I am supposed to go to Europe for work in 1.5 weeks. This is an annual global meeting and has been booked for months. All of the other people in my department are going. The trip will be for 5 days and will be very busy with activities. Every day starts early and ends very late.
I was diagnosed with mono about 2 weeks ago. I still feel terrible - fatigued, sore throats, headaches, etc. I am concerned about all of the travel and feeling crappy once I'm over there. All of the activities are off-site and I won't be able to easily go back to my hotel room and lay down if I wanted to. And if I'm being honest, even if I wasn't sick this is not a trip I look forward to.
So should I suck it up and just go or stay home and take it easy? Please make my life choices for me.

My vote was "Yes, go!" until I read that this isn't a trip you're looking forward to in general. Take the excuse to rest and get well. 100% agree.

Stay home. I remember having mono and I could barely get out of bed for several weeks. International travel with lots of activities would not have been something I would have been up for. So definitely stay home if that's an option!

Agreed with above. If it was a trip of a lifetime or you were so excited I'd go and take it easy, but if you didn't really want to go don't. Mono sucks, hope you keep feeling better.

I would normally say stay home, but it sounds like it's a fairly important trip, will it affect you negatively at work if you don't go ?

I don't think cancelling would affect me negatively - my boss is pretty understanding but you never know. There is nothing substantive about the trip though, its really just a getting to know your colleagues/icebreaker type of trip.

Can you go but not do everything?
I think I'd say "I'll go" (show dedication!) "but, I have mono so I can only commit to some activities each day."

I would talk to your boss about your concerns - if you aren't feeling well and need to go to your room then it's a waster trip anyway. I think you should stay home but I'd run it by your boss.

I had mono as a teenager, and the doc was pretty adamant about me resting and taking it easy for WEEKS. Apparently pushing yourself while recovering from mono can potentially trigger Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which is more common in women and can be totally debilitating.
Talk to your boss and have the doc excuse you if need be. I would not go.

My Dr. told me it wasn't a good idea and ended up writing me a note to restrict my hours. I was pretty bummed about missing the money but I barely got out of bed so it was probably for the best.

I want to float the idea of not going by my boss but he won't be back in the office before we leave. And he's in Africa now so his cell reception is spotty. I hate to do this over email.

I actually did have a mono relapse and it was AWFUL. After that my throat hurt for years whenever I got too tired. You really need to be careful.

I would stay home and rest. Your body needs the rest to get better.

Unless this was a "make or break my career at X company" type trip, I would stay home and rest.

I was set to say Yes, GO ! Europe? of course! But then I saw the mono and I vote stay home. Mono is NO JOKE and all that travel will only make things worse. Did your doc have any input?

I know email isn't as good as speaking with your boss via phone, but if that's the only way you'll get this resolved before the trip takes place then I wouldn't worry too much about it! For what it's worth I voted that you stay home, but I agree with others that I would talk with your boss to see what they think about the situation. Mono isn't some little cold or virus, it would be a waste of time and money for you to fly there only to be cooped up in your room the entire trip.

I vote stay home. I had mono when I was younger and I was sick for about a month. I had the worst sore throat of my life. Mono is awful. Stay home and get better.
