I'm sorry doublestuf , it's just all too much. When will enough be enough? My 6th grader had a lockdown drill last week and the principal sent a message out about preparing the students for it and when I got to the sentence about how the students should "prepare to evade or engage" it took my breath away. After the drill we were talking about it and she said that even though she knew they had a drill, when the announcement came on that it wasn't a drill, she said she about "shit her pants" (she did ask for permission to curse, lol) and talked about how she would fight back, and it took all my willpower to not just cry.

I'm sorry. My kid missed last year's drill because she was out sick. It's awful to think of our children carrying the trauma for having to rehearse for these horrible events. This year her classroom is away from the rest of the school (it's the former music room, I guess they ran out of space? In any case I really hate that my first thought was that her class would be.much harder to find in the event of a shooting. How fucked up is it that that's where my brain first went.

I don't think Trump would pick Vivek as a running mate. He could potentially upstage him and Trump would not like that. There is a reason Trump chose a milquetoast Pence to be his running mate last time. A+ usage of the word milquetoast! Haven't seen that one in a while.

I have a lot of very big, very loud, very anti active shooter drills thoughts.
The drills make me angry because fuck that being my job and our kids safety and security on the line.
When my kid's school had that emergency evacuation last year, it was absolutely terrifying. That robocall coming in about an active threat and evacuation, having to bolt out of work to go find them was a nightmare. Having to park a block away because there was a police barricade around the building, bomb dogs sweeping the premises, it's awful, and we are extremely fortunate that it ended up being nothing. But my kids were scared and had a hard time understanding.
My school swapped out all the door handles on classroom doors last year so we can lock them from the inside, so we don't have to poke our heads into the hallway and mess around with keys. They also swapped out gym and cafeteria doors so they have no handles on the outside and are always locked. All intended as active shooter safety measures.
I just, I can't with any of it. The anger I feel over the whole thing. The fact that our kids are forced into this because fucking GOP ranks gun ownership as a higher priority to protect than the lives of children just makes my blood boil.

TN legislature has their asses out again…they silenced Justin Jones during a debate about police in schools because he said they didn’t belong there and was thus “not on topic.”

I know the conversation about libraries becoming discipline centers has already been brought up. Here's more on that, brought to you by the teachers being forced to comply. Direct link because tapa upload is sucky http://instagram.com/p/CwfeAyGuhIl

How are those students supposed to improve?

A group of local parents created a non-profit in 2018 to install Anchorman door locks in all the schools because the schools wouldn't (couldn't?). They also bought keys for the first responder agencies so they would be equipped if necessary. It cost about $130k and took 18 months. A local fencing company "donated" the installation labor Their "next phase" is to purchase 3M safety and security film for windows and "stop the bleed" bags. It's great but also devastating at the same time

At National Night Out I made the remark to a reporter about lockdown drills don’t work and we’re traumatizing an entire generation of children. That’s how my state lead for besmart ended up on a local news station story about the pd doing drills with more air time than the cops. It’s infuriating that we’re putting our kids through this instead of getting rid of the fucking guns.

It's great but also devastating at the same time Christ. Apparently some schools provide a 5 gallon bucket to every classroom too. The idea is that if you're locked down for extended amounts of time you have somewhere to pee, in front of your entire class. Stop the bleed bags. Oh my gosh. Are they even training the kids how to use them? Why should children be on the hook for saving their fellow classmates life? The priorities are so fucked.

After I bought them and she fell in love with them, I read how light up shoes could be a problem during a lockdown. I’m still trying to figure out how to tell them to bloody themselves and play dead without scarring them

This is gut wrenching and heartbreaking. I wish this would make a difference to those who can do something about it. I hate that it won't.

I know the path shifted a bit so I really hope people were able to evacuate in time.

elle the storm surge is scary. My ILs evacuated and stand the chance to lose their home (they live in a campground year round) because of the surge. Of course we found this out on fb so that’s always nice.
