICU stay. I woke up within an hour and got to have skin to skin and snuggle time.
Overall, compared to my last birth experience I was much more calm and felt better about everything right until the last hour and a half or so. Of course I wish I could have been awake for the delivery, but I'm just so happy to have a healthy baby come home with us!
