One week, one day until midterms!
This is a heavy way to start the week but this was such a powerful article.

I'm just pouring all of my nervous energy into action. phone banking, canvasing, texting. Otherwise I'll go crazy. It's also Peak Week, the final week of 80 Day Obsession so I'm also squat jumping my stress lol.

Is this where I say I am very, very worried about where the entire world seems to be heading? same. The coverage out of Brazil this morning feels a lot like November 10, 2016.

Hey guys..can you do me a favor? The refugee support group I am in was able to ship 56,000 pounds of rice to Turkey/Syrian border. We received word today that it has arrived. Can you send some good thoughts and/or prayers for our volunteers on the ground? They need safety to get it to those in need. Thank you!

Eh, this doesn't concern me too much. It's the right move for her party. She has been chancellor for so long now and has been quite effective at deflecting or otherwise suppressing anyone who might have been a threat to her at the helm of the party. I've been wondering for a while how in the world they would transition to someone else if she announced shortly before the next election that she wasn't running. It's good that she has announced this now so that there is time to figure out who is going to lead the party into the next election.
I don't see it as a negative sign for Germany or the world. I mean, there *are* negative signs in Germany and the world, but this isn't one of them IMO.
Disclaimer: I just got back from the US this morning and am operating on 2 hours of sleep in the last 36 hours. I may re-think this stance once my brain kicks in again

I may re-think this stance once my brain kicks in again I think it is a signal that the right wing parties in Germany are taking a strong hold and it is now beyond her control, and given the greater context that the world seems to be continually shifting this direction with every election, I think it is very concerning.

byjove, but her party (if you want to count the CSU as part of the CDU for this) just got the most votes in 2 state-level elections, so it's not like she's hanging her head in defeat and getting out of the picture. It was actually up in the air whether she would run for the last elections, but she did, and I think it was fairly clear to everyone that this would be her last term. As I said above, by officially announcing it now, there will be time for the party to unite behind their next candidate so they're not a chaotic mess in the run-up to the next election. The fact that the right-wing parties in Germany are getting bigger and getting so many votes is scary, but I see this move on Merkel's part as not connected (directly) to that.

There has been a lot of gun violence in the past week, even for modern day America. So I'll just drop this here in case anyone is looking for a way to get involved. momsdemandaction.org/

crimsonandclover, I think that is overall a good sign, but the NPR article posted above painted it in a much more negative tone, and tbh so does the WaPo story on the events, and much more like she is losing control of the situation and not just gracefully stepping aside.

I was not happy I couldnt go.
Hopefully I can get to the next one.

Barbara Comstock is going to be on the Kojo Nnamdi Show (a local news, politics and culture show on our NPR station) today taking questions from phone/twitter. I think we need to flood the phone lines.

maaaaaannnn WTAF is wrong with KellyAnne Conway She sold her soul. I mean, assuming she had one at one point. ETA: This line makes sense (for them). They can't decry Antisemitism because so many of their base are Antisemites. So dress it up as anti-religion in general and they can all pretend they're defending everything.

German press (even the more left-leaning) are reporting that she had made the decision during the summer recess, and she announced it a week earlier than originally planned because the CDU lost ground in the state elections in Hesse (although again - they're still the strongest party there). ::shruggy guy:: I guess I'm more relieved than anything. I was afraid she would try for another term and get trounced.

To me the biggest thing with Merkel stepping down isn't so much that u think it's a sign of bad things to come, just more that she is really a stabilizing force in the EU and world right now. I'm not a huge fan of her overall, but she is reasonable and has been a continuous source of sense in these uncertain times. I know a lot can happen between now and 2021, I'd just prefer one of the more rational politicians on the world platform stick around for now.
