Passed his hearing test (which they did in our room which was cool to see). His blood sugar is doing well and we are almost done with the 24 hours of pricking his foot before feeding! We are using a nipple shield and or self expressing to make sure he's getting enough. As long as he is awake enough, he's doing well with the nipple shield!
The pediatricians think his GA was off and that he's older than 36w 5d when born due to color, response, size, etc etc. He continues to be a sweet baby who doesn't always even cry when he gets his heel pricked.
DS1 (so weird) stopped by with my mom. He wasn't very interested in DS2 but did want snuggles with me. He lasted for 20 min before attempting to destroy my hospital room and left in my mom's arms yelling "my mommy! My mommy!" So that's gonna be fun.
Poof pic.

Aww, poor DS1. He will adjust and they will be great friends and co-conspirators soon, I'm sure!

grumpycatWhy are they poking him before feeds? It doesn't make sense to me.

They're checking blood sugars if they're poking him pre-feed. I was just curious because we only poke babies if they are small or large for gestational age or if they exhibit signs of low blood sugar.

Because he was born before 37 weeks ... its annoying but he is eating well. He's struggling a little bit to regulate his blood sugar.

I guess "preemie" makes sense, especially if he's not keeping his sugars above baseline.

I didn't see your response before I posted lol. He's had a few lowish readings but nothing really low. It's the only premie type of thing he's got going on so I'm counting my blessings he's breastfeeding dramatically better than my first did and producing wet/poopy diapers so we are definitely heading in the right direction!

Yeah, this was one of the extra tests E had to pass for being born one day shy of 37w.

We got his blood sugar up with a little bit of formula last night. I'm still breastfeeding and my milk is starting to come in. He's doing the car seat test now and we are hopeful to get out of here today! I'm cleared to go and cannot wait. Low risk for jaundice and he's weighing in at 6 lb 11oz (4% loss). Mmmm breakfast just got here.

A little late with this but CONGRATULATIONS!!! Seems like we had similar preemie experiences. They also checked her blood sugars before feeds, not after at my hospital. I think the feeds might give them false high readings?

In reviewing this lol, I just wanted to add that DS2 did turn from sunny side up to face down. I felt an excruciating pain and kind of a pop (legit was like OMG WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?!) then I went into active labor/delivered in 20 minutes.
The yoga ball and rocking my hips helped move him into position, so thank you to who gave me that suggestion!

I think the feeds might give them false high readings? They do them prefeeds to ensure that baby is able to regulate its metabolism and respond to its own hunger cues. You're right in that if they took them post feed they'd be higher. Same reason diabetics take their sugars before meals.
