From the shouting into the void thread NamasteBirches ( I hope I did that tag properly but I don't have much hope) made me wonder what everybody is planning on doing once the littles are old enough to be in school full time? I know I would like to go back to work at some point, but if it weren't for the money aspect of it I would be staying home until my boys are at least in middle school and fairly self sufficient. Even then I would ideally only work part time so I could be available for field trips, sick days and other random stuff.
So what are your long term plans/goals/ ideal situations?

I'm not sure what our plan is yet. DD will be in 1st grade next year, and DS will be in half day pre-k next year. So that gives me about 2 1/2 hours to work, which is pretty pointless. I will be watching my friend's son next year, so that will be a bit of supplemental income.
We are also TTC, so it will be another several years until all of our kids will be in school. So there is a good chance that I'll just be watching an extra child or two to bring in a little extra until I can work full time.
I was a hairstylist for 10 years before I started staying home. I'd love to go back to it, but we moved to a different state 2 years ago, so I'd have to completely build up my clientele :/
I've also considered becoming a teacher's assistant while the kids are still in school. That way I wouldn't have to pay for childcare during the summer.

Honestly I'll probably stay home. I *might* go finish my anatomy and physiology degree but who knows. I have 5 years to decide.

The farther I get away from college the more it starts to appeal to me again. I think I'd like to go back for some classes someday since I definitely didn't end up using my criminal justice degree. ...although some days I think my kids have a lot in common with criminals...really small and adorable criminals.

This is something I ponder often. I feel like my bachelor's degree and previous work experience isn't enough to get me any kind of job I'd want to do. I would kind of like to go back to school for a 2 year degree like sonography, but I'm just not sure.
I get sad thinking about not having Summers off with the kids and not being there when theyre done with school. My mom was a SAHM all through my childhood so it's all I know and it's hard to imagine anything else. At the same time I feel like I like the idea of going back to work. I'm just clearly undecided and it's a good thing my youngest is only 8 months so I have some time.

I was considering this now that the 5 year old is starting kindergarten and the 4 year old preschool in the Fall (first time both will be in school at same time, 5 year old also did one year of prek this past year). But BAM guess what? Now I'm preggo again, surprise! Haha.

I'm lucky that we live in a small town and my husband has a lot of connections.
DD and DS start preschool in the fall, just two full days a week. I have an accounting degree so I'm going to either work those days at one of the local accounting firms, help in my husband's office doing title searches or other tasks, or help out somewhere with the village.
I want to be there for them during summers and breaks and pick them up from school.

I was a teacher before I had my daughter, so it would be pretty easy for me to go back to work once she's in school, but...I would very much prefer not to.

I keep telling DH I'm cashing in my chips, getting a horse and boarding it at the stable close to our place. Just the thought of spending my days riding and hanging around the barn gets me giddy haha

My dream & (& I have attempted it but failed at an interview) is to find a job in DS' school district. This way I would completely have the same schedule as him & make extra $. The only negative is that because I already failed at an interview at his school actually, I'm not sure if they'll ever call me in (it's already felt super awkward with his principal but I do have the the couple of other schools left) so who knows &+ also it's a super small district so they rarely ever have jobs. Before I had thought any school district job would be nice but even surrounding districts have such a different schedule with days, hours & vacations that idk what I would do with him on those days/breaks. There's no places that care for school age kids around here & we don't have an established, trusted sitter so while a good idea, it's still not really feasible.
& ftr, this is definitely not what I saw myself doing before DS. oh if we could turn back time before college days.

I don't know what I will do. I have three years to figure it out, at least. I was an elementary school teacher before kids. I don't really want to go back to that--I don't think I have the emotional strength to be there for a class-full of kids all day and then my own kids after work. Plus, the last school I taught at was horrible and made me scared to wind up in that situation again. I've thought about tutoring, but then I would be working entirely outside of school hours. I don't see myself staying home full-time, but I don't know what I will do.

She's teaching in a very wealthy school district and some of the parents have made her life miserable so she's hoping subbing will remove most of that pressure.

I plan on working in some way with postpartum moms, probably as a postpartum doula. My grad degree is in health and wellness counseling and I've been working on a few different doula certifications.

Yes I've thought about this as well...the flexibility and schedule that matches my kids' would be nice!

I used to want to return to work immediately after my kids started school, but lately I'm thinking I might just enjoy the silence for awhile. My oldest starts kindergarten this fall and it will be 3 years until my youngest starts. I think after spending 8 years of being snack bitch I will be ready for at least a year of some lazy "me" time.

I was a clothing designer but then left my job to stay at home once I had my 2nd child. I'm thinking lately that I will go back to work by the end of next year once DS is ready to start kindergarden. But this plan would involve us moving to a larger city. Right now we live in a somewhat rural area with no design jobs here.

In my mind I think I'll substitute teach or take on some more extensive volunteer positions, but that still feels like a really long way away.

I have an accounting degree so I'm hoping to find something full time for tax season and part time/flexible the rest of the year.

I'm not sure. I have a business degree and have some experience teaching violin lessons, so maybe I'll do that. We might be moving, but it's not definite. If we move, there would be more opportunities for me. I've looked into online WFH and locally there is a business that works with senior citizens, running errands, etc. if there are openings I might look there.

Dude, idk. I'm 30 and I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. I could go to work at a veterinary hospital that is a client of my husband's and eventually become a veterinary assistant but otoh, I live close to a college that has an awesome marine biology program, which is a huge passion of mine. I'm just not sure how I feel about entering that field in what will likely be my mid-30s. It's probably nbd, right?!

I have no plans to return to work. I'm one of those weird people that is looking forward to being involved in the PTA. Me too! I'm just not sure that's in the cards for us financially.

I majored in English with a minor in Journalism, so maybe teach? That's the only thing that stands out to me and I would still need to get my certification which I don't really want to do. My H has a similar education background to you and he does freelance advertising copywriting. If you don't want to do teaching you could look into this.

Ha I don't blame you for wanting to SAH when the kids are older! I would be so happy to just be involved in *something*, but not necessarily work a job. It's nice when you aren't bound to a schedule by an employer. English was my first major but it's a bummer that you can't do much with just an English degree. Maybe you could become a freelance writer or something along those lines?
