I thought the old guy said something about the switch acting funny. Maybe I misheard. Oh! I didn't even hear that. Maybe he did. Yeah, the switch was glitchy, but Rebecca was pregnant with triplets when he gave it to them, so it lasted them another 17 years or so.

I was bummed that we have to wait until Super Bowl Sunday to watch the episode, but I think it makes it way more real to the audience since he died on Super Bowl Sunday 20 years ago. You know this connection seems like it would be super obvious to viewers....my mind is blown.

So imagine having just watched the Super Bowl in our real lives and then following it up with Jack's death...sure makes it feel more... real? Emotional?

Goes back for the dog or the tape, I'm guessing. It's just odd cause I saw something where whatshisface who plays Jack says that Jack dies in a way that basically no one expected...but this is 100% expected if he dies in the fire. So there's either more to it or it's kind of a let down. I feel Jack deserves a better death than DIAF. Dog lives, tho, cause we have already seen a flashback from after the fire where Kate is at Miguel's with the dog. I think he doesn’t die in the fire but maybe in the hospital after, smoke inhalation or something. Because the kids at miguel’s in the flashback— they look upset but not *that* devastated (like they don’t look like their dad just died). Like maybe Rebecca went w Jack to the hospital & sent the kids to wait at Miguel’s. So Kate says we need to call Kevin (to tell him about the fire). Which would explain why Rebecca isn’t there with the kids (why wouldn’t she be with them if jack is dead) and why she drives back past the house a day or so later with all his things & she’s still in the Steelers jersey bc she probably spent the night @ the hospital or something like that. Just my guess! I do think it’s too obvious that he dies right in the fire. ohhh that makes sense and if it was smoke inhalation that could be why his necklace was ok

so Rebecca had not turned it off at all. I wonder if Jack hadn't been woken up and cleaned if it would have happened. I wonder if we will get to see her deal with guilt

Maybe Jack goes back in to save Kevin, who he doesn't know isn't home, and trips over the dog and hits his head and dies from that?
I am grasping at straws over how Kate can blame herself!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or, as we've mentioned previously, Kate took the battery from the smoke alarm for her music player or something so that's why she feels guilty and it really has nothing to do with the dog at all even a little bit. Jack goes in to save Kevin, who he doesn't know is gone, and the reason why Kate is still so protective over Kevin is because all those years ago when she told Randall that Kevin should "hear it from her" she never told him that Jack died/was injured trying to save him. The only person who knew Kevin wasn't in the house was Rebecca, so perhaps she never got to tell Jack and she'd not know why he went back in so she wouldn't be mad at Kevin. I don't know I'm spiraling.

I thought Jack knew Kevin wasn't there though? or are we assuming the fire doesn't happen right away?

Wait I just remembered something... none of Jacks belongings in the front seat were burned. And Rebecca had them in a bag like he was at the hospital. We discussed this before I think? So maybe there is a twist Yes this is what I’m thinking! He dies at the hospital from complications from the fire. It has to be that same day or the day after bc she is wearing the Steelers jersey in the car. Or could it be a few days later? Or even weeks? If the fire burned up most/all of their belongings, the Steelers shirt could be one of the only pieces of clothing she has left. Sure she probably bought some more clothes in the next few days/weeks, but maybe she wore that shirt often for a while since she didn't have much else? Maybe I am overthinking this but I think there will be a twist and the cause of Jack's death will be a surprise. I remember reading an interview a while ago that the cause of death would be unexpected and clearly at this point everyone expects it to be from the fire and/or smoke inhalation.

I wonder if the dog dies with him Kevin If I don’t see you before work tomorrow I love you You owe us an apology Dad

I thought Jack knew Kevin wasn't there though? or are we assuming the fire doesn't happen right away? Also when Jack came downstairs in the middle of the night and Randall was eating cereal he said "I thought you were Kevin." I don't think Rebecca told him he was staying at Sophie's.

Our smoke detectors are hard wired with a battery backup. I took out a battery today because the one in the basement was chirping and MH forgot to get more on the way home. Must get more tomorrow, evem though we probably need to replace all of them because they're over 20 years old. The one I took the battery out of is in the basement utility room and needs to be moved because in the summer it goes off when we shower. This show is telling me I need to get my ass in gear and replace them PLEASE REPLACE THEM!!! I think it's something like max 10 years for smoke detectors. We've had them tested and they're operation, but it's on our short term to do list. We do have some cheaper non-hardwired backups too

I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said, but just wanted to share that 1990s Rebecca is my least favorite. I feel like they don't make her look very 90s and she certainly doesn't look like she's in her late 40s. I always have trouble placing what time period it is when I see her in that iteration until I see the kids. We actually did the math last night...provided the kids were born on Jack's 36th birthday as is shown in the pilot (I think?), unless Rebecca is a lot younger than him, they're both supposedly early 50s in last night's flashback. They don't look early 50s at all. Rebecca present-day looks closer to that age.

Well he has to die that night either way. Since they showed Kevin making out with Sophie in the woods the night he dies. And Kevin said that night of the fire there was a party in the woods.

There has to be something with the dog for her Kate to have dog-related PTSD.

I can’t stop replaying the scene last night with that song happening at the same time. It’s killing me. I now keep picturing them all getting out and feeling momentarily relieved, but knowing he won’t make it. I can’t believe how upset I’m getting about a fictional character’s death we have known is coming. Ugh

Wow I hadn’t gone and read back all these theories until after I just posted. You guys are going crazy trying to figure this out lol. I really think this is it. I think they were saying it’s unexpected because it is - we wouldn’t have thought a fire until Rebecca pulled in front of the house and it was burned down, and then the other clues started popping up. I think they expect us to know it’s the fire (or complications from it) at this point. Just my thought. I think it has to be related to going back for the dog and dying from smoke inhalation or something. Kate feels so responsible and SO emotionally connected to the dog thing. I remember Rebecca driving with his ring and other items beside her. It makes sense that she was at the hospital with him and stuck in the same clothes and he didn’t make it.

Kevin already has it at this point so the necklace would be safe from the fire regardless.

I love reading all the theories.
I also think smoke inhalation. I think he gets out of the fire but dies shortly after escaping from that. Either Kate went back for the dog so he ran in to get her or he went to get the dog for her.
In the preview, Rebecca also seems to be frantically grabbing stuff of a nightstand before escaping? So she might have grabbed a bunch of jewelry or something before she headed out?
I do hope that the tape somehow made it (but not at the expense of his life)
