What's going on in your garden right now? I noticed that my SO is growing this. My inner 5 year old is laughing at the name.

I know beets are controversial around these parts but I am happy.

We keep having frost warnings at night and I am so sick of putting a blanket over my basil. It looks so sad, I'm not sure it's going to bounce back. It's been the coldest spring in 30 years or something. Lucky us.

I've already pickled my first crops of radishes! I'm up to my eyeballs in spinach, kale, and herbs. I'm frustrated with my lettuces for not growing but the second round of seeds seems to be working. I think I covered the first ones too much.

I love beets, olenka! I'm trying them for the first time this year. Where do you live that you already have a crop of them? My seeds say not to plant them until July. ETA I just looked at my seed packet and it doesn't say to wait until July. I must have hallucinated that so I just planted them where my radishes were (and planted more radishes because yum).

Nice! I know... it's always a cool surprise to see what appears. I had a dill plant pop up this spring and had to laugh because I was never able to get it to grow last year. I’ve got baby tomatoes on a few plants! And we’ve been enjoying the strawberries we can get to before the chickens.
My peas just did not do well this year. Bummer.
Tomorrow I think my cucumbers, pumpkins, and sunflowers are going in the ground.

My container garden is doing amazing! I made a mistake and planted my zucchini with a tomato plant but my grandfather said the zucchini roots are too strong and will strangle it. Not much I can do at this point though. I have my first flowers on the zucchini and peas so I'll be harvesting soon.
I've been eating strawberries right off the plant this week. I cover them with my kids hockey net so the squirrels don't get at them and it seems to be working. Raspberries are coming in and the blackberries are flowering.
Asparagus season is over so I've let the plants go to seed. They are huge and I've got them anchored to the fence. My yard looks like that of an old Italian, with trussings woven to support the plants. Once the peas get taller though it will be hidden.

Also a beet fan here! I just thinned my beets and had a very tasty side of sauteed beet greens with my dinner last night. I've got baby tomatoes, peppers and cukes and lots of snap peas ready to pick and garden peas plumping up. Carrots are looking good, hope to get a harvest in a few weeks, and Kale is growing nicely. MH accidentally mowed over my zucchini plants, so I'm debating waiting to see if they grow back (they still have some small leaves are weren't big to begin with) or just yanking them out and planting new ones (and making a little barrier to protect them from his overzealous mowing). .

My cucumber plants surprised me by sprouting really fast. However, I planted 4 seeds per pot (packet said 4-6 per pot then thin to 2-3), and in each of the 4 pots, only 3 popped up, so it's kind of odd that it happened exactly the same in each pot.
My bell pepper plants seem to be growing rather slowly.
I had a tomato plant that had the top of the main stem eaten, and it just doesn't seem to be bouncing back despite having lots of leaves otherwise to still allow for photosynthesis. We'll see if I ever get anything from it.
Strawberry plant is finally flowering, so I am looking forward to that.

I have some baby tomatoes over here! The cucumbers are doing well too. All the herbs are going wild with the weather we’ve been having.
Something keeps eating the flowers/buds off a couple of potted plants and most of the wildflower mix in one of my raised beds. *grumbles* The morning glories have exploded and filled the trellis well.
I found another grumpy garden frog statue while antiquing last weekend. He’s got some excellent side eye going on 🐸

This is the first week there hasn’t been any rain since I planted stuff. It’s nice but I guess I have to get my act together and water things this weekend.

Apples are getting ripe, they are still small. The other apple tree that made BIG apples died last summer, so I'll have to make do.
Apricots came and went. I only got 10 this year, 30+ last year. hmm...
Grapes should be ripe soon, if birds and ants don't carry them all off.
Still have boatload of grapefruit, but they are starting to dry on the tree. Same for a handful of oranges, the lemons we are down to the last 4 on the tree I'll pick when I need them.
the 12+ tomato plants are hanging in there. A bit stressed over the 100+ degree weather so they'll hang in there thru the summer and go crazy by the end of august.
pepper plants--one a ghost pepper like in the op--are not making any flowers. The serrano from last year, overwintered and transplanted from garden into a large clay pot is still going crazy making serrano peppers all.the.time.
huckleberries going ok, the one in the shade is yellow and sad, but we have a white fly infestation. babies are all over the place, so I need to transplant some and give neighbor who wants them. Some are big enough they taste like blueberries--but my son says they taste like grass to him. oops.
eggplant be making eggs on the plant lol. the ones in the sun end up kinda brown and sunburndt looking instead of the normal eggplant color, with a bit thicker skins, but still eatable. good thing neighbor likes eggplant cause I can only sometimes eat eggplant, not all the time.
herbs think it's just too hot to grow, even in the shade.

I'll stick in some eggplant cubes. I've added it to beef stew and stuck some cubes in chili tonight lol.

I sautee garlic, onion, zucchini, peppers and eggplant in olive oil and add a can (or fresh) of diced tomatoes and some basil. Instead of putting it over pasta, I beat an egg or two with parmesan cheese and beat it into the vegetables. It's so delicous and it was my number one way to use up my farm share. Reminds me of my grandmother too.

We've been picking snap peas, strawberries, lettuce, rhubarb, and cherries. Tomatoes are just starting to blossom, carrots and basil are doing well, peppers are not growing much at all. I just cannot get them to do much, this is my fourth and final year trying.

Moroccan eggplant dip is soooo good. I can't find the recipe I originally used, but basically you cut eggplant into 1 inch cubes (peeling optional), and put it in a heavy pot with some smashed garlic cloves, olive oil and water, then cover and cook it down on medium heat until the eggplant is soft enough to smash with the back of a spoon (add extra water if it gets dry). Then smash the eggplant, add cumin, smoked paprika and salt, and the juice of half of a lemon. Top with chopped fresh parsley and serve it with pita or pita chips. Usually I make it along with a cucumber and tomato salad and sometimes moroccan-style lamb meatballs and eat it all with pita. You can also roast whole eggplant to make baba ganoush.

One of my freaking dogs has been eating my garden! I have no idea why, but she (I think it's my pitbull, Kara) has ripped out several pea vines and chomped on them and also ripped out both of my cucumber plants in the past few days. Ugh. I need to figure out some kind of fencing to keep her out of there. Last year, she didn't touch my garden at all, but she does love veggies.

We have this shrub in our front yard and it's mostly dead. A few branches have leaves and flowers and they look lovely! Does anyone know what it is? I'd love to research it more and figure out if I can bring it back. I'm zone 5.

Give it some all purpose fertilizer and hope for the best.

So reddit agrees that it is a wigelea! I'll cut it way back and fertilize this weekend. I really hope it comes back!

I agree on weigelia! My mom bought one of these this year and it looks just like that. The nursery said that they have a lot of people say they are hard to keep alive and healthy. The colors on them are so pretty, good luck!
