+1 for no banned books. I got books taken away as "punishment" because I didn't care when TV privileges were revoked. They quickly realized that I had books stashed everywhere and that banning reading was just stupid for me.

Nope. I read as many of the Earth's Children series as were available at the time (Clan of the Cave Bear is the first in the series) starting in maybe 6th grade. My mom was very pro-sex talk with her kids, but those books added quite the knowledge of things. I won't censor books. I'll annoyingly talk about them instead. I now know what I will be reading next. This sounds fascinating.

OMG I picked up a copy at a tag sale when I was probably about the same age. Maybe younger because I didn't really *get* a lot of the sex scenes at first. My Mom was cool about it, she was always very open about sex.

My mom never even monitored what I was reading, much less limited it. But she did get a phone call from a friends mom once about a book I let her borrow that was a coming of age romance novel with some sex scenes in it. The other parent was not pleased and my mom pretty much ok'd her and then told me not to loan out my books anymore. I think I was a freshman in high school then. Maybe a sophomore.

When I was in 5th grade my mom started loaning me her V.C. Andrews, Sidney Sheldon, and romance novels to read. So, no, no books were banned in my house. Awesome. LOL, yeah I side-eye some of my mom's parenting decisions now that I'm an adult.

My parents had more rules about who I could lend things to/where it was appropriate to bring books like that. Mostly because my mom didn't give a shit about me reading her romance novels but she would care if a teacher/other mom called her about it.

Nothing banned here either. I went through books at a pretty good clip, I don't think she could have kept up with me if she wanted to.
Also long as my kids are reading, they can read whatever they want.
Danielle Steele was not on my list of books I was reading though. I found/find her to be boring at best.

My mom banned lots of movies and tv shows, but never thought to ban any books. I borrowed Clan of the Cave Bear and the sequels from the library and read them all with relish as a middle-schooler. Some of the later books (especially Valley of the Horses) are basically caveman porn. My mom was never the wiser...

My parents were insanely strict about tv/movies and music and just about everything you can think of except books. I don't remember reading anything particularly raunchy though. Do people use the word raunchy? It's my mom's favorite word for anything she disapproves of.

She never permitted anything that wasn't legal, but she believed in giving us space to be teenagers and definitely didn't micromanage. I had some friends whose parents definitely preferred the latter.

No, I could read what I liked. I read a lot of V. C. Andrews books, which all had a good dose of teenage sex and getting married at 17 (sometimes to your maybe cousin). I doubt my Dad and stepmom knew what they were though. My mom definitely did.

My mom and her church friends got all uppity about the HP books and said we weren't allowed to read them. That made my brother want to read them. He checked the first one out from the library and tried to hide it but he was terrible at hiding things. She found it and took it to read it first and then said it was ok for him to read. I don't know what she thought it was but it was not a devil worship book. I don't think he was as interested once it was no longer forbidden. Meanwhile, 4th grade me read Flowers for Algernon and was totally creeped out by all of the sexual stuff. I clearly remember my teacher asking about what I was reading and the look on his face when I told him. "oh.... and how are you liking that book so far?" My mom never paid attention to what I was reading.

My parents were really strict with my sister on what she could read and watch. However, when they had the rest of the us (3 in 3.5 years) they pretty much seemed to give up on trying to censor anything because there were too many of us to keep track of around the house.

We had a lot of books sorta banned. My mom would go through our library stack and pull out what she didn't like. She hated common modern teenager books like Goosebumps. She really only wanted us to read classics. The one exception was Harry Potter. Everyone but me enjoyed them so she let those through.
I read islands in the stream at a pretty young age and remember being shocked at it. So her filter wasn't very good. Classics =\= good literature

I was obsessed with Toni Morrison as a freshman in high school. My mom had no idea what I was reading and didn't really care. I'm honestly surprised my library had her books.

