PSA: Its free cone day at Dairy Queen!
Of course it’s in the 30s here but we’ll be going after school to get our free cones because why not.

We aren't going anywhere for spring break 😕 My family is visiting though so that will entertain us Other than going to Cancun once in college, spring break is not a travel week ever for us. My spring breaks in college were road trips with my mother to visit my retired aunts/uncles that wintered in Arkansas. Looking back, I treasure those trips - driving through the countryside with my mom, listening to Patsy Cline & Elvis, seeing cheesy shows in Branson, touring Graceland, having her tell me to put on some lipstick so I'd look older and act like I knew what I was doing when sneaking into the 21+ casinos in Tunica to play nickel slots. But at the time, I'll admit I was a bit jealous of my friends that were going to Florida or Mexico while I was stuck in a dry county reading back copies of the National Enquirer.

Wow I am feeling really bitchy today. I'm just looking for a fight. I don't know if it's hormones and my period. Or I've reached my max stress level and I'm losing it. Even eating a snickers won't help. You can simulate your fight with us here! Unless you mean you're looking for a fight here, in which case... go for it.

We're leaning into vacation week camp for spring break for the first time. We still have a 4 day weekend (why do they always start breaks on Friday??) so we'll make a trip to visit my sister and then I'm throwing money at camp.

This is the third or fourth year we are spending spring break at my aunt's (used to be my grandparents') cabin in the mountains about 4 hours away. It's a nice break but it is not really my preferred time of year to visit, and we usually only get to visit once a year or so- we just take advantage of the spring break time. So I know I complained a few days ago about our district doing away with spring break but I'm really not too mad- next year we can choose a more advantageous time to go away.
All of that to say I would really rather go to the beach but that isn't in the cards.

I miss the days when I could take advantage of cheaper air/hotels and just pull the kids out of school for a vacation at an off time. Now that the oldest are in high school with block scheduling, they worry they'll get too far behind if they miss more than a day. And DH's schedule is too busy in the summer so if we go anywhere June-August we'll be going without him - which, isn't the worst thing as I left him home for last year's spring break road trip and it didn't exactly suck.
Normally we wouldn't do two trips a year, but every time I get an email about AP credits or potential colleges, I want to gather my babies and make time slow down.

I'm mad at our school too. It's always been a very progressive public school and I'm trying to decide if and how I want to respond. The "new" yearbook teacher changed the superlatives this year to include "best looking". WTF? Why are we making that a thing? This isn't the 80s! I saw the ballots when they came out a few months ago and they made some changes, not sure why. The rest are the usual:most like to..., best smile, most dependable, funniest etc. WWYD?

Since the yearbooks are likely already at the printers this year I would send an email to the principal/yearbook teacher after they come out expressing disappointment with that specific choice of superlative and your reasoning for objecting. How strongly I worded the email would depend on how many years my kids have left at the school. If it’s the last child/last year I would be blunt. If I have a few more years to go I would focus on hope that such superlative’s aren’t included in future years and provide a list of body positive/inclusion conscious superlatives for consideration next year.

You can simulate your fight with us here! Unless you mean you're looking for a fight here, in which case... go for it. yeah, I want to start shit with the school, but I'm waiting for the HS principal to respond. Basically the school play this weekend, the Addams Family, made a derogatory "joke" in one scene spoiler grandma Addams says, "That's Peyote, it makes people run naked in the woods" which I know to be a plant that is used in Indigenous Tribes ceremonies, and is part of religious sacraments in the Native American Church. I could be wrong, and taking the "joke" the wrong way, but I find it insulting. When I emailed the director asking for an explanation and if they could turn this into an educational moment, he gave me contact info for the playwright, which I did message. I don't really expect a response from the playwright. I then asked the director again how he will address this insult and if there would be any effort made to educate the students or apologize to the community. I then copied the principal. Really I was quite shocked. This is my alma mater and so much more open and progressive than the kids' old school. Hell the principal was my old VP, and many of my old teachers are still here. They taught me well, so again surprised this happened. I don’t think your wrong on this but just a note on why the director sent you to the playwright - if the school paid to license the play (which I can’t imagine them not doing), they cannot make any changes at all without written permission from the rights holders. It’s a tricky situation that makes it hard to stage a lot of beloved plays and musicals. The “classics” almost all have some line or reference that isn’t viewed as acceptable in our current society. There are ways to handle it - a disclaimer, addressing it before the play starts in the directors speech, etc. But they may be struggling for how to do that and honor the contract they signed.

