DD has a fever. Normally, I wait 3 days, but I know strep is going around, and her throat hurts. No other symptoms. Also, this is her first time being sick for real school. I think I’m just going to wait until Monday like I normally would, but I’m second guessing myself because, well, I’m me.

Hopefully it’s not strep! DD is really susceptible to strep (she’s had it like 6 times in the last year alone!). The last two times, we took her too early and the strep results came back negative, then had to make a second trip to get retested. So...unhelpful post, party of one over here. Sorry!

If her throat hurts and you know strep is going around I would just bring her in.
Strep is the worst pain in the world and if they have to wait for test results she may have to be in pain longer.

Normally I don’t go in for a fever by itself, but I definitely would if I suspected strep. Better to get started on antibiotics for that sooner than later.

My only hesitation is that it’s Saturday. If she’s worse tomorrow then it’s urgent care or wait until Monday. Worst.
I’d go in for a strep test just because of the day of the week with her symptoms. Normally, I don’t run to the pediatrician but strep sucks.

I would go in today due to strep going around. If it’s strep, she can start the abx and probably be back to school Monday.

I would probably give it another 24 hours at least & keep her in the Tylenol/Ibuprofen rotation & see how she does before I'd take her in

I would go ahead and go in for the strep test. Knowing it’s going around, along her complaint, and having a fever. Strep sucks. I would want to know and get things rolling if it comes back positive. I might be extra with it though because I probably should have had my tonsils out and everything with my tonsils/glands/throat becomes horrible so quickly, especially strep. I’m sorry she’s not feeling well.

I’d go to urgent care today. Dd1 had a sore throat about two weeks ago I took her to dr after about three days (no fever just sore throat), no strep just virus. Earlier this week I got a sore throat went to urgent care next day just to get note for work and turned out I have strep. I didn’t have much of a fever at first but I ended up getting really sick and still barely better. No other symptoms. I hope she feels better soon!

If your pedi is open, I'd probably go in to be safe. I don't normally take my kids in for a fever unless it's really high or they have other symptoms. But if you know something is going around, I'd take her in.

Will she let you look back her throat and see how it looks? I ordered at an home test kit for strep. It doesn’t help now but something to think about for the future. I tested myself a few weeks ago when I felt like hell and it was pretty easy to do.
I typically try to wait it out unless there are other symptoms. Can you call the nurse’s line?

Thanks for all the input. Now she says her throat doesn’t hurt.
So.
I think I’m going to wait it out. I tried to get a look at her throat, but it was unsuccessful even with her trying to let me.

DS gets strep a lot. He’s even had it twice since his tonsils were removed last summer. He complained of a sore throat last Sunday and I brought him right in. Swab was negative but the culture came back positive. Since he had the symptoms they started antibiotics while waiting for the culture.
I would bring her in tomorrow for sure if she’s not feeling well still.

I'd take her today bc if it's strep they need 24 hours of antibiotics before returning to school.

I don't bring in for fever alone. Fever + lethargy, fever + complaints of ear pain, throat pain, mouth pain, etc. and I'm calling the doctor/ heading to urgent care. If it were strep, she'd be complaining. It's not comfortable.

Because we have ear/adenoid issues here, I’d go in for a swab if she keeps complaining about her throat. If it’s just a fever I agree with three days.

rvasc hows your DD today? So, she feels fine. Her temperature is varying from 98.6-99.9. She’s playing and eating and talking and says nothing hurts. I have no idea about school tomorrow. 99.9 isn’t technically a fever, right? I lean toward sending her?

This sounds almost word for word what my DD had the other day. Slight fever between 98 and 99. Complained of a sore throat for 2 days. I brought her to the doctor and she tested negative for strep. Fever and sore throat went away and never came back. She's been fine since. *Shrugs*
ETA: I did send her to school the next day.

Yes! Fingers crossed the late afternoon fever does not tear its ugly head. My DS had a really similar thing a couple weeks ago. Like fever of 101, super tired and grouchy and said his throat hurts, so I gave him Tylenol and he fell asleep for the night at 6:30 then woke up 12.5 hours later feeling fine, no fever. He went to school the next day and has had no symptoms since. Weirdest virus ever. Hope your DD had something similarly short lived!

So what is technically a fever? It’s now 100.1. It’s 100.4, right?

So what is technically a fever? It’s now 100.1. It’s 100.4, right? I think it’s school district dependent. Ours 100.0 and we have to be below that for 24 hours to return.

So what is technically a fever? It’s now 100.1. It’s 100.4, right? In my nursing classes we designated fevers like this: Axillary- 99° or higher Oral- 100° or higher Rectal or tympanic- 100.4° or higher