I think my parents may have filtered some of my choices for violent or scary topics but not sex. my mommalso explained bjs to my friends so ¯\_(ツ)_/ she's pretty #breezy One kid in my English class couldn't read A Brave New World when we were sophomores in HS. Poor kid spent the entire unit in the hall. His mom had put sticky notes on every page with an inappropriate passage and made a scene.

Kin Flicks- Lisa Alther and Flowers in the Attic- VC Andrews were books I read just a little too early- and traumatized myself. but there were no brakes on books in the house. In fact I read the serialized WOrld According to Garp in Playboy.

No censorship of books when I was growing up, but honestly...I had such weird tastes that my parents never had anything to worry about.
No joke - I read no less than 30 Star Wars novels in middle school. I read about 100 of the stupid Goosebumps books. And I loved loved John Grisham. So...basically Star Wars published fan fiction, crappy R.L. Stine, and political thrillers for young taitai. My parents were probably like, whatever floats her boat...

My parents never banned any books that I recall. I read so many different kinds of books, and even reached out to my mom when I wanted to branch out. She loves Stephen King and Anne Rice, so those weren't off the table.
I remember reading Francesca Lia Block and her books dealt with sex and drugs a lot. I don't know if my mom knew about them.

Taitai, I read so many Goosebump books as a kid (I think I read all of them), and also lots of John Grisham (The Pelican Brief movie got me hooked). My parents were just happy I was a reader.

I remember reading Flowers in the Attic because I saw it on some I love the 80's show. My mom was totally oblivious. I read all the time and usually in my room so she didn't pay much attention.

My mom never banned books, because I don't think she even had any clue of what I was reading. I never read the YA stuff when I was that age, because I started reading adult books when I was like 9-10. I'm sure a lot of them went right over my head, but I read all of the Elizabeth Peters, John Grisham, Maeve Binchy off the top of my head.
She would withhold taking me to the library until I pulled weeds in the summer though.

LOL, yeah I side-eye some of my mom's parenting decisions now that I'm an adult. I wasn't being sarcastic. I knew I should have thrown in an exclamation point. I do think it is awesome and I would totally do that if I had a daughter who was game.

There was no censorship of books in my house either. I was allowed to read anything I wanted.
I don't plan to censor books either.

I read Tara Road when I was about 11/12 I think and it made me blush a little at that age, but I did fall in love with Maeve Binchy for a while. My grandma gave me a box set of four of her books and I devoured all of them.

No banned books here. I didn't even know people did this. +1 I never would have thought of that. I read anything I wanted and picked whatever looked interesting at the library. I pretty much watched anything too but my mom was more strict about violence and didn't really care about sex stuff. My dad let me watch anything. I did have some nightmares sometimes.

I'm not sure if my parents didn't care, or just couldn't keep up! DH's mom censored everything! I was reading Julie Garwood (her historical romances) in 6th grade. I jumped from R.L. Stine to Stephen King by 4th grade. I think my mom was just happy I was reading. I rarely got stuff at the scholastic book fairs because my mom babysat for our librarian and she gave me first dibs on most books I wanted to read. She would even bring out the catalogues they ordered from and let me pick books I'd want to read. I will say my parents never took books away! I'd get grounded and come home from school with as many books as my school library would allow, it drove my dad mad when I would just use my time to read more! They wouldn't let me go with them to the bookstore though. grumpycat, my dad tried to get books taken away as punishment but my mom refused. It took a few years for them to realize that not taking me to the bookstore on Saturday was a better punishment than banning tv. I won't ban and definitely won't pre-read (MIL did this) unless I'm interested in the book. I just hope they love reading as much as I do. I think I'll discuss topics with them more than my parents did. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

My Mom gave me Clan of the Cave Bear but was a bit nervous about me buying the next one of the series, but to her credit she let me. Nothing was out of bounds and I relished it. Stephen King, V.C. Andrews, whatever I chose it was ok. I was a voracious reader and whatever I chose it was not out of bounds.
