Just out of curiosity, what does kinder entail? Over here it is mainly play based, although most school over also incorporate some basic tasks/worksheets (at school, not homework) when they’re a little older. Most schools, but especially the Waldorf school ds is in, will not start reading/writing/math until first grade.

It’s a lot of activity stations that they can rotate through and then they also have circle time where they will read or do songs. They do group activities for math and shapes and then they work one on one with the teacher on their own things. N has simple books sent home a couple times a week that we’re supposed to read together and he has been learning to read them on his own.

nam2013 ours expects the kids to be able to do basic word reading and writing by end of kindergarten. Since he's currently at a religious school, each week they memorize a small bible passage or part of a prayer or passage. They do a lot of the learning through play.

I do know that in the school Josie will be attending all of kindergarten's "academics" are in the morning, then lunch, recess and specials are in the afternoon. I think it's designed to give them the feeling of half-day with the more fun things in the afternoon. They also take a couple of weeks (it might even be three) and extend the day bit by bit until the kids are used to being there full-time.

I have no idea what kindergarten entails but he is learning to write and do basic math already. I’m not sure about reading.

They already do writing(tracing), they've been doing that since her 3s class. Letter recognition, number recognition, basic addition and subtraction. I work with her on sounding things out and actual writing. Her junior k class is more intense and less play focused. When entering kinder they need to be able to count to 100, have basic math understanding, be able to write at least their name, and read basic words.
It's a lot harder than when we were kids. Entering kinder we didn't need to know anything, that's where the learning began. Not so much nowadays.

My kid is going to so behind compared to your kids, but I’m glad he has a few more years of just playing in the mud in front of him. And full days will be some time, 1st grade; 1 full day, 2nd grade 2; full days, 3rd grade; 3 full days, 4/5/6; 4 full days. This is mainly to do with the school we choose. Usually from 4years up kids go to school 2 half days and 3 full days.

nam2013 Cadence has plenty of play days ahead of her, it just won't be while she's at school necessarily. They still have recess and ways to make learning fun, it just won't be all play. The school she will be at also has an intensive Vietnamese language program. I'm thinking about it, but I'm not sure how beneficial it will be, so I may just put her in their Spanish program. I feel like where we live Spanish will be heard more than Vietnamese.

When I taught k (12 years ago😲) we taught all the letters as sounds and some sight words. We had a lot of centers which were play based. The play basically stopped in 1st though..that's when testing started and when the pressure started for the teachers, and therefore the kids 😔.

nam2013 I'm sure that kids fare far better there than here. Yours definitely won't be behind.

B starts kinder this fall. The city school system has them in half days, it's annoying because I know he's ready for full days, but whatever, what can I do.
I was having minor thoughts about having him start early and therefore be one of the youngest in the class and graduating when he's 17, but this weekend I started chatting to someone who has a November kid who is 16 and will be graduating early and she said that it's actually turned out great for them because she doesn't feel as much pressure to have to go to University right away, she can take a year off and then start secondary when she's a bit older. Have a year to work/travel/think about what she wants to do etc... It was good to hear the end perspective and really calmed my nerves.
