Ms Haspel says that she did not personally appear on the destroyed tapes. She also says that her direct supervisor, alone, made the decision to destroy the torture tapes.

You can include congress in that too. How does that work? Pretty sure Congress most definitely *can* get in trouble for bribery. I assumed this was alluding to lobbying, I.e. legal bribery.

I assumed this was alluding to lobbying, I.e. legal bribery. But secretly funneling money through a third party for special consideration on an issue before public officials who may have some role in decision-making is not lobbying. Lobbyists have to register and disclose their activities. This definitely wasn't that. I don't disagree that the methodology is different, but the fundamental goal ain't that different. Also even with disclosure and registration, it is clear that much of modern lobbying has become legal bribery.

"Novartis paid $400k into the Stormy Daniels slush fund for corporate access to Trump. Maybe this is why Trump lies about cracking down on drug prices?" Someone else points out that payment plans were established to avoid triggers into investigation: This is crazy.

I don't disagree that the methodology is different, but the fundamental goal ain't that different. Also even with disclosure and registration, it is clear that much of modern lobbying has become legal bribery. It's worth noting that lobbying takes on many manifestations. We tend to think of it purely as wealthy corporations spending lots of money to convince members of Congress to create policy in their favor, but there is a ton of lobbying--especially around public health, education, overall community wellbeing--that is valid and necessary advocacy. I won't argue that some manifestations of lobbying today are deeply unethical and questionably bribery, but...lobbying covers a broad range of activities and IS a legal, regulated activity. Bribery on the other hand is actually against the law. It's a critical distinction. Heinrich finally got an answer out of her, sort of. She says that she will not authorize the establishment of interrogation at CIA. she still won't say what she would do if POTUS ordered her to do so.

After Valerie Plame, I can understand the decision to make moves to destroy evidence of agents engaging in torture but it was just....a really, really bad decision.

nope, sorry Senator Blunt, if you want someone to be the CIA Director you don't get to say that their past is irrelevant.

What was that protestor yelling? Aside from "you're a torturer"? I just saw on CNN they were yelling "Bloody Gina"
I feel like that phrase should be workshopped a little bit?

oh geeze. They didn't copy the CIA Legal team on the cable ordering the destruction of the tapes. Good lord. Her response was such bs. The lawyers weren't copied, but they had already been consulted. So they didn't copy them because they were going directly against legal's advice.

Now the argument is that it was ok to destroy the tapes because there's "a written record." Says Tom Cotton, that's totally fine because that's what the Courts do. Because cross examination of a witness is totally the same as waterboarding.

Senator Harris: This hearing is not about the importance of the CIA or its mission, it is about your suitability to serve as director of that agency. And our choice in who we put that position will be a signal to the rest of the world of how we prioritize morality and accountability.

Senator Harris: Do you believe that torture was immoral? Yes or no?
Haspel: Word salad.
Harris: In hindsight, do you believe it was immoral?
Haspel: I believe in the new higher accountability standard--
Harris: GDI. YES OR NO.
Haspel: Army Field Manual tho

Jack Reed asked if she would consider it immoral for a foreign government or terrorist entity to waterboard one of her field agents. She responded with "Civilized nations don't do those things."
Um.
So Jack Reed was like, "......."
Then Tom Cotton interrupted him and said, "We don't waterboard people anymore, GAWD" Jack Reed looked him square in the face and said, "But we did, until this Body made it illegal."

Mark Warner FTW!
He is entering into the record John Brennan's testimony that he opposed EIT at the time and voiced his objections to several at the CIA.
Tom Cotton started shouting at him and Burr had to, twice, tell him to STFU