Also in speaking with them, you can ask them to review scripts and ask for approval from the licensing/copyright people to make changes. But they have to plan for that and they might not get approved.

You can simulate your fight with us here! Unless you mean you're looking for a fight here, in which case... go for it. I do not really see how that line as you posted it would warrant an apology to the indigenous community. Peyote is a cactus that grew widespread across the southern US that is a fact. It is a known hallucinogen that is a fact. It was used by many different groups and not just the Native American indigenous. I know the Spanish colonizers, Mexican indigenous groups. It was once thought to be used to give to enslaved people. It is now known as a Native American thing due to peyote being banned across the US. It is only protected under the religious freedom act for members of the Native American Church. To me derogatory would be disrespecting the NA by saying something demeaning, unkind, or unflattering. If the line said something about the people who use it that would be derogatory to me. That doesn't mean I am all correct on my take on this. I just don't see that line disrespecting a whole group of people. Just my opinion.

This one is a first, it's just so shallow and stands out from the rest of the superlatives. They're in 8th grade so ya know.

I would never contact them for this. But I definitely will tuck it in my hat until next year.

It still doesn't sit well with me. Native Americans are not taking Peyote to run around naked in the woods. Feels like they don't want to touch this because it is related to drugs, or to religion, or both. Like a don't ask, don't tell, sweep it under the rug. But maybe they still can't talk about it. I already spoke to my kids about it. Maybe I just have to let this go. But I'll think twice before going to another performance, which sucks because I enjoy supporting the students and their arts. I really don’t know. I’ve never actually seen the copyright agreements that gets signed between the two parties. I only recently even learned of this - new theater mom alert! Everything I’ve read on the subject makes it sound like it’s all best to handle early on in the production cycle - request changes and deal with how to address any concerns the community may have if changes are not approved or made. I guess if they are caught, it can impact their ability to license work in the future but I don’t have enough experience to know if that’s a likely scenario or hypothetical. And obviously I don’t suggest running afoul of copyright laws, but I’m sure some small productions do play the odds on that. In terms of what they do now, I think you can suggest they address it but I don’t know if they will. But they certainly won’t if no one brings it up, you know? So I would speak on it if you feel compelled to. You could influence more cultural sensitivity in future productions.

I just put out some porch decorations for Easter, so of course now there's snow in the forecast.
It's been a mild winter, but I need it to be done. Quit saying goodbye then popping back in over and over like that annoying relative that doesn't know how to just leave a party.

We'll have several warm days and the one day I leave the house without a hat it's cold and windy AF again.

I'm trying to pack for Colorado next week and the forecasted high has ranged from 35-70 depending on which day I looked at it. There's a difference between packing layers for cooler temps and needing to bring winter coats (which I'm thinking we'll need to do).

So I would speak on it if you feel compelled to. You could influence more cultural sensitivity in future productions. I’ve been a pit orchestra musician for 15+ years so here’s my take on it. It takes months for a high school or theater to get copyright approval to do a show and that comes along with a significant cost. Any changes to the script need to be requested pretty much ASAP once they receive it but it’s also a lengthy process. If the school/theater diverts away from the script too much, then they can get fined for copyright infringement and not be able to get the copyright for future shows. For shows with heavy topics such as the holocaust (Cabaret) or other shows with adult themes, there is an announcement that can be made at the beginning of the show that warns the audience of adult themes, not suitable for children etc. That is more for community theater vs. school age but it can be said. In your case, I would definitely bring it up, but if you are the only voice of concern it is unlikely that they will come out with a statement, especially if the show is already over. In some cases, the director might of not even been aware this was offensive but it will give them the opportunity to hopefully be more insightful for future performances. I’ve done this show twice (the last time being this fall) and wasn’t aware that the particular line could be offensive so this is a learning experience for me as well.

We have hosted Easter the last 8 years as the one holiday where we bring my family and H’s family together. SIL has usurped us this year and is now making a big deal about not having enough room for my family, despite previously telling MH it was fine. Im annoyed and wish we didn’t have to go now.

Oh I'd be annoyed. How did she manage to call dibs on hosting ?? She sent a random group text to everyone announcing that she was hosting this year, maybe 6 weeks ago or so. H called her after receiving that to remind her that we usually host with both families, so could we invite my parents and brother/his wife, and she said yes. Last night, her husband texted MH being ugly about my family being invited without him supposedly knowing about it, and SIL called FIL to complain about my 2-4 family members being too much for their guest list and not what she wanted for her event.
