Also known as the Pinterest Thread, Paint my Built-ins, Do You Hate This and OMG How Cool Is This Thread.
I'm going to AW kitchen things when we get there, but no reason everyone can't use it for general advice, inspiration, ect.

Okay, so I'm thinking one of two kitchen styles right now. My antique China hutch, bakers rack and dining room area rug are all a teal-ish color so I'll be trying to work that into the kitchen. I found a great backsplash that will work beautifully. Option 1: Grey-ish cabinets, dark wooden (bamboo) floor and said green backsplash. These are the two I like best so far. One doesn't look as grey as I'd like but still looks nice imo.

For reference - my hutch and bakers rack. The rug isn't shown, but it's all in the same family.

Option 2 : Something along these lines. A nice cream cabinet, same dark flooring and green backsplash. I think this is too yellow for my taste tho.

I like option 1 better. I think option 2 is pretty yellow but also I have a tiny iPhone and it could be me.
I so badly want to (at the minimum) paint our kitchen, dining, and living room this summer so this may be a bad thread for my H 😏

I love option 2. But agree with going a little less yellow.
I need to get the carpet out of the dining area. My children will not survive toddlerhood if we don't. That's my current obsession.

We are going to be putting down new flooring since I think there's a small subfloor issue in the kitchen, so I've been reading a lot about how to install bamboo (locked or floating) flooring. Laminate is super easy if you're a little handy. *edit - just make sure your subfloor is level

We put that in after ripping up laminate. You don’t have to worry about it getting wet and warping and I think it looks just as nice, if not nicer (imo). It is a little pricy but seems to stand up well and looks nice.

I am all for white/cream cabinets. I think that backsplash is perfect and the cream cabinets would probably make the green colors pop out more and tie in with your existing pieces.
That being said, I also like the 2nd gray pic.

I like the cream kitchen but I don’t think you can go wrong with the other option but I also like it!
I don’t know much about bamboo floors but heard they are soft so can get knocks and dimples easy. I could be wrong. We have vinyl wood like floors in our basement and I love them.
Im really excited for you!

I also like option 2, I think the dark floors, cream cabinets, and teal furniture/rug will be a great combo. I like this cream, with the backsplash - it would look great with dark floors and the teal stuff you have.

I like option one but I think I need to know your style/style the house is. What kind of look? Do you have any inspiration pics?
We have cream/ yellowish cabinets and I like the one you posted if the were less yellow.

It’s decided I’m painting the built ins because I’m not a wood stain color fan. But can I still ask for help with what to put in them? I’m not a Knick-knack person. Currently they hold a lego castle and some random stuff H brought back from his desk at work. I’ve searched Pinterest and it seems silly to buy some random tchotchkes just to fill it. Our dining table will be in front of them once I buy one, but for now there’s a card table as a placeholder.

curmudgeon Do you have any things that are special to you that you want to display? Books? Antique dishes or cups? Things bought on vacation etc I always start there and build on that, see where the colours or themes take me.

I have two glass Disney trinket items that are in there with the castle. That’s about it. Fancy/holiday dishes are currently on the top of the glass kitchen cabinets but I could move them over. They’re pretty to look at and not themed to any one holiday.
I wish we drank because I saw on Pinterest making it into a little bar area. But my 3 year old 1/3 empty bottle of chambord would be quite lonely.

You could remove the glass panels and put almost anything you'd like in there. I love the idea of books, making it an open book case. Unless you have a zillion books though, you'll have plenty of room for other things ha.
I'm 0% creative with things like this though. What color will you paint them?

Just white, to match the kitchen. I wish they were on the opposite wall with the TV to kind of frame it.

curmudgeon I love the idea of painting that built in white and putting stuff in there to display. How about getting a little wine rack for bottles and then another one to hang wine glasses from? You could also do that for beer and display a few beer steins (or pint/mug glassware). I love the idea of displaying nicer dishes and glassware in those cabinets. If you do store dishes or bottles or glass in there though, I’d recommend keeping the glass doors on, just to prevent dust from getting in there. I hate dusting.

August Blooms I like that! While it’s full it’s not junked up which is mostly what I’ve found on Pinterest. Hopefully I can find the box our books are still packed in. Taitai I seriously have no wine glasses. 😬 I will move our dishes over and see how they look and fit. Is it weird to put books and dishes in there?

I think since it’s a dining room, dishes are def okay - especially large serving bowls with a pattern or glassware that catches the light. Books are good too. Maybe you could put books in the cabinets on the far sides, and then dishes/glassware in the center ones? That way you are delineating the contents? If it looks weird together, you could always decide to go only books or only china/glassware/serving bowls/wine rack/etc.

H and I rearranged our living room furniture last night and it looks so good. I don’t know why we had the room set up any other way than how we have it right now.
This seems like the right thread for this info.

Any good recommendations for area rugs? We will probably need 3 for the living, dining room, and a sitting area.

I got both of mine at Lowe's and I highly recommend dropping some money on a quality one (my biggest was ~$400). Be sure the back is nice and soft so you don't have to use a liner to protect hardwood.

Painter is here and making amazing progress, it was amazing to see how fast a professional can get this stuff done. It would take me 2 days to do what he has done in 4 hours.

I actually used nail polish remover on it (thanks ds) and it didn't damage the rug at all. I do have it on a rug pad for floor protection/extra cushion.
