Started calling around for child care this morning. I’m a complete noob and these prices are not amusing me. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171106/208aea589880dc16b1bdcc92ea1bc3d0.jpg)

Good luck cornpop! Happy birthday katietopaz! Eta: I see you updated cornpop. I'm sorry for the worry still. Fwiw my DD was a lazy baby and they were always having me chug water or juice to get her to move for my scans and NSTs. She is fine and perfectly healthy just didn't move much.

Rama, I'm glad your scan went well and you got a low risk assessment. Fx that baby is a little more cooperative at your next scan. cornpop, I'm glad your scan went well too. My DD didn't really move a lot either...I mostly felt her when she got the hiccups. Maybe your dr can alleviate some of your fears.

clementine - yeah, people tell you to save for college but fuck childcare costs more than college!

Rama and cornpop - so happy to hear about the great scans! Rama - I had to go back 3x with my first - little stinker. clementine -- where do you live? I'm outside of DC in the Southwest 'burbs in VA, our 2 year old is $283 a week right now.. a newborn to 2 years is $314 a week. That doesn't include the before and after for the boys (another $265 a week for both). Hopefully you can add that all up and feel better some! We are seriously looking at the au pair route at this point.

clementine I’m close-ish to yianna (i think) and we haves lucked out twice with very affordable and very high quality in home care. DD did extremely poorly in a DC center and we’ve been really happy with inhome care. I feel like it get a horrible reputation and was very against it at the beginning but it is 100% the right choice for DD. One of the little girls will go to kinder around the time we need care for this baby and I’m trying to nicely figure out how to call dibs on her spot 😂 Make a spreadsheet of all the important stuff to compare. It felt very scary and overwhelming at first and it was helpful to know that i had that list to help guide questions each time.

I wish we could do an in home day care - they are generally more affordable BUT the hours don't work with our crazy commutes. le sigh.

We’re SUPER lucky and she’s open from 6-6 AND keeps a car seat for us in case our friend needs to take DD home with her. Thankfully our schedules work out that she’s usually only there 715-415, but it also means DH and i don’t always get to see a lot of each other :/

Rama Hooray again for good news from your scan - that's wonderful that they cut your low-risk designation down even more! I'm sorry that you do have to wait awhile for your repeat scan, but I hope it goes very quickly! cornpop I'm so glad you had a good scan!! I understand being worried, but at this stage especially I think that's super normal. DS wasn't moving around at all at my a/s last week and I felt like I was feeling him move much less than before, and this week I feel him spinning around in there a lot. Hang in there - I hope you start feeling baby move more frequently and consistently soon!

Happy birthday katietopaz . Thanks for all of the good thoughts! It is definitely a girl! She really barely moved at all so my concerns aren't entirely relieved but the ultrasound tech said everything looked okay so I'm going to just assume I'm being crazy. Children exist mainly to drive their parents crazy so its a safe bet. I'm glad everything looks ok though!

yianna we have an au pair and it is wonderful! She gets the kids up and dressed and to school/care in the morning, leaving that as my free time. Also really came in handy during the newborn phase, I could sleep in with the baby while she tended to the toddler. Now both kids are in school 3 half days a week so that gives us extra hours for her to work nights and weekends. Best of all, costs us a flat rate of $1400 a month total for up to 4 kids. So our childcare costs won’t go up when we have this baby. Of course with anything there are downsides - you have an extra person living in your house (this can also be an upside bc they are more accountable) and especially if you are inexperienced you could get a bad apple. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat.

yianna Leaf 🌱 We are in Ohio and it seems like infants are around $250-300 a week. I was hoping for an in-home daycare since that’s where I went when I was little, but I’m only really comfortable using someone we can get a good rec for from someone we know. We just haven’t been living here for all that long so we don’t know a ton of people. I’m not opposed to a center but they fill up fast! I just talked to one that doesn’t have an opening until next fall.

I booked my spot for the baby's daycare a couple of weeks ago. $450 a week for infant care and it was one of their last available spots for next July. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) H and I never planned on having our kids so far apart, but if there is a tiny single lining to all our TTC troubles it is that we only have to pay for one at a time, since DS will be in 1st grade by then.

We got on the waitlist for our preferred daycare earlier in the pregnancy, like around week 10, I think? It was something we were already thinking of because we had to cancel our waitlist position for the twins, but couldn't muster up the sanity to actually do it. So when Iggy came into the picture, it made it a lot easier to walk in. We just double-checked the status of that last week and we're still waitlisted. They're apparently going to call us if there's an opening sometime next year, closer to our projected start time (July).
It's $255/week for full-time care for them, but they're also with the local school districts, so presumably any paperwork should follow them up to actual school as they continue in care.

calendula as much as I complain about paying it, you do get what you pay for, so that's really what matters, right? Great care for your kiddos.

calendula as much as I complain about paying it, you do get what you pay for, so that's really what matters, right? Great care for your kiddos. Yes and no. And some of the higher end ones are a little out of control in our area. I'm not confident that babies really need certified yoga teachers once weekly. LOL. One center I visited was about 600 a week. At that price, I feel someone ought to be nursing the kid for me.But its true that a good center offers kids a world of benefit, and paying for quality childcare gets you clean, safe facilities and qualified educators. And peace of mind knowing LO is in a good spot. So in that sense, I know that paying market rate for daycare is worth it. Our first daycare for DS was an inhome and it was not a good experience. Not universally true of course but it wasn't someone we personally knew or had a recommendation on, so I should have known from the get-go. We are fortunate to be able to pay for a good center and not think twice about it.

Re: finding good inhome care Word of mouth and personal recs are key. I’m also lucky that my IRL BFF and another family friend needed care all at the same time so our girls are together. We have three families all constantly talking and watching out for anything weird. Our current place was recommended by the mom of the only little girl left after a group went to kindergarten. We definitely toured other places that were better and worse, and way more expensive and less.
It’s really hard to juggle cost, convenience, and fit. Knowing i picked the “wrong” place for DD (and paying through the nose for it) made me feel like the worlds worst mom in the world. My first professional coaching session with a senior coworker was just me crying about how horrible dropoffs were and how DD wasn’t happy. It ate me alive. This is not bc centers < inhome, but because ithat specific place didn’t for my *my* kid. It sucks but DC either works out or you can find something new. And i had forgotten about the latter bc i was convinced that was the safest/best/etc place.
tldr: give yourself some grace when it comes to daycare. It’ll be ok.

DD's daycare which I love was $250/week for a full time infant when she was a baby. It's gone up a little and is $265/week for an infant. We are still paying $265 a week for her because we also pay for a music and phonics class. So if both were in full time care we would be paying around $530 a week. 😮
That's part of the reason I'm going to SAH now. We are still going to keep DD in part time going 3 days a week which will save us some on her tuition but I want her to go since she seems to be learning a lot and so I don't have to keep her busy while dealing with newborn sleep deprivation.

My grandma actually watches my DD now, but has made mention that she's not up to caring for 2 littles. We will probably end up putting DD (3 next June) in a preschool and having my grandma take care of the baby. I'm not sure if we'll do a daycare type preschool where she's there all day, or if my grandma would be willing to take her to a 1/2 day preschool in the morning and bring her home for naps/some play time until we get off of work....I'm currently keeping my head in the sand about the situation🙈

I can't even think of daycare yet. The idea of paying for another kid in child care makes me want to vomit. And ours is cheap now - but I don't love, love it. My old provider was amazing and I loved her. I'm secretly hoping she'll quit her job and decide to look after both of my kids. Fingers crossed! (lolsob)
