Thanks, Dramaphile. I will definitely add a nipple shield to our hospital bag, juuuuuuust in case. Because feeding was so traumatizing with DD, I will be 100% ready for anything this time around. Haha. I’ll also talk to the OB later this month to see if I can get a hookup with an LC before he arrives.

Our hospital holds breastfeeding classes that are recommended 4-6 weeks prior to your due date. Just an idea others may want to check into! Idk if they are super pushy about BF no matter the circumstances, though, so I’d be cautious of that.

They did some annoying things ("my favorite part--it helps you lose weight!" What a load of BS, you don't teach a BF class because you're passionate about losing weight, don't patronize us) but they weren't pushy or blamey.

I feel like the BFing and loosing weight is kind of a myth. I may have lost a couple lbs but not much. I had to constantly eat and keep my calories up just to produce enough milk for DS2.

I did not lose weight at all while BF. I'm pretty sure when I weaned I was about the same weight I was at about 2 weeks PP. Some people are magical unicorns and get skinny (good for them) and then there's those of us with peasant genes that decide to save up fat for the winter in case of another potato famine.

I only lost weight while breastfeeding because my son had allergies and I couldn't have dairy or soy. Soy is in everything.

I lost too much weight and was underweight during nursing. I got pregnant right after, and am already like 35-40 pounds up, so...

I plan to BF again this time around. I lasted 1 year with DD, but I'm thinking I might not last that long this time around. I used the nipple shield FOREVER last time because DD's latch was so rough. I remember sobbing out of frustration about 4 weeks in, but gradually she was able to latch without the shield and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. (side note - DD just went to the dentist a couple days ago for the first time and they asked "did you have trouble with her latch? she's got a lip tie that we probably would have fixed if she was still a baby...thanks hospital lactation consultants for nothing!)
I also hate pumping with a passion. When I went back to work with DD I was only going 2 days per week so I could deal with the pumping schedule. But now, I'm going to go back full time right away and I'm not sure how long I'll be able to pump multiple times in a work day.

I only lost weight while breastfeeding because my son had allergies and I couldn't have dairy or soy. Soy is in everything. See that didn’t work for me. I was dairy and egg free for almost the entire time I BFed but I cooked a ton and have figured out so many substitutes for dairy and eggs in recipes that it didn’t affect what I ate that much. There are only a few baked goods that I can’t substitute out eggs in and losing cheese on top of certain dishes just doesn’t bother me much.

It's taught by a LC so I expect some pushiness, but I don't care.
Like, N was BF for a month, then all formula, and he's a growing and thriving and smart AF 3 year old, it's not a be all end all type of thing like it was when I was a FTM and I had all the guilt. I don't carry that weight anymore.

I had a really bad experience with breastfeeding last time, and I'm not sure if I'm even going to try again. Part of me feels like I SHOULD, at least for a month or so to provide baby with antibodies.
I'm also on an SSRI and will not be coming off of it, so idk if that's bad for breastfeeding. My guess is probably not since I was approved to stay on it while pregnant.
The cost of formula sucks, but idk. Breastfeeding was a truly horrible experience for me and idk if I can do it again.
I'm thinking maybe just see how it goes, and if I feel like I'm getting to a bad place again, pull the plug immediately. Don't suffer in silence.

sapatos most SSRIs are considered safe for breastfeeding. There are I think a few that may affect milk production. Infant Risk Center has a free hotline where you can get info on your particular medication. (806) 352-2519 Obviously you should do what feels right for you, but your medication probably won't prevent you from trying.
