orangehibiscus welcome! I’m sorry you have to be in this club with us! I was diagnosed around 30 weeks and I’ll be 34 tomorrow. I can’t imagine doing this almost the entire pregnancy! You guys are amazing! I’ve been diet controlled thus far and my day numbers are awesome but ugh the fasting number! I’ve been going over by a few points every single day this week. I have an appointment tomorrow so I’ll see if I’ll be doing medicine or if they’ll give me another week to try to get it back in range. It’s really frustrating and there’s so much out of your control!

Welcome orangehibiscus! I was diagnosed at 12 weeks with this one and my last so I feel you on the duration. It's long but worth it. ❤️ Glad you had some good numbers today! I know it can be discouraging but try to remember only so much is in your control, your body is doing it's own thing during pregnancy and they'll help you find the right dosage where your body falls into line. Thanks! Yes, I feel like I’ve been sticking myself with needles/lancets forever. It is so worth it though! I used the same amount of insulin last night as I have been, and my fasting sugar was 108 😢. Thank you! It does get discouraging.

It is super frustrating!

I had my 34 week appointment this morning. My fasting is supposed to be below 95 and I’ve been getting 96, 97, 98. I was really hoping they would let me keep trying to work on it but they put me on medicine at night. This means I’m now high risk and I have to go twice a week starting next week and they’ll want to induce me at 39 weeks. I’m really upset. I feel like this is so much intervention for just a few points over. What do you guys think? I know some places want you under 90 though so maybe it isn’t.

hrh thank you! I think part of the reason why was because I told her I really had tried everything. I took my first dose last night and this morning my fasting was 81. As disappointed as I am it was a relief to get a good number and hopefully I can stop stressing myself so much in the evenings trying to time my snacks and do different things to get it right! That’s a good point about the extra monitoring. If the placenta and baby look good I’ll definitely advocate for more time. You’re right that it’ll help me make an informed decision. Hugs back! Thanks for always being such a good voice of reason for me!

Hugs strawberrykiki. It’s a lot to take in. I’m glad you had a good number this morning though. My OB wants my fasting sugars under 90, and it has only happened a few times since I’ve been monitoring my sugars. Just out of curiosity, what do you eat for a bedtime snack and how much medicine are you on? I’m up to 40 units NPH at bedtime plus Metformin 1000mg at bedtime. I had 2 good numbers at 38 units, but then they went higher again. I’ve done 40 units the last 2 nights, and my fasting sugars have been 113 both days.

I'm on 30 units of Levemir at bedtime. I also do 2 fiber capsules with dinner which I swear makes a huge difference. Prior to meds, my fastings were 110-115. Now they are 85-90. My goal is less than 95. For snacks at night I usually do 2 cups cheddar popcorn, a cup homemade check mix, or wheat toast with PB. I will add cheese or Greek yogurt if I do the first two. Seems to work. I had tried all kinds of combos before meds and nothing seemed to impact my fastings for the good.

tngrl3 orangehibiscus without medicine nothing touched my fasting number either. I tried everything. Protein bars, different kinds of yogurt, cheese, apple with PB... but I was always in the high 90’s. I’m taking 2.5 mg of glyburide with dinner now. I’ve only taken it two days but I’ve gotten an 81 and an 83 so far so it seems to be helping! I was bad today though. Work was so stressful and they ordered pizza and wings for lunch and I had a small piece and then I had a piece of Oreo ice cream pie. I feel guilty now but I’ve been so good since I found out! Back on track going forward!

Anyone else dreaming about the carbs you eat once baby arrives? I'm craving Chinese food but my favs are not at all GD friendly! Also topping my list are french toast, a frozen caramel mocha from my favorite local coffee shop, and grilled cheese on sourdough bread.

I have a full bag of Christmas treats in the freezer for when this is all over. I don’t play around on missing out on food lol.
My numbers are back to sucking, endo upped my insulin on Friday and I’m to email my updated numbers on weds but they still look bad so I’m guessing he’s going to add in the insulin I take with meals. I’m tired of seeing bad numbers and just don’t care anymore, just fix this, doc! I miss eating fruit without a care. I usually eat a lot of fruit as a snack or side to my meals. Right now the only trustworthy food in my life is popcorn, which always seems to lower my numbers but has the side effect of giving me terrible gas. Can’t win!

