thread from @abbysyarns, starts "Let's have a thread real quick about getting called out as a white woman about how your activism isn't quite cutting the mustard, shall we?" She absolutely nails it. As a tangent from that thread, fighting the socialization of politeness for women in WASP culture is a huge part of the battle. I’ve been having a lot of conversations lately with my mom about it. I don’t think that the problems with tone policing and dismissing messages because they aren’t delivered politely had ever really occurred to her. Politeness/civility was one of the key values she was raised with and it has been interesting watching her work past that.

In case you all were wondering. The army corps of engineers is not doing their job well, according to Speaker Ryan.

I struggle with this a lot and have to constantly remind myself that just because someone isn't going out of their way to be polite doesn't mean I can't absorb the message. Or that non-politeness = rude and not worth listening to/conversing with.

Because my initial reaction is but it does affect me too. Then I have to check myself. So its something I am still learning as well. I dont ever want/mean to offend so really learning to listen is important.

The pussy hats story I shared yesterday was posted in RISE and WW are losing their minds. Blah. I am far from perfect and I can be stubborn, but I just cannot wrap my head around not listening in a case like this. ETA: That makes me sound like I'm bragging. I don't mean to. I won't lie; the article did make me uncomfortable. I just...I think being part of conversations here and being part of the local BLM FB group have given me a perspective (not sure that is the right word?) that has really made me work hard at listening. And as I said, I'm not perfect or always the best listener, but I don't understand not trying, you know?

Someone I know posted a photo of them and then took a long quote from some political "philosopher bard" Phil Rockstroh, that accuses her of "New Age snake-oil peddling patter," and calls her the "virgin queen of the neoliberal order." Am I racing to nominate Oprah for president? No. But comparing her to Trump because of her celebrity or financial success is really gross.

Everything is vry srs and no one makes jokes about anything or is allowed to be happy about something for 5 minutes.

And on that same topic, has anyone watched any of the new Chappelle comedy specials? I watched two over the weekend and I have thoughts, if anyone would like to discuss.
I think he made some good points and it made me think a lot about how much the world/comedy has changed since his show on Comedy Central.

That's a fascinating little tale.
Fusion was hired by a law firm trying to alter/shut down the Magnitsky Act. They tried to subpoena Bill Browder to find out why TF he anonymously told DOJ about what happened to Magnitsky, leading to them launching sanctions. Browder, you'll remember, surrendered his US citizenship before moving to the UK and, subsequently, making $$$$$$ in Russia and Eurasia. Since he's not a US citizen and has no "business or property" in the US, he claimed immunity from the US judicial process. Except he has a mansion in Aspen, registered under a shell corporation, and a few cars, registered in his name.
So Glenn Simpson served him a subpoena in the parking lot of the Aspen Institute hours before he was supposed to give a speech there.
