I just have to say if you are in the market for a crossover vehicle then I would look at the Chevy Traverse. The 2nd row has great room. The traverse second row pops up as well however I chose captain's chairs so we don't really pop the seat up you just slide back there. The cargo room is greater in the Traverse and the gas mileage is better.
The base Traverse has a standard V6 engine while the Atlas comes with a 4 cylinder engine. That means less power under the hood.
The Atlas is supposed to have more room than what was pictures so I am guessing you just needed to slide the seats up.
I myself did not want bench seating for the second row.
According to Edmunds if you need room for family and don't want a minivan, these two offer nearly as much passenger and cargo space.

I like the bench seat but I'm screwed with accessing the third row right now with a big infant seat and a convertible. I could purchase a smaller infant seat but that seems wasteful. I need to go to a store and test with a bunch of different convertible seats for DS.

brux, thank you for this as I've been eyeing these up as my loyalty to the T&C dwindles.

I wanted captains chairs but those were hard to find (maybe limited production of them?).
I’m happy with the bench seat because it gives DS an area to set things next to him and you can still get into the back really easily.

I did end my edition with Edmunds stating either one was good in lieu of minivan. I tried to end on a positive note.
I would not look at one without the captain's chairs.

I think you need to go and look. The leg room for the 2nd row is a lot. You should easily get your carseats in there and access what you need to regardless of which 2nd row set up you choose.

Do you have a hitch on it? Towing capacity?

Do you have a hitch on it? Towing capacity? We didn't get the hitch package. Nothing to tow. Google tells me this: VW rates the Atlas to tow as much as 5,000 pounds, but only if you opt for the factory-installed trailer hitch that's offered on V6 models. All other Atlas models can tow up to 2,000 pounds.

Can you tilt the second row seat with a car seat in it to access the third row? Uncertain. Will check tomorrow! Pizzaslut, no but you can slide it all the way forward and access that way.

SO's sister bought a new Traverse and I rode in it last weekend. I was surprised at how nice and roomy it was. I love the Atlas too. Both are way over my budget so I'm glad I don't have to pick because it might be tough for me.

I liked this review so much that I'm going to add this to my car list for when my lease is up in July. You need to get money from VW for your glowing reviews complete with photos.