Tlex sorry your struggling with your numbers again. I know it sucks to have to increase meds but if you are trying your best that's all you can do. Hopefully some med increases will help. I miss fruit so much. I usually eat a good amount. I can handle like 1 bite these days which is just a tease. I was craving oranges so bad the other day. I keep telling myself it's only a few more weeks but it's still hard.

I’ve been doing well but I blew lunch today and got a 157. I had cheese and crackers, chips and salsa, and a mini pork slider. I knew I shouldn’t have eaten so many carbs together and knowing I did I should definitely have gone for a walk. Ugh. I’m over this!!

Really a 157 isn't too horrible. It's hard to say no to carbs all the time! As long as you get back on track next meal, I say no harm done.

So my OB added Metformin 500mg in the mornings, and I’m doing 40 units of NPH at night. My lowest fasting sugar was this morning at 92. They want my fasting number less than 90, so it’s still out of range. I have to send my numbers in on Fridays. I’m sure they’ll up my morning Metformin. I’m not sure if they will increase my NPH or not.
I’ve had some higher lunch and dinner numbers, although most are still good. I imagine that I will end up in regular insulin after meals in addition to the bedtime insulin.
This baby is so worth it, but I’m getting tired of sticking myself with needles.

orangehibiscus I'm sorry it's still a struggle. <3 Your fasting is super close, 90 is the conservative range so take some comfort in that! Thank you! That does make me feel better.

Tlex that’s so true. I keep thinking how much easier it would be to deal with the end of being pregnant if I didn’t have to worry about diabetes

A lot. le sigh! BUT it’s really nice that the diet controls the weight gain at the end, small silver lining.

I had my second NST this morning and baby looks good. I’m taking medicine with dinner to control my fasting number and it’s working. They said they like to induce between 38 and 39 for people on medicine. The doctor today said there is wiggle room because I really want to wait until closer to 40 for work schedule reasons. I’m hoping this is reasonable. I mean if the baby is fine why not?

strawberrykiki I think that is very reasonable. As long as baby is looking good and you are doing okay then there is no reason to delivery before 39/40w. You are being monitored closely so they will know if things change. Advocating for your wishes is important.

strawberrykiki glad baby looked good on NST! You sound very reasonable and like you’re working to be well informed, I hope your doctors are happy to work with you to meet your wishes as best as can be.

I had a not-so-fab NST on Monday, it took 3 hours for them to decide to send me home. Baby was having prolonged bouts of tachycardia which can be related to the mother being in ketosis (which I am, always, it seems). Endo was really frustrating me not getting back to my emails and I was pretty upset. My numbers had started to tank again. Today he upped my N insulin and started me on H with lunch and dinner, I’m hopeful that helps. He said to try and eat more frequently too, so I will do that.
Question for the group, if you do decide to indulge in a treat now and then, when do you find us the best time to do so for your blood sugar? With a meal? Between lunch and dinner?

Tlex I’m sorry things are difficult for you right now. If I have a treat I usually do it right after dinner and then go for a walk. I like skinny cow ice cream or I’ll have a sugar free pudding with cool whip. I walk a mile and a half after dinner pretty much every night and I can get away with just about anything if I walk. I was able to have a grilled cheese one night which was amazing. On my birthday I managed fries and chocolate cake but was okay as I basically walked for the entire hour after I ate it until I tested. 😳 what kind of treats are you in the mood for? Maybe there are some variations that won’t mess up your numbers too badly. Hugs!

strawberrykiki definitely chocolate/desserts/cookies are what I’m really craving, so that pudding with cool whip idea sounds soooo good! Some days are good and I can go on walks some days are really tough (I have SPD) but maybe I can be more cognizant of “hey it’s not just a good walk day, get a treat!” Matching those up isnt something I’d thought to do.

Tlex dark chocolate squares are good too! I can have one of those after dinner even without a walk. Cool whip actually doesn’t have much sugar at all. Sometimes I swirl it with peanut butter and it tastes like a dessert! I joke with my husband some foods require me to pay the diabetes toll meaning I have to go for a walk or get a terrible number. If I’m feeling lazy or uncomfortable I know I have to stick with salad or chicken and veggies with no carbs or treats. 😑 Not sweet but I’ve had really good results with protein pasta if you crave pasta. I had spaghetti and meatballs and it was amazing!

Tlex also I do really well with all the fiber one things. I’ve tried the brownies and their protein bars with really good results. Something about the extra fiber seems to help control my number!
