Tell me all the things I need to know as a person without a stash and how to do all the cloth diapering things.

I'll take pictures of the random junk I have later and then y'all can tell me what I need to add. Because I know I need to add.

The usual thought is 36 changes for newborn, 24 for one-size.
Lots of people think skipping a newborn stash makes sense, because it only fits for like 2-4 months. But you go through so many damn diapers during that period, and the diapers have such a short use, that it's pretty easy to buy a good stash used, or sell it once you're done.
Though for sure use up those disposables people give you!

I love diapers. And I'm so excited my son PTed last month so I won't have three in cloth diapers. Because that would have been a LOT OF LAUNDRY.

I cloth diaper. I skip the newborn stage but have about 26 diapers that fit starting at 12lbs. We mostly use the AIOs because my husband prefers those to pockets but I have some really cute pocket diapers too because I couldn’t resist when I saw them on Etsy. I have a sprayer attached to the toilet in the kids’ bathroom and then we use an Ubbi diaper pail and a washable bag for soiled diapers. Then the entire bag just gets dumped in the wash like 2x a week. I’m terrible and machine dry my diapers too. But they’re on baby number 3 so it seems to be working ok. I’m also obsessed with Biokleen sprayed on the diapers before they go in the pail. It helps so much with any smells and stains.

FWIW, I bought some disposables (because other people sometimes use them when watching my kids, and daycare) and just went right to size 1. I fold over the waist if needed. People are weird about cloth diapering. You'll probably use the disposables eventually. Whatever.

If you’re going the prefold route I’d buy soonish so you can have them prepped in time, since it takes a few washes.

Cloth diapers make me so stupidly happy. It's totally ridiculous but I love seeing them drying on the clothes line. Which happens like 3 times a year when it's sunny and I'm not feeling too lazy. But we used disposables often too!
I wash 3-4 times a week and use original tide-which I use for all of our laundry so we don't have to buy anything extra.
I used prefolds and covers for my newborn stash because it was the most inexpensive system and I wasn't sure if it was something we'd be into. I started buying all in ones when the newborn covers were getting tight and just bought what I thought was pretty. Most of them worked for us and I just sold the ones I didn't like.

We cloth diaper about 50% of the time. MH is actually the one who is the most into it. We ended up doing a load of diapers at least every other day. We just bought a Charlie Banana starter pack 50% off at BBB for our new baby. We'll see how it goes.

Ooh yay for this thread! We are cloth diapering!! We have disposables left over from the hospital, plus we bought one more thing of 32 newborn size just as we were kind of figuring things out. I would say we mostly are using cloth at this point.
I went ahead and bought some newborn size, but I was careful because I didn't want to buy too many not knowing how big she was going to be. I was assuming she was going to be little, but you never know. We have a couple of Lil Joey's, newborn rumparooz covers, some blueberry Capri covers, and osocozy better fit prefolds. I also bought a couple of newborn size items off of happy beehinds. One cover, and one all in one. Most items I bought used. I figured once she got here I would figure out what fit her and what I like and we would buy more of our favorite things. That is, if we thought she was going to be wearing them for a little bit. And I do think they will probably end up lasting us a couple of months considering most of what she's wearing she is wearing on the smallest snap setting so I know I'll be able to go out on the snaps and have them last as she gains some weight.
The disposables we bought were seriously $10 for 32 diapers! Which is crazy to me considering she will probably use that many diapers in 3 to 4 days. I think it's definitely worth buying the newborn diapers that we did. Likely we could have saved some money if we had bought in bulk or maybe bought a different brand. But I didn't want to buy a ton because we're trying to switch to using cloth all the time.
For one size, all I have right now are a bunch of all the pockets that my sister actually ended up buying for me. Along with some prefolds that are kind of thin and I don't know anything about them. Then I also just have a few random things. Definitely none of them are going to fit her anytime soon.
I have done one load of laundry so far and it seems to have gone well. Diapers are not dirty. We are using tide powder. I joined the fluff love University Facebook page, and have read through all of their files and read a lot of the troubleshooting posts and it's definitely really helped me kind of decide how to wash when to wash and stuff like that. There are a bunch of cloth diaper Facebook pages whether it just be photos, talking about anything, buy sell trade pages. I am not a Facebook person, and I have never joined any groups on Facebook, but I am kind of obsessed with all of the cloth diaper pages.

So you might be able to trade in some of those diapers that were given to you for newborn or size ones?

