OMG Elton's reaction has me in tears. I absolutely love him. I was supposed to see his show tonight but the person I was going with has Covid 😞 Although I've seen him twice before. I would have politely asked for the tickets 😉

I love our library. This is from of their fb post this week: This week we celebrate Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week, which takes place from September 18-24, shines a light on censorship and the freedom to read. This year, along with a book display featuring titles from American Library Association's top 10 banned books from 2021, the library has an interactive display. We challenge YOU to free the titles from "banned books jail." Match up the titles with the reason they were banned or challenged, and add your name or photo to the wall of fame! Titles featured in the banned books display: - Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews - The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas - The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood - Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel - Modern Love by Aziz Ansari - Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry - Beyond Magenta: Transgender Teens Speak Out by Susan Kuklin - The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo - Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison #BannedBooksWeek2022 Wait. Why tf is Hair Love banned? It’s literally about a dad doing his daughter’s hair. That’s it. That’s the plot. And both characters are Black. I just found out the IAm Every Good Thing is also banned. It’s a book about a boy who recites good things about himself and why he is worthy to be loved. That’s it. That’s the plot. Oh and he’s Black. These two books being banned at a school in Texas are sending me over the edge. Apparently little Black children seeing themselves in a positive light is controversial? I think I need to go burn shit down.

fatpony, can you tell me why Where the Wild Things Are or Charlotte’s Web are banned in some places? Where the Wild Things Are - This book was banned because of its dark and disturbing nature, but also because Max being sent to bed without dinner was seen as abuse. Charlotte's Web - religious grounds. "Talking animals are blasphemous and unnatural” and passages about the spider dying were also criticized as being “inappropriate subject matter for a children’s book.”

It’s not like Charlotte Web is nonfiction

Talking animals are blasphemous? Huh. Right? Like, are they also arguing Narnia is blasphemous? Because it's essential the Biblical story of creation and the New Testament told with talking animals...

The no talking animals thing seems like it rule out like…70% of kids fiction? I’m thinking about my kids shelf and it’s mostly talking animals. And talking dragons which must be worse.

But I know Catholics are a bit different than Evangelicals

I think I need to go burn shit down. I had this same reaction when I saw Max and the Tag-along Moon was banned. It's a simple story about a little boy who watches the moon follow his car home from Grandpa's house. Banned because the characters are Black. It makes me so mad.

My first introduction to Narnia was checking it out from the church library! But I know Catholics are a bit different than Evangelicals In seventh grade, we read Harry Potter as a class in my Catholic school. I had a friend in high school who wasn’t allowed at my house because I had Harry Potter paraphernalia (besides the books, I had a wall calendar). I remember my mom tried to talk with the other parent (she was our churches youth program director) and afterward told me, sorry babe, she’s not open to reason.

If you haven't been following what's happening, the moms4liberty group is a real threat. Is the group running workshops on how to crack into teacher's social media and get them fired?

Locally it’s ‘concerned citizens of’ And 99.9% of elected officials current and former WS is gaining a LOT of traction here

My gosh in high school her mom was still in charge of decisions like that? Yikes
