Virginians - I got an email (I believe because of my role with the PTA) that CNN/Jack Tapper will be moderating a live Town Hall focused on education with Youngkin on March 9th in DC. According to the email, Youngkin will take questions from the audience to hear directly from parents, teachers, students and stakeholders about education and the issues that matter the most to families in VA and across the nation. Can't wait to see how this goes. I was given the option to submit any questions and potentially be selected to attend and ask my questions in person. However, history seems to indicate he doesn't like to answer my questions. I was just reading the state education superintendent resigned

I’m reading a book written about a local holocaust survivor’s story. I went and saw him in person last month and getting through his story is so hard. It should be required to read this sort of stuff. And not just in HS history. As an adult. As a parent. The dehumanization is just startling. And early in the book to hear how 1930s Germans would swoon over Hitler really made me feel like there is a scary parallel with the GOP right now. I hope it isn’t insensitive with that comparison but I feel uneasy about how for crazy Tr.umpers, he is an idol. They liked him to God and put him on flags. Some would have killed sitting representatives on 1/6 if given the chance. It’s a slow boil sort of thing, and some of the outrageous stuff in the last 7 years should have been a hard stop and they weren’t.
Also reading this book has made sleeping more difficult. But that is what terrible history should do.

'Former president Donald Trump can be held liable in court for the actions of the mob that overtook the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, the Justice Department said Thursday. “Speaking to the public on matters of public concern is a traditional function of the Presidency, and the outer perimeter of the President’s Office includes a vast realm of such speech,” attorneys for the Justice Department’s Civil Division wrote. “But that traditional function is one of public communication. It does not include incitement of imminent private violence.” Two officers with the U.S. Capitol Police, joined by 11 Democratic House members, are seeking to hold Trump liable for physical and psychological injuries they suffered during the riot. Trump has argued he is protected from the lawsuit by the absolute immunity conferred on a president performing his official duties.' Trump can be sued by police over Jan. 6 riot, Justice Department says www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/03/02/trump-jan6-lawsuit-riot/

Anyone have any great resources on if metal detectors in schools actual prevent incidents?
Our school system is looking to install metal detectors starting at the middle and high schools and expanding to ES. I recently used a similar walk through system at the Smithsonian- a very different, unobtrusive experience than what I would normally think of when conjuring a metal detector- and I might be coming around on them. Students would walk through at regular flow of traffic and backpacks would not be removed or screened separately.

Y'all I miss Wegmans so much since I moved. And Shake Shack. I'm coming back to visit in May, we should have a gtg PA has Wegmans? I would be so sad to lose my Wegmans access. I live in the Wegmans motherland. I can't turn 90 degrees without smacking into one.

I don't have any real data for you, but anecdotally I've taught in schools that have them and use them. One of those schools had a stabbing a few years ago and another had a loaded gun found on a student just a couple of weeks ago.

Mostly they give people a false sense of security. They're expensive to install and maintain, you need to train staff, and unless they're manned 100% of the time what's the point? ETA: there are also some mental health considerations

I know at least at the high school there are security personnel at every door while the building is accessible, so I think they would be manned. We have over 4000 kids at our high school (10-12). It has its own security fleet.

I know at least at the high school there are security personnel at every door while the building is accessible, so I think they would be manned. We have over 4000 kids at our high school (10-12). It has its own security fleet. We struggle with having enough funding so it definitely wouldn't work here, I'm also in a decent sized district. When after school activities are going on there is very little staff beyond whoever is supervising the activity. All doors are not supervised even when students are entering/exiting at the start and end of the day. There are also a lot of upperclassman taking college classes at local colleges that come and go from campus during the school day. When there are sporting events, concerts, etc, limited doors are unlocked but there is minimal to no supervision. That kind of stuff is all a consideration for effectiveness Last year there were 2 incidents here with pellet guns. One was found on school property in the "land lab" while a teacher was out there with a class and the other "fell out of a backpack" and the teacher in the classroom tackled the student. Allegedly it was an accident. People were clamoring for metal detectors afterwards. I'm not sure this is what I read before, but this is a study I found when looking: files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED595716.pdf

There's typically a tough choice between high levels of security and privacy (4th Amendment) concerns.

I live in the Wegmans motherland. I can't turn 90 degrees without smacking into one. We lived a half mile away from Wegmans for a long time in Virginia and did basically all of our shopping there. And yes, there are several in PA but not in Pittsburgh sad face. The closest is two hours away in Erie.
