...because I don't know what to think. TW:
Roughly 2 weeks ago the FBI raided my neighbors house and arrested him on child porn charges. Thirteen, to be exact. The children were in video and still photos and most were 2-3 yrs old, which is the age of my youngest. He is facing 200 yrs in prison. As of last week his bail was set at 150k, but today the judge lowered to 25k and as of an hour ago, he is now back home. My neighbors, understandably, are livid. Like, the pitchforks are out. They are making lawn signs saying "protect our kids" or something to that effect. I don't know what to think. What would you do if you were me? What CAN you do? I'm just pissed that this is right under my nose. H doesn't seem phased so maybe I'm making too big of a deal out of things. Thanks for reading my novel.

@darlene I don't have any advice but I'm sickened that the judge lowered his bail to that. He should be in jail right now. That's just horrific.

I wouldn't do anything except be very vigilant about making sure my child/children have no exposure to him.

To add to this, he is married with 3 kids. Right now he is out with them walking the neighborhood like it's nbd.

My kids wouldn’t be playing in the front yard anymore, but other than that I don’t know what you can do. Maybe glare at him when I see him around.

I guess I’m kind of surprised that his bail doesn’t have conditions like limiting contact with minors. Obviously he cannot be on the sex offender registry yet, but something similar. I’m no expert, but I guess I’d assume something like that. I don’t know how you’d find that out though.

I think that the best you can do is not allow your children in the front yard to play, keep all play supervised, and just be aware. Let the justice system do it’s job.

His conditions were no unsupervised contact with minors, no pornography, and not to have access to the internet.

Other than him out walking the neighborhood with his family currently, do you typically have contact with him? Neighborhood playgrounds, etc?

What kind of denial river is the wife floating on? No way in hell would he be back in my home with my children. There’s no “whoopsies” with child porn on your computer, so I’d be filing for divorce ASAP.

That's horrific and disgusting. I would just keep my kids close in sight and no where near that creep. I'm sorry.

Make sure all shades on that side of the house are closed. Closely supervise your kids when they are outside. Do not engage with him or the other neighbors.
I'm sorry you are dealing with this.

Is he on an ankle bracelet or anything? How are they monitoring him being near children? The fact is though, it’s a hands off offense so it’s not unusual for bail to be granted. I work in federal probation and some are released under supervision while awaiting trial. They almost always have gps ankle bracelets to make sure they aren’t fleeing or aren’t in areas like schools, playgrounds, other places kids congregate. They also have to submit schedules so we know where they are going to be at any given time. They often get permission to be around their own kids since they were not “hands on” offenders. I agree with McBenny about the devil you know. Unfortunately there are so so many sex offenders out there we don’t know about. You know about this one and can keep an extra eye out.

His court notes (which are public record) didn't mention monitoring. I appreciate your perspective.

The neighbor across the street from us has been arrested multiple times for child pornography. His parole officer has been around and we often see men in suits over there taking things out of the house. He use to work at the school.
With that said we are moving, for many reasons, but we are looking forward to being away from him. We never let our kids outside by themselves and I’m on them like flies on shit. I want him to know our kids are being watched. We usually try and keep them to the back yard. Our oldest is 4 and she knows the man in the brown house is a bad man and we don’t talk to him.

Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do at this point. I would avoid contact with him and supervise your children when they are outside. I would be very upset if I were you but putting signs up isn’t going to change things. I also feel bad for his kids and wouldn’t want to make things harder on them.

I agree with others and am not surprised about the release and low bail. I am, however, surprised that the children in his home have not been removed from his care. I would not engage the neighbors but I’d be really tempted to make a report to cps just in case they haven’t been alerted for some reason. The way it works here is that the initial report is screened and determined whether there needs to be an investigation, so it couldn’t hurt to report it. If it’s been reported, they’ll see that and probably won’t do anything with a second call. But I work in the child protection arena a lot in my job and over reporting an incident is better than under reporting. Even if it’s “just” porn and not action. But, that is just me and my experience from the court system coloring my view. I can also understand if people are uncomfortable with that idea.

How is he not being held on remand? How does he at the very least not have restrictions of where he can be? Is there any local councillors you can ask to get involved?
Over here we have a risk scale, like, if someone had committed a sexual crime involving boys, he would be watched around girls, but to be nowhere near boys, don't you have something similar at least where you Are?

So we had an ex-friend get charged for making and distributing child pornography. Needless to say we were shook. He's now wearing an ankle bracelet and living with his parents. He is dead to us. Anyway I agree with others. There's not really a whole lot you can do at this point other than avoid him and ensure your children don't have any contact.

Here in the states, you can’t just get random attorneys involved. The only attorneys that are part of the case are the states prosecutor(s) and the defense attorney.
