I'm sure it's coincidence that this decision dropped on a Friday that happens to be December 22. 'The Supreme Court declined on Friday to decide for now whether former President Donald J. Trump is immune from prosecution on charges of plotting to overturn the 2020 election. The decision to defer consideration of a central issue in the case was a major practical victory for Mr. Trump, whose lawyers have consistently sought to delay criminal cases against him around the country. The case will now move forward in an appeals court, which has put it on a fast track, and most likely return to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks or months. The order issued Friday was one sentence and gave no reasons, which is typical when the justices deny review. There were no noted dissents.' Supreme Court Won’t Hear Case on Trump’s Immunity Defense for Now www.nytimes.com/2023/12/22/us/politics/trump-supreme-court-immunity.html?smid=nytcore-android-share

The Wisconsin Supreme Court said on Friday that the state’s heavily gerrymandered legislative maps that favor Republicans were unconstitutional and ordered new maps before the 2024 election. The ruling has the potential to produce a seismic political shift in a crucial presidential swing state. Justice Jill J. Karofsky, writing for the majority, said that Wisconsin’s current maps violate a requirement in the State Constitution “that Wisconsin’s state legislative districts must be composed of physically adjoining territory.” “Given the language in the Constitution, the question before us is straightforward,” she wrote. “When legislative districts are composed of separate, detached parts, do they consist of ‘contiguous territory’? We conclude that they do not.” Justices in Wisconsin Order New Legislative Maps www.nytimes.com/2023/12/22/us/wisconsin-redistricting-maps-gerrymander.html?smid=nytcore-android-share

I'm binging the podcast contempt of court by Elie mystal while I prep food and I can't recommend it enough. I appreciate his ability to make sound arguments that are easy to follow for how we should talk about court reform.

Waste of time and effort. Surprising nobody. thehill.com/business/4374517-graham-declares-war-against-ny-bill-chickfila-sundays/Basically the NYS thruway is in the process of building new rest stops. They've put Chick-fil-A in a bunch of them, but they're not open on Sundays, which is obviously a massive travel day and therefore a massive waste of space and a point of massive inconvenience for travelers. Hochul is passing a bill making it so the rest stop Chick-fil-As have to be open on Sundays, because oh my God, fucking duh. And Lindsey Graham has decided this is the hill he wants to die on. Please die then, sir! I mean, they never should have let Chick-fil-A get the bid to be in all these stops without requiring them to be open on Sundays to begin with, but what do I know.

Eh, I think if they want to stay closed for religious reasons on Sundays, that's their right and you cannot make them do otherwise. However, obviously restaurants at rest stops need to be open on Sundays, so being open 7 days / week should have been one of the requirements for getting these contracts.

That's why I think they shouldn't have gotten the bid to be in the rest stops without that stipulation. Chick-fil-A can otherwise do whatever they. I don't care that they're closed on Sunday. But I do understand the absolute frustration of wanting food and your only option for 120 miles or more being closed. The rest stops are every 50-60 miles and more than half have a Chick-fil-A in them. We drive the thruway regularly, but whenever we do we pack snacks for the kids and make sure no one's hungry before we go. Rest stops are bathroom breaks only for us if we can help it. That said, my biggest issue is just Lindsey Graham thinking this is some battle he needs to fight. As if he doesn't have more important things to focus on in his own state.

To me this is NYs fuck up and theirs to fix without forcing CFA to change their policy. I hate CFA on principle (I have never eaten there so can’t speak to the food) and fuck Lindsey Graham. But this seems to be a bed that NY made for themselves.

Not to sound tinhatty but, is it possible CFA bid on this contract assuming it wouod he challenged and the ultra conservative SCOTUS wouod, in one fell swoop, shield them from lawauits nationwide? I am not saying they don't have the right to set their own hours. It just seems weird that CFA, being one of like....one?....national chain fast food that isn't open 7 days/week won this contract. Especially considering their only New York locations (per their website) are in the City. Now they are goinfmg to be a major statewide player? Seems weird.

I mean this right here from the AP article cnf shared:
'Restaurants that are operating now wouldn’t be affected by the bill, according to the AP. Instead, every contract for food concessions in the future at transportation facilities owned by New York state and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey would be affected by the legislation.'
That feel to me like a business wanting to expand into less politically friendly areas without having to fight to stay closed on Sundays in multiple jurisdictions. (Ftr, I give zero fucks about when CFA is or isn't open, they can set their own hours like any other business, but NYS should be exercising common sense in how it tteats travelers coming to or through the state, and this seems kinda hinky from CFA

I didn't even think of that. The other half of the rest stop all appear to have Shake Shack in them, which we do not have here in upstate NY, so 🤷🏻♀️ Their website is very inaccurate, there are plenty of them upstate. We have multiple here in Rochester and I know there's quite a few in Syracuse as well.
