Hi all - creating a thread here since this is a human rights issue and I know none of us are okay with tender age shelters and this ridiculous policy. I'll post resources and ideas to help so we can feel less helpless. I used resistbot yesterday to send a letter to my senators. It was easy doing it through text. You just text resist to 50409 and follow the prompts to create your letter that they will send for you. I used a script from pantsuit nation that was posted on the GD thread. I will be donating to RAICES, too. When I went to do it yesterday, I realized my card was in my work jacket that I left at home. There aren't many events planned, which I found kind of surprising. Only one in all of CA and maybe five countrywide?

I've donated to RAICES and they are able to provide legal coverage for a LOT of families and kids. An angry mom (like us) started a fundraiser for $1500 and it's broken $10m!
One tweet yesterday said they were depositing money into commissary accounts so parents could call their kids.
They did a fb live video yesterday and they seem like genuine down to earth non profit workers, who are now probably overwhelmed but grateful.

Trump seems to be going to sign some executive order that will detain families together, which could face legal challenges.
Curious to hear if/when/how they will reunite separated families.

There’s an amnesty international petition too, they keep sending me to the Dutch version, but it will probably be on the American one too.

It's truly sickening. I think I've mentioned my mom works for a Latino policy organization here in Chicago and the outlook is bleak. It's heartbreaking the programs they are having to develop for kids who may find themselves without parents at anytime. What's equally frightening is the president's interference in Europe. He is appealing the right wing in Hungary and Italy against immigrants and refugees. On a personal note...comments like, what I think it was joelies' co-worker, said about how it doesn't affect white voters have me truly shook. Things like that stick with me, because these are people very similar to my own family being stuck in cages and I don't understand how anyone could be so heartless and lacking in compassion. It is sobering to be constantly reminded how much the victims of Puerto Rico, Mexico and other Latinx lives don't seem to matter. I have to honestly be careful how much I engage because it's too close to home, so I am trying to find the balance between self-care and staying informed. |

I think many people are being forced to re-examine relationships and it is really hard. |

Aside from donating (I gave $$$ to the Florence Project) what are other tangible things we can do? Remember when we all sent carriers to the Syrian refugees? What kind of stuff do these moms need?
I know there is a need for people who can speak the Mayan languages, because that is the native language for some of the mothers and they're having trouble finding translators.
And there is a law firm that has offered to provide pro bono representation to any government employee who refuses to carry out these orders.

cagoldi it would be great if something like that could be done. My moms colleague went to Greece to help out, so we gave her the carriers to bring, she had sooo many to take with her!

So it seems like this EO is just a show and there are a) no plans to make any effort to reunite currently separated families b) intent to detain families indefinitely in camps somewhere.
My moral outrage is exhausted.
I'm glad to see airlines stepping up to say they won't fly kids with ice - so far Delta, American and United have issued statements.

I’m as devastated as you guys about these little kids and babies being separated from their parents. My heart breaks every time i think about it. Thank you tallb for getting the ball rolling here. So much needs to be done, but especially getting out to VOTE in the midterm elections. This insanity has to stop before people become any more desensitized. The stories about the families are killing me. I lived in Central America for two years with so many kind souls who were so welcoming and friendly to me. What our country is doing is wrong and i hope the UN intervenes. |

She doesn't have any inside information. She's just a counselor there for the kids. Her location is only for 12-17 year olds. There are a lot of girls there that did not come in with their families. They were brought in with men claiming to be their father but were actually sex traffickers. She said they're sort of desensitized because of all of the shit they've gone through until now. Some of them are happy to be rid of their captors and some of them are scared their families back home will be killed. It's really horrible. |
