I also had a feeling we were going to be seeing the doctor that delivered the babies again soon since they were talking about that lemon quote he had told Jack after they lost Kyle. That kind of bothered me because there was an episode (I think season 1) where Kate said Jack used to say that "all the time." But obviously not if Rebecca couldn't remember it. Just a little thing, but I was like, "no."

I also heard “bec” at the vending machine but since I watch with closed captioning, I thought I heard wrong since they said “ma’am” I’m reading now from an interview that it was in fact jack saying Bec, the subtitles were just wrong. His spirit saying goodbye 😭 Omgggggg 😭

On a related note, I put dinner in the crockpot this morning before I left the house, and I feel more anxious about it than usual. Me tooooo 😬

This is terrible and unfair but i am feeling very hostile feelings towards Kate. I’m excited because there is a lot more to explore with the flash forwards and also in the Jack storyline (Vietnam experience). Me too. I can't imagine how scary that would be being in that situation but she wasted a shit ton of time not listening when he was trying to get them out. Then he wasn't even off the roof after finally getting them out and she s screaming and crying about the damn dog. No wonder she has so much guilt honestly. The fire wasn't her fault at all but i really understand why she has such strong feelings about it now

My close friend and I watched last night after her super bowl party and I yelled at her to get in the room because it was starting. She had been in the other room making sure to unplug the crock pot.

I was also screaming at the TV for them all to get the hell away from the house! I mean, I feel like if I were the kid or the parent in that situation I would either run away terrified or I would be screaming at my kids to run away from the house. I also think Rebecca and Randall should have been climbing out of the window together as soon as he got to their room. It seemed like there was lots of time to try and logically think things over and I guess I wouldn’t expect it to happen like that in real life. Jack told them too, but they didn't listen and were waiting on him This makes me so mad all over again. Listen to him! Get out of the damn house. Leave the dog. My god.

I watched live last night and am paying for it today, but I'm so glad I watched.
I can see I'm in the minority here but I was disappointed in the twist that the social worker was adult Tess. It seemed kind of cheap to me to do a complete bait-and-switch like that. Although I'm conflicted because it makes me really happy that she decided to do that with her life.
I don't read too much into the flash forward or that just Randall was there for dinner. It's exactly how he described to her in her room so I don't think it's an omen of something sad to come.

I just watched. Not sure why, but I felt his actual death scene was not that "moving" to me. I cried during the fire scenes, that was really intense but then the actual death was like a quarter of that emotion. Maybe just me. I also am not intuitive and didn't put together that was older Tess...

I just finished. I sobbed through the whole thing. I agree some elements were not realistic but the emotions of each character just cut me like a knife & tore me to pieces. Also I’ve always been #teamkevin and he made me cry so hard this episode.

I really hope Rebecca called 911 while she and Randall were in the bedroom.
I feel irrational anger towards Kate too. Your father just risked his life to save you and you are going to ask about your dog? I don't know. Maybe she didn't think Jack was going to go back in for the dog.

Here’s something a little interesting for you. Fan theory. I was reading a FB post and people were saying that they believe he was already having heart failure or heart distress before the fire. The way he woke up all hot and sweaty and sort of shook out his left arm. He took this big gulp of water. He was sweaty. Rebecca didn’t wake up sweaty (from the heat of a fire), just him. He didn’t want to eat food while they watched the super bowl in the episode before. He came down and drank some water when Randal got home that night. Lots of scenes in the day leading up to it all were with him drinking water. So someone said if all that was right, then the pain in his arm from the heart attack is what woke him up and potentially what saved the entire family’s lives.
Thoughts?

I would have to go back and watch because I can't remember specifics. Not quite the same thing but I was coming to say I think he knew he was going to die like had a premonition or something (or honestly just common sense from being in there so long) and that's why he took the time to grab Kate's tapes for her. Because she was always the one that needed extra love from him. I personally think he was acting a little strange even in the ambulance, like he knew something was wrong but didn't want to alarm Rebecca or his kids. I definitely think he felt that way in the hospital. I can't remember for sure but did he send Rebecca out of the room or was it her choice? Because I also had the thought that if he did it, maybe he didn't want her to witness him dying

I actually remember at the beginning of the episode wondering what was going on with him when he seemed to wake up suddenly and appeared to be in pain. I had forgotten about it once things got underway.

I was sobbing from the very first scene. I stood no chance. Loved the twist with Tess and old Randall at the end. That got me going with the tears again.

I can see that The question is - it’s been 20 years. If they (his family) don’t know that’s what really happened by now, there’s probably no chance of them finding out. So I don’t really know how you prove that to be true without them having known about this all along. Or maybe they find out in the next few episodes (in the 90s). But then would Kate still really blame herself after all these years?

I think she would still blame herself. I don't think she'll ever be able to let that go, but I hope she can make peace with it. The smoke inhalation seems to be what triggered the heart attack even if he had the symptoms already. But maybe without the fire it would have been longer before he had one.

And maybe that's they the crockpot is innocent? That's actually been bothering me. Um yes, its still the reason for the fire and as it stands now, he died from a heart attack because of the smoke inhalation. From the fire that the crockpot started. Don't try to be cute, Crockpot. (Disclaimer: Not actually bothering me, bothering me. Making me want to argue with commercials, bother me).

Watching now. Wtf. Go out the GD window people. Running across the hall; c'mon.
I agree with that heart attack theory - that something was going on already. That was my first thought when they showed him waking up looking uncomfortable.

I'm rewatching and I can't blame Kate. I feel like she was just screaming for the dog to try to get him to come out. Jack made the decision to go back in because he couldn't stand to see her upset.

I made a conscious effort to keep reminding myself this is a tv show so that I wouldn’t be an emotional wreck. The fire was intense the death scene was not as sad as I thought. I tested up with her saying she had to tell her kids because it’s something I’ve thought about and just can’t actually imagine. I lost it when Randall was talking to Tess. That is what really hit me hard.
Interesting theory on the heart attack. I thought something seemed off when he woke up and I thought is he drunk? Then I got lost in the story and forgot about it until reading this thread.
