I find the sports nuts parents do a big thing of acting like kids are too old to pick up a new sport after the age of 4. But I spend an inordinate time at hockey rinks talking to strangers and the amount of kids who have never ice skated before middle school and now have amazing stick handling skills is not small. My ten year old tried basketball for the first time this year. Next year, he wants to try football. I feel like if they want to try something new, let them. The amount of things I have learned after being an adult makes me put in perspective that it’s not imperative that kids “do it all” from the start. Just try new stuff, hopefully have fun, and be kind while doing it. And there will always be kids in every sport or activity that are just really innately good at that thing. Like they have the right combination of whatever it takes to be good at that thing. So that’s not really determined by when you start. Then everyone else just needs to put in time to be half as good as them. lol. I started playing soccer for the first time in my life two years ago on a middle age adult rec league and it’s SO fun. And I would have hated it as a kid. I’m coming to the same realization/perspective.

Somehow DS has come out of my own poor kid experience the opposite. I push him to get new things like a backpack or a pair of shoes because little girl Brux didn't have parents who could afford new things at a whim. And DS just looks at me like I'm an alien "I have one pair of shoes, mom. that's all I need." And he still uses the same backpack from 1st grade because "This one is just fine, mom." Can we do a play date at the mall so he can rub off on DS? He had a friend over the other day who sarcastically asked him if he ever heard of the word save. 😂 My kid will save her money but has no problems asking me for everything

My primary concern is raising adjusted human beings when they’re growing up with so much more than I ever had. I think there’s a lot of value in a team working together towards a goal. I don’t want to raise a kid who says, “my mom can write a check.” I want my kid to understand that’s a lot of money and his team is counting on him to do his part. It’s a balancing act. There were no sponsors for rec basketball this year so I’m literally sponsoring every team in the league. But, when my kid comes home with a fundraiser to play hockey in some godforsaken place, I’ll happily share it with people. I don’t think that’s a handout. I am figuring it out as I go, but I’ve met the kids who say “that’s not a lot of money” or “my dad can pay that” and I know I don’t want that. Interesting you should say that. I was just in a conversation about this regarding popcorn sales and cub scouts. A mom was telling MH (the den leader) how the hours spent for the money raised was really not effective. And Mh countered with how it’s also the experience and what the boys learned. She disagreed. But for us, we see it as an opportunity. He has to interact with adults in a cold call situation and explain why he likes scouts and what the money goes to. He uses manners (hopefully), enthusiasm, and has to be brave. Yeah the parents have to do a lot of behind the scenes work to set up the booth etc and I’m sure many would like to just cut a check. But I think there is still a value in having the scouts sell their items and raise the funds. I hope this isn't too weird, but what age is cub scouts through? My DS started boy scouts this year, and he's 11. Anyway, that's neither here nor there, but for scouts he's supposed to come up with a plan to earn money and it's supposed to be for something specific. I don't any details other than that because that is MH's deal, but I do remember seeing where he'd written out goals and plans. We missed out on the popcorn sales apparently.

The high school sports teams in my township fundraise by hosting 'clinics' for their sport for elementary-middle school aged kids. I love this. It's a nominal fee, open to everyone and widely advertised, and doing one of these clinics that are basically like a day camp is a GREAT way for a kid to try out a sport they haven't yet to see if they like it/might be any good at it OR learn some skills that the rec coaches just never had time to teach. I also think it's great for the hs kids to try out teaching the sport they participate in. They do that here, too, but the one year I signed DS for baseball, it stormed, and they had no back-up plan, and they didn't call the parents, and DS sat in the hall for 4 hours. DS refused to ever do that again lol. I said that there were clearly no women involved in the planning of the event. ETA: I do think it's a neat idea. DD1 did the cheer camp one year that the HS cheerleaders put on and loved it even though she has no interest in cheerleading.

This is DS’s last year as a Cub Scout - age 11, 5th grade. If he wants to continue he will move up to Boy Scouts. I don’t know anything about that yet.