This post inspired me to make the move from lurker to poster. Hope you all don't mind if I jump right in!
I've cloth diapered two kids so far and I'm looking forward to continuing with this baby. When I first started out with my oldest, I ended up with a mishmash of diapers: prefolds, fitted, AIOs and pockets. I bought things on sale to try, found people destashing on craiglist, etc. Having such a random collection of diapers was great as a first-time mom; it helped me figure out what I liked.
This time I'm all about simplicity. I'm sticking with prefolds and covers. I was always annoyed having to stuff pockets and waiting for AIOs to dry. And my microfiber got the stinks. I vote prefolds and covers all the way. I like the flip covers and the Green Mountain Diaper prefolds.
Since I'm entering new territory with a girl this time, I'm wondering if anyone has any special folds for girls? For the boys, I just did a tri-fold and then folded the extra material in the front, if that makes sense?

Nuggetrn, just a heads up that Fluff Love on FB is a little aggressive and their wash recommendations are not as works-for-everyone as they imply!
If it works for you, fab, but I (and many others) have escaped because their recommendations and rules were just bananas for our washers and families. So keep your tin foil hat on and don’t let them brainwash you.
Yay diapers!

cooperation, welcome! I have one boy and one girl and am expecting in March. I love prefolds. I didn’t end up really doing any special folds for the girl vs the boy - she needed absorbency at the base of the crotch, but luckily, my prefolds seem fully absorbent enough that they just wick up to absorb wherever needed! Welcome and yay 3rd babies!

Mostly I have appreciated some of their files on detergent and info on how to wash and sanitize the preloved stuff I have bought. Plus apparently I have a washer that is notorious for suds error issues. So it was kind of nice to see those posts when my washer decided to suds on me while I was prepping stuff. I knew not to freak out.

Like, they say using Charlie's soap is not getting my diapers clean and not safe for my children. It's going to burn their butts off. And in the FB group, they were a$$holes about it.
But... four plus years of diapering later, in multiple homes with different washers, I'm gonna say I think it's okay for me.

I have way more diapers than I actually need so I do laundry every four or five days. I use kanga care wet bags to store my dirty diapers.
For washing, there is no one right way to do it. I do two cycles and I use a relatively small amount of detergent (usually tide or gain) because my washer makes a ton of suds. I dry all my inserts in the dryer and hang all the shells (I use mainly pocket diapers, prefolds, and Grovia ONEs, which are kind of an aio but have a snap in insert).
I thought I didn't mind stuffing pockets until my son was around 17 months. Then I was just over it. I've been selling some of my pockets and will probably pick up a few more ONEs when the new baby is ready for one-size diapers.

Also, I never used cloth at night. I was way too desperate for sleep too even attempt to experiment with that, the thought of dealing with leaks and wet clothes in the middle of the night really deterred me from trying.

If you're interested send me a PM and I can send you some pictures or more info.

So I am doing my washing today. Tell me what I need to do to prefolds to prep them. I did get the Osocozy Better fits from so many recommendations, but I can't quite decipher what their wash instructions are. If I'm understanding correctly, the covers/pockets are cold rinse, then wash hot? And the liners are also wash hot? Do I have to prewash liners several times like I think I do with prefolds to prep them?

Do you just mean microfleece liners? You can just wash them once.
The cotton prefolds just need a bunch of hot washes to build up their absorbency. I'd just do everything in a load together and pull out anything with PUL after the first cycle.

Sorry, PUL would be the covers. 3-5 is probably fine. You can do them wirh towels or other laundry if you want to save time and water.

We officially made the switch to cloth yesterday, after running through the hospital freebies and her poop was no longer meconium.
I think the NB sizes are actually a little too big still because of how small she is, but we're both really satisfied with the results so far. 😊

I got a couple of different brands to try out just to see what I would like. I think thirsties size 1 covers are bigger than the others. Newborn Rumparooz fit decently but were still a little big in the beginning. My favorite for when she was still around 7 lbs were blueberry capris (and still my favorite at her current weight). Comically though I have 2 blueberry AIOs that are newborn but are definitely too big right now. Rumparooz fit a little better now at almost 9 lbs but I still am not impressed with the way the thirsties fit. Its been kind of fun figuring this out 😄😄

The gaskets don't really even come close to closing around her legs tightly, but she doesn't really produce much waste right now, either, so even with a big poop, we haven't had a blowout problem. It's definitely a lot of fun to figure this out with everyone's help! 😊😊
