DS (3) wakes up from long naps (1.5-2.5hrs) inconsolably crying due to pain in his legs and feet. Dr. Google has informed me that it's probably growing pains, which really just means that his little muscles are prone to overuse and slight injury at this age. It definitely happens more on days when he's running around and playing hard in the morning.
We snuggle and I rub his legs and he calms down after a half an hour or so but obviously it's very unpleasant for all involved and I'm looking for any advice you may have to avoid these episodes. Ibuprofen works but the pain seems to go away in the amount of time it takes to kick in anyways.
We change up his shoes a lot but I'm looking at getting him a really good pair of tennis shoes. Please to recommend your favorite brands or styles.

Does he have wide or narrow feet? Mine does well with Stride Rite and Adidas, but complained about Sperry and Nike hurting his feet. He has wide feet FWIW. I know arch can make a big difference as well.

I know arch can make a big difference as well. I'm not sure and we don't have an actual shoe store nearby where I can have him measured. I think he's a little wide but not especially. I have some New Balances in wide in my Amazon cart that I'm thinking of trying. We always have a hard time getting his feet in shoes. It's like his feet are tall or thick maybe? |

My kids have had the best luck with New Balance or Stride Rite. They both had meatball feet.

I'm seeing some reviews that say that too. How annoying. i will attest to this. I have been so disappointed in the last pair of SR sneakers I got for my almost 2yo. The backs are cracked in a few places and they are very stiff even after weeks of use. He trips in them often so I got him a pair of wide New Balance and they are a clear upgrade. I think SR does infant and early walking shoes great (I loved the Soft Motion line), but beyond that, not so much. |

DS has wide feet so selection is limited, but I get his shoes from Zappos. He mostly wears New Balance and occasionally I can find wide Nikes on their site. You can’t beat free shipping and returns.

Team XW feet x 2 kids here. Stride Rite, New balance, and saucony are your best bets for wide/XW. Merrill’s are good for dressier shoes You can purchase a shoe sizer online or just measure the length of his foot (heel to longest toe)and add about 1/2” for growing. For width measure across the ball of his foot. Save yourself the hassle of a wriggly kid and trace his foot while he is bearing full weight and then measure the paper.
I find the best deals on joes new balance dot com, Zappos, and amazon. If you have a New Balance outlet go there before major shopping holidays and they will have BOGO/similar. We usually get 1 pair in the current size and one half size bigger.
For the growing pains, dose him with Motrin before naps and bed. Warm baths will help too. They suck. We are going through them again with the 10YO.

My DD1 who is almost 5 now started with growing pains pretty bad a bit before she turned 3. They can hang around for a few weeks at a time (they ebb and flow a bit). It’s worst when she is tired. Warm baths with epsom salt help or a shower before bed to help her relax, sometimes heating pads, massage, stretching. Pain meds don’t seem to do much to help her. She doesn’t cry, but her legs cramp up really bad and she contorts a bit. We’ve brought her to the ped several times because it took her school a while to get comfortable that not something else was wrong. Ped says it is just growing pains. Warning signs would be if it seems like a joint, is only one leg, or if the leg feels hot to the touch- so just something to keep an eye on. Sounds like it is just growing pains though, I’m sorry 😞 it’s rough. I don’t know how to prevent them.
We’ve had good luck with new balance sneakers. Our go to brand these days is plae.

My almost 6 year old complains of her legs hurting frequently. I rub her legs and she says it helps. We’ve had good luck with new balance and Nike shoes.

We have Plae brand shoes. They have an orthopedist on staff for design. They are thinner soled but very sturdy. They are supposed to mimic a more natural development for the foot. I have a pair of the adult line and they are the best shoes I've ever worn. I have some size 11s from when ds was 11-12 I would be willing to sell you and ship.
Eta the velcro is changeable so you can adjust for wide feet

We use Nike Air Max. My DS gets them. However he has shot up in the last year so I can see him hurting. He complains of bone pain not muscle.

We used to get the Target version of SRs, but like others, we've noticed the quality going down and they're not worth the money anymore. We've switched to Nikes.
DS2 likes cold rather than heat when he gets growing pains. We got a big gel ice pack from Walmart that is almost the size of a heating pad, and it can cover both shins at once. When he wakes up in the middle of the night with pain, it's the only thing that gets him back to sleep.

I may be reading that wrong, but I have a friend who is so fucking weird about giving her child ibuprofen or tylenol for teething or growing pains. Like she thinks it's going to damage the child. |

I'll add another good review for New Balance. I've been buying them for both my kids and they have held up so much better than most others I've tried. I usually get them from Amazon when I can find a good deal.