I don't think this troop has a cub scouts troop affiliated with it, but I don't know how all of that works. Most of the dads are friends, so I think they have as much (or more) fun with it as the kids.

We actually just banned paying for the high school clinics bc they don’t love the idea of kids paying kids. So the way they’re getting around it is parents giving “suggested donations” to the team GFM.
It all comes back to the GFM.

My ten year old tried basketball for the first time this year. Next year, he wants to try football. I feel like if they want to try something new, let them. My daughter started swim lessons at just under a year old, and kept going until she was 5.5. But she got bored with it, even as she progressed and made it all the way to learning 3 out of 4 strokes. She's also a social butterfly who missed the group setting but who's ADHD made group lessons tricky. She decided she wasn't ready and/or interested in swim team, and wanted to take a break from swimming. As a former swimmer, not gonna lie it broke my heart a little (lol). We still wanted her to be active though. She shot down every team sport we suggested. Every individual sport we suggested. Until we brought up dance classes after I found a studio that offered hip hop classes for her age group. She was all over that. Tried that for the summer, and discovered she liked watching the older girls doing tap & ballet too. So we decided to give it a try. But goddamn do I feel so much anxiety about how "behind" she is compared to other girls her age at the studio. Thankfully she doesn't seem to mind. It just boggles my mind that freaking 6 could be too young to start something. So thank you giving me hope I guess, and reminding me that it's a universal experience.

Ds doesn't do any "extra" baseball stuff. He does the spring rec league and thats it. and at 8 he's already behind and likely won't make it very far. My daughter at age 12 wanted to switch from swimming to another sport and lol to that. You can't just start at that old age. Ugh this is always my rant too. My kid is 9 and I don’t want to sell his soul to one sport but then he’s behind every year in the spring. Which sucks for him and he ends up not wanting to play despite liking baseball. I go on RANTS about the culture of youth sports and someone usually had to pat me on the head and say there there and send me off to whatever the next activity planned is. It’s hard!

I'm putting Tarek in the "go away" box with Jada, Ty, and Amy. Next reality show idea! "Please Go Away Island" Love it. Tell them they're going to be on the next big reality show but actually just dessert them on the island.

Scam goddess is such a good podcast.
I’m sure that will be super embarrassing for Ayo. But…she’s not wrong.

I agree with all this. I don’t think a GFM is the valuable experience for the kid that you and I are thinking of though. She also said they do car washes, movie nights and other fundraisers. These are more what I think of when I think of the “experience ” I was specifically speaking to the GFM not having the same experience to me. It’s a link the parents posts for other adults to give money. I consider it similar to the parents at work selling candy bars to co-workers, I don’t have any strong emotions about it, so I buy if I want don’t if I don’t, but it’s not the kid learning from the experience in those specific scenarios. * My mom made me physically go into the office and do my practiced speech if I wanted to sell GS cookies at my dad’s office as a kid, so maybe I’m just scarred and jealous 😬🤣

But if you can’t make the car wash or you want contribute more, here’s a place.

Also, can we circle back that I’m sponsoring every team in the rec league? Because it’s kind of funny that they all have our names as their team and then they play each other.
I didn’t know that would happen until the first game but I’m never not amused by it.

It was my first thought when I read that Cher. And I forgot to circle back. So I’m so glad to have that mental image now. Ours are local businesses like delis and toy stores and real estate agents. It’s funny how the kids have a preference to what sponsor they get.

But when they asked me to sponsor, I just wrote a personal check. So when MH showed up to the first game and it was H’s Business v. H’s Business, he was like, “um, how much exactly was that check for?” He was picturing me on a shopping spiral, just buying all of them.

One of the McDonald’s franchises sponsors all the soccer teams here so it’s a McDs vs McDs in different colors. They call the teams by different MLS names but don’t put team logos on them. Just giant McDonald’s “M”s.

It is not all that shocking that this wine actor who made his A- list actress girlfriend perform real sex acts on him during a movie, is at it again. It also isn't a shocker that he would team up with the actor/serial sexual assaulter from an acting family to be part of the project. Who is giving them financing for this? Do those people get first choice of victims?
