I think my baby is maybe the youngest on the board so I’m curious to what you all have been doing, or plan to do. I barely remember this part of DS growing up!
Are you buying or making purees? Baby led weaning? What flavors have you tried?

We started a few weeks ago but she isn’t really into it so we have backed off for now. I’m thinking to try again soon. She will be 6 months on Wednesday.
The only purée I made was sweet potato. We have tried that, oatmeal, apples and avocado.
I wish I wasn’t too nervous with BLW because it seems more convenient but I’m too anxious about choking.

I've tried with the twins for a few weeks now but their tongue thrust reflexes are still really strong. I started with extremely watery oatmeal and they weren't interested. Started making purees of single foods - apples, bananas, pears, sweet potato, carrots - they will taste but don't seem all that interested. D is definitely more interested than E.
It's funny how different each kid is because DS1 couldn't get enough and we started rigt around 5 1/2 months. The twins just turned 6 months on the 8th.
Once they start to get the hang of it, we'll move more into BLW.

We’re going to start this week. N turns 6mo next week. We’re going to try purées and just mashed food like avocado (don’t think you can reeeeally purée it much?) we will see how it goes. 🤷🏻♀️

I started j on solids at 4.5 months . We did oatmeal for 2 weeks until he got the hang of it. Since then I've done one new puree every 5 days. We've done apples, pears, sweet potatoes, sweet potatoes with apples, and cinnamon sweet potatoes. I made avocado last nigjt. He loves #apples with sweet potatoes. I have the best luck feeding him an hour after he has had his bottle. We use little bowls and soft spoons. I make everything with the baby bullet. I use steamer bags to steam everything. I figure I'll make all his fruits and veggies but I'm buying meats. Everything is purees right now since he won't be 6 months for 2 more weeks.

We started with two weeks of oatmeal then added fruits and veggies one at a time. I puree as much of the fruit and veggies as I can but buy meat. J has loved everything but meat so I am not sure I can keep up with the food. We also started giving him mum mum crackers.
I did the same with DAD. I would not recommend going crazy with baby food recipes, just steam and puree the basics. Once you get into that they are likely ready to chew most of that stuff anyway and the stress is not worth it especially if you are working.

I started baby h at 5 months and a week. We did oatmeal cereal thinned with breast milk for three days and then sweet potato puree also thinned. I do one food for three days before introducing another. We've since done carrots and green beans. With ds1, I made myself crazy making purees, so this time I've just used Gerber first foods purees. He loves solids which is soooo different from his brother. Carrots are his favorite so far.

I started off with sweet potato, but that was a mistake. It was a little harsh on his system. We’ve tried avocado once as well. I took a break and today gave him cereal cut with breast milk and I’m hoping it’s easier for him to digest. I think I’ll do banana in a couple days.
We did a tiny bit of peanut butter today too, just in case. I wanted to get it out of the way.

We started a few weeks ago. At first he was interested but couldn’t figure out swallowing. We started with quinoa and he loves that. I already puréed and froze carrots, apple, pear mango, sweet potato, squash, zucchini, broccoli, peas and green berms. He has had everything but peas and green beans. They are gassy and he already struggles.
I know mix some quinoa with banana and some apple with sweet potato. (We pass the allergy test).
He is actually more interested in our food and I know so many of my friends who BLW, but I am so afraid!

I started U at 4.5 because she showed interest. We did avocado first then banana, pear, apple, pumpkin, sweet potato. She's loved it all and can't get enough

We started avocado last night! It went terribly. He gagged so much and threw it all up. We laughed so hard, I felt bad. he looked at us like WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME!?!?! I think it was a texture thing, because at first he smiled and didn't seem to hate it, but when we put more in his mouth he freakkkked out. it was really entertaining and im sure im a terrible person for laughing at him so much and trying again. oh well.

We did oatmeal & sweet potatoes this week. DD loved it. She ate quite a bit too. 🤷🏻♀️ She’s my chunky always hungry baby.

We’ve done rice cereal with peanut butter mixed in and sweet potato.
It’s difficult to fit it in, because R is only awake 1.5-2 hours at a time. I find it easier to give her solids before a bottle, so I usually do that.

So we started to use a spoon with his green beans and he tolerated eating them last night! He'd make a face on and off but he loves having the spoon in his mouth and kept reaching for it even though the GB were in it, and he ate a decent amount Does anyone give a snack during the day like cereal? My nanny mentioned maybe we should start introducing a solids snack time around lunchtime and suggested giving him cereal. What do you guys do? I feel so lost and DH and her have such different ideas, and our pediatrician is old-school and we don't see her til March, so IDK what to do

Right now I’m only offering once a day since she doesn’t seem interested. Since you just started I don’t think a snack is necessary unless he is really showing interest.

jt2378, I guess we started green beans on Monday night with a spoon but he seemed confused about the spoon. Last night he was all about it. We did the avocado with our fingers bc it was just mashed not totally pureed, which i also think is why he didn't like it very much - more of a texture issue. Thanks, I didn't think a snack was necessary but I guess if we offer it and he's into it, it won't hurt?

Just keep offering BM first, it’s the most important right now.

addymac Do you mean a snack, like Cheerios or like baby oatmeal or rice cereal? I’ve just been trying to fit in 1-3 feedings when I can. It is what it is. I’m not worried about a schedule. But, they’re to young to introduce Cheerios or puffs, if that’s what your nanny meant.

If he gets cranky at lunch time we offer him half a serving if purees but no snack. However , I don't see why you can't offer cereal as a meal option. I mix oatmeal with J's bananas foe lunch sometimes. But like I said, he eats a 2 oz. Puree at dinner mist nights and he's only had the lunch puree a handful of times. We still feed the same amount of formula though .

They basically dissolve on contact and he practices coordination. He gets that between lunch and dinner or in the car.

This is a really dumb question but when do you stop giving purees and start giving more textured foods?

This is a really dumb question but when do you stop giving purees and start giving more textured foods? Chunkier purees can start at 6 months. I know baby led weening can start between 6 and 8 months which would be actual food. I think they are supposed to sit on their own, have lost tongue thrust, and handle textures ok. I've also seen most real food be advised around 8 to 10 months if not BLW. I figure I'll do purees until I've introduced all fruits and veggies then maybe try a bit of real food so at least 7 months for us as we have a lot more to try, he still has a little tongue theust, and he needs assistance to sit.

I swear this kid is not the least bit interested in any food! We gave her some biscuit type mum mums and she kinda was into it but has the tongue thrust big time. Oh well, I’ll keep trying. She just loves the boob 🤷🏻♀️
