It's been 10 days since we got back from Disney so I think we are safe to say we somehow made it without any of us catching covid. We did mask in the airports, planes, and indoors at Disney. Also when in really crowded outdoor spaces as well. It's still frustrating to see 99% of the people just going on like normal though.

My friend just had a baby 18 days ago. Her mom got back from India 5 days ago. She’s been throwing up whenever she eats and has an awful headache. Says she’s covid negative but my friend said she doesn’t believe she actually took a test. Mom insists it’s a stomach bug.
GMom is supposed to meet baby on Saturday (9 days from day of flight.) My friend doesn’t know what to do.
I told her make them take a covid test and send you the pic or do it with them via FaceTime? Have them wear a mask regardless.
Thoughts?

I wouldn't see someone (newborn or not) until recovered from whatever that illness is and symptoms free for several days. Norovirus is really bad right now and that'd be scary for a new mom and baby to be exposed to with dehydration. Hope she's better soon and can meet the baby safely.

If she's still having these symptoms now then covid or norovirus would likely still be contagious at that point she wants to visit. Norovirus is usually still contagious a couple of weeks after symptoms resolve. If Gma is only here for a short time to see the baby I would be more willing to compromise but honestly I wouldn't want her to see the baby at this time. Catching a stomach bug at 3 weeks postpartum sounds like an absolute nightmare. I would want another covid test Fri or Sat and proof if she thinks gma can't be trusted. Definitely masked. Handwashing instead of hand sanitizer. Bare minimum. I know I'm more risk adverse than a lot though.

Thanks that’s how I feel but my friend is very much being guilted by her mom and aunts to let them see the baby even though they all returned from India less than a week ago.
I told her hell no even with masks if it were me, but she is easily persuaded by her moms guilt tripping.
I’ll remind her of the dehydration aspect for her / baby and hopefully that will help her say no.

She's probably going to meet them. You know? Its so hard to say no esp if grand is from out if country.
I wouldn't want covid cold flu norovirus I'd tell her to blame it on pediatrician lol.
Otherwise suggest all the Mitigating things you can think of if she does meet with them like its march april 2020 and covid is super scary and people were wearing gloves to ck the mail. Everybody freshly showered clean clothes hand sanitizer. I'd probably try to make them test at the car and hold up negative to come closer but covid is only 1 of many things that would be bad for newborn eh.
meet outside Maybe listerine and saline nose rinse Masks on everybody. N95 I'd double mask No holding baby stay 6 ft away 15 minute meeting. When not actively looking at baby cover baby face with blankie Lysol everything Shower change clothes saline nose rinse and listerine for mom after visit.

I think pointing out the very real health effects for baby is a good way to go. I hope she listens to you.

I was so weak between not being able to eat but still BFing.

It can shed into the feces after the person is better which in turn can get onto surfaces, clothes, etc, and infect someone else. Or so I've read. For up to 2 weeks or something.

I think the fact it can live on those surfaces, clothes, is the real issue. After everyone is better you put away the bleach spray and maybe don't wash hands as long.

I would flat out say no. At least a Covid test via face time. Then they would be masked and wearing gloves. I have OCD but you don't mess with the health of a newborn and their parents. I'd move the visit to next weekend if they don't want to glove and mask.

Yep, it can stay in your stool for a couple of weeks and on surfaces for months supposedly if you don't bleach them. Plus hand sanitizer doesn't work on it. It really is a nasty bug. It's probably less contagious at those points I would imagine than when you have an active infection though. But it's a very tough virus to kill.

It's actually funny now, 10 years later, because of how dramatically it took the entire house down and the baby just chilled in his swing

addymac, remember that time I had noro at 39w3 and then again two days postpartum? And then we all got covid when the baby was five weeks old? The noro was worse. Dear Lord.

We went to Disney with 14 people and so far 5 have come back with COVID. TBD on the rest. 4 out of the 5 have never had it so go figure.

I hope everyone feels better quickly. With us, it started with just me and MIL within 24 hours of getting home, but spread once we were at our homes home over the course of 8 days. We were all COVID newbies. Only my BIL and niece avoided it.
