Worst thread ever. Like an episode of HGTV. This is my UO. I will agree that it's a UO. We have done way worse than this. You are right. We have.
It was all the my house anecdotes. Like I am not going to remember that you live in a ranch and where your bedrooms are.

I understand the convenience living in a ranch, but I feel much safer having bedrooms on a higher floor. Even while traveling I request a room on a floor other than ground level. I'm team colonial for lyfe! I've also steered clear of second floor laundry for the fear of water damage - I'm happy to take laundry up & down steps to eliminate that risk. I'm the exact opposite because if I needed to, I could jump out of any window in my house and make a quick escape. If you are on the second floor, you have to use one of those fire ladders or you are confined to escaping through the staircase, an easily blocked route. When we stay at my ILs beach house, I worry about my kid getting out of bed and just walking out the door. I mean, he's never done anything like that but with all the pools, my anxiety is always up. I prefer being able to gate the top of the steps at our house. I do agree I can jump out a ranch's window easier than a second story window in case of a fire though.

@headinsand I used to be that way. Still am with hotels but for living I think in many ways 1 story is safer. Like HE said it's easier to go out a window. Our current house is 2 story and I worry about how the kids would get out in a fire if I couldn't get to them.
If someone is going to break into your home while you are there- I doubt upstairs/downstairs will be the deciding factor in whether they enter your bedroom

You may not do this. Make a thread. Did not know this was a rule. I love how you turned it into an opinion. crafty!

It's my H's dream to have a house with stairs. I'm indifferent.
I'm anti old farm house because I feel like they'd require a lot of upkeep that I would have to hire out.

Also, I love the MCM split levels. Because of the real estate situation here, there were a ton of them in disrepair and then their geographical location became popular again and all of the sudden they are being bought up and refurbished and they are phenomenal. If I could have found a suitable one when we were house searching, I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

I never thought I liked ranch houses, but then some family friends bought an amazing sprawling ranch and I am in love with it. It completely changed my mind and now I think my dream home might be something like that. They also have the basement that goes the whole length of the house too and I just love everything about it.

I don't see the need for a 10,000 sq ft house.
I guess it's more of a want, right?

i know it's super practical with having kids, etc. but i am just not a fan of open floor plans. guessing this is an uo based on hgtv shows It's not even super practical with kids. My living area is all open concept and it was a pain in the ass to baby proof. I didn't find it harder than our old place, but the open floor plan is great for toddlers running around.

I don't see the point in taking a bunch of pictures/videos when you are at a concert then plastering them all over social media. They are so pointless. I am glad you went and enjoyed the concert but wtf is the point in posting a million shitty pics on social media? Brought to you by what seems to be everyone on my FB feed who went to the P!nk concert in AC last night. I hate being behind the person who is viewing the concert through their phone screen too because of how many videos and photos they take. So distracting. I know I'm like a thousand years old but it makes me grumpy.

My husband will not even consider a house under 2200 sq ft. I am so baffled by this. Like it's causing a giant fight because we need to "think of the future." He is also solidly OAD. I don't understand. Why does a family of 3 need 2700 sq ft?!?!?

I am more comfortable knowing my bedroom would not likely be the point of entry for an intruder. Part of the reason I was able to get away was because I heard him approaching & wasn't in the bedroom at the time. Obviously it's not the most rational thought, hence my UO.

I have spent more hours than I should admit fretting about how I would get STD out a second story window in case of a fire. I don't yet have a great solution. This is how my crock pot fear started. My condo was on the third level and I didn't like to think about my dog in there in case of a fire.

We have escape ladders But I'd worry about DS climbing down safely. Not so much now but when he was younger we're also moving to a 1 story in 2 days

Perhaps this is more of a confession but it's also house porn and a UO with ThisBitch but I have dreams of a stunning staircase going both upstairs and downstairs. Sort of like this picture. My house that I live in now (and will live in for the very long foreseeable future) won't ever support this kind of feature... but I love it. The second picture is the staircase that all murder shows have. But it's very nice. Murder shows and also Billy Madison.

All of you also need to do regular fire drills and establish a meeting place outside for everyone to go to.

I'm vaguely tempted to ask how one knows it was an attempted rapist but... I shan't. Let's move on. He must've broken open the window with his dick.

I also don't think super old homes are all that they're cracked up to be. 100+ year old homes are charming but when you're house hunting and trying to determine if central air is even a possibility, or how you will get off 100 years worth of layers of paint, or how you count a 2 foot nook with a door as a closet, you start to yearn for more updated layouts. plus all the maintenance nightmares. I know they are super popular in your area but I agree with you that I would definitely forgo the "charm" of an ancient house for more modern things. Agreed. And they're not super popular, it's just basically all we have since the area around NYC has been built up since the beginning of time. People talk about my house being so new and it was built in the 60's. Options are limited. Unless you're "2 staircase rich", then you make it rain up in this bitch.

rvasc let me talk to your H. We bought 2500 sq ft because we knew we'd be growing our family. Now we're going down to 1500. Clearing out the house it was pretty clear all the extra room for us just means collecting more junk
