45 is surprisingly calmish today. Like almost soft spoken. its bizarre. I mean the shit coming out of his mouth is abhorrent still but the delivery is 'soft' its freaking me out.

So this popped up on my feed today. I know it's a movie, but the use of the hat is a very startling message.

It's been a while since I've posted here, but I just saw that Cynthia Nixon is making a bid for NY governor. I'm not a fan of Cuomo, but I'm not sure how I feel about a celebrity bid. Even if she is progressive. I wish Zephyr Teachout was going to make a go of it again, but I see that she is endorsing Nixon.

Oh, I remember. We started watching The Looming Tower on Hulu. I really enjoyed the book and have been looking forward to the show. We're 2 (3?) episodes in. Anyway, I thought it might deserve its own thread, but do I make it on the TV board or Politics? Make it here. I wanna discuss. (Zomg it's so good)

I was coming here to share this and got sidetracked. Petty Me is winning a lot lately because I'm cackling again that this is recorded for the world to see.

I hear you, but I am so over Cuomo, and the trains are just-- completely broken and if she is going to make the subway + education as part of her platform, while also running left of Cuomo-- well then I'm cautiously optimistic right now. I feel like if she aligns herself with other smart people then it could be a good thing? Maybe? I think that it will be hard to unseat him without name recognition. I know it is brand new so I have to read more.

ETA -- the following has no spoilers, FYI. Since no one has told me to #startathread about The Looming Tower, I'll just say my main takeaway so far is that it's supposed to paint a picture of an intelligence community that was dysfunctional and didn't work together, and it does. But I couldn't help but contrast it to today while watching. That was our government at a time when the leadership was imperfect but overall, competent and strong. Add in today's turnover, lack of leadership, constant distractions, lack of focus -- it made me feel overwhelmingly that we are more vulnerable than ever to terrorism, and probably overdue for something really, really bad. I hope I'm wrong. Sorry if that's distressing to hear. I hope the grunts at the agencies are still getting the time and resources they need to devote to those counter-terrorism initiatives. Maybe it's a time for bottom-up leadership. Please take heart that there a chance dedicated civil servants hard at work who keep their heads down and do their jobs regardless of what's going on in the executive branch. The bulk of government roles are apolitical and the vast majority of civil servants are just good people trying to serve their country. Yes, disastrous leadership is problematic, but the deep level stuff is carrying on as usual.

I think Teachout is actually going to be on her campaign-- I will look for it on twitter.
edited to add, she is the campaign treasurer. "Yup, Cynthia Nixon has a campaign account. The treasurer is none other than Cuomo's 2014 primary opponent (and Democratic Party committee member) Zephyr Teachout."

BTW the Dow is down about 400 pts. Also the lastest CR runs out this week (I think) 45 is meeting with the Saudi Ambassador tomorrow (he is also a Prince and brother to the Crown Prince), currently talking to Wolf and talking about Iran and how the US needs to support SA. I got tickled (if that's the right word) by NPR coverage this morning talking about MBS' involving SA in the Yemeni civil war, fighting against Iran-backed Houthi rebels, and the depiction of Iran as being a country of religious radicals. I'm like...have y'all never heard of Wahhabism? Are you aware of all the religious strictures placed particularly on women, including not being able to drive (which will not go into effect until June) and strict dress codes which are just as bad as anything going on in Iran? Are we not going to talk about the fact that they are a dictatorship run by a single family??? I have feelings about this. I have never understood why the US is so friendly w/ SA (apart from oil) while we criticize so many other Muslim countries for behavior that is no more oppressive and sometimes far less so. Speaking of which, it looks like there will be a floor vote this week on SJ Res 54

I know it is brand new so I have to read more. Oh definitely– I will be supporting her. I just am wary of any celebrity bid for a major political office. It seems like celebrities always have to start with the big offices– governor, senator, president? Why not a run for school board, city council, or even the House of Representatives? And I wish it had been reverse with Teachout, and Nixon was using her capital to endorse her, instead of Teachout serving on Nixon's campaign. That said, I'll take what I can get, and I do realize that the celebrity name recognition may be what's required to upset Cuomo. From the very little I've heard so far, I do like her platform. Also, I didn't realize that she sends her kids to public school. That seems unusual for a a celebrity and is cool.

As of right now, President Trump hasn't made a single comment about the bombings in Austin. Not even a "thoughts and prayers." I railed about this a little over in the old thread, but if this had happened in, say, Pittsburg or Cincinnati...hell, even Dallas or Houston, the response would be 100% different. I've been very disappointed in how all of my Republican leaders/representatives--because that's all I have at almost every level of gov't--have said, or in most cases not said, about the bombings. Pretty quiet from Abbott too on that front, despite it being his own state. Just an announcement about funding the reward for information leading to an arrest.

coconutbacon, I agree w/you 100%. If nothing else I'm hoping that it challenges Cuomo so that he is forced to... try a little harder.

Pretty quiet from Abbott too on that front, despite it being his own state. Just an announcement about funding the reward for information leading to an arrest. Cornyn has said about as much. Ted Cruz has said nothing. (Motherfucker.) Mike McCaul has even alluded to "terror" (he represents one of the bombed areas, I believe--it's hard to tell though given that there are 3 different Republican representatives in the span of about 2 miles over in this part of town). That's pretty much it, though. Republicans don't give a hot shit about Austin. In all this, I just keep remembering the time Greg Abbott talked condescendingly about Austin's "smell" and openly refers to us as a blight on the state, a festering wound. All of them can go fuck themselves. It pisses me off that pretty much all of them will be re-elected.

DS loved the animated version of the Marlon Bundo book on Last Week Tonight and wants the book for Easter. I might have to get the hardcover and kindle version because I love that Jim Parsons narrates it.
