Fauci made a statement earlier this week giving his blessing for trick or treating so… I think we are good.
Also, I personally feel like putting bags out on a table is just an easier better way to do it regardless of covid. You can still sit there, drink in Hand, and tell kids to take one. Who really likes answering the door every five seconds, holding back the dog and trying to hand out candy?

Took 4 days, but we got DH's positive this morning. DD and I were retested two days ago. So fingers crossed we get results today. We both feel fine.
Interesting tidbit, DOH official told me that Moderna has the fewest reported breakthrough cases in NYS. DH got the Pfizer shot and I got the Moderna. Let's hope it hangs strong as we need one functional parent in this house.

My pediatrician is prebooking vaccine appointments for 5-11 beginning November 4 and I snatched one up ASAP. 11/10 if all goes well. I am so excited. What a world we live in!

I'm so excited to hear about these kids appointments. DD can't until the next age range, but every kid who gets vaxxed is a win. Our older 2 will get it, but that will leave the 3 year old being the only one in our family to not have it. It feels kind of weird but I agree, more kids getting it is always a win

I tired to sign DD1 one up but it looks like they only book them two weeks in advance, so I can't even sign her up for a November appointment preemptively yet. Boo.
I'm also kind of hoping she and I can go together. I'll get my booster once Moderna gets that green light, then we can hop over to somewhere with Pfizer for her. I know she's very nervous, but ready and willing, and I think getting them together would make her more at ease.

Our school district has mass vaccination clinics scheduled for 11/9, 11/10, and 11/17. It makes this feel real! So excited for full vaccination by Christmas.
How are you all thinking vaccination will change your habits/rules/precautions? I know this doesn’t take us back to 2019 - like we’re not going to Chuck E. Cheese the next day. I also know that, for our family that doesn’t have any particular risk factors and lives in a community with a high vaccination rate, we aren’t going to stay at our pre-vaccination level of precautions. But there’s a lot of room between this two extremes, and I’m not quite sure how to navigate it. Like we’ll definitely start doing indoor play dates with other vaccinated friends. Masked or unmasked? Sleepovers? My kid’s birthday is late December and he wants to do a sleepover - can we invite 4-5 kids or should we stick with 1-2? Testing is very easily available where we live, should testing prior to sleepovers/unmasked play dates become standard? I don’t know! I know we just have to muddle though, see what we and our friends feel comfortable with, see how the case rate evolves, etc, but I want to do some advance planning/analysis.

Considering only 2 kids in DS1’s class are taking advantage of the surveillance testing (and the other kid just had Covid), I’m not hopeful of our vaccination rates in the younger group.

I was just at Kaiser UC with DS for a covid test (unlikely but had a fever with what the dr thinks is just a cold), and I asked if they were ready for appointments for 5-11 yos and the nurse said no. That is awesome you have a target date! 🙌🏻

Maybe I’ll try to get my booster when DD gets her first since I’m technically 6 mo out this week and have a blood clotting risk that I figured qualified as higher risk.

I guess it wouldn't have occurred to me to not be comfortable TOTing this year. We went last year when our neighborhood agreed to do the grab-and-go thing with candy on tables outside rather than going to the door. Didn't we decide that it isn't being transmitted via packaged goods? That's why we all stopped wiping down our groceries. We won't be going to the town's Trunk or Treat because there will be a million unmasked people. we hold groceries in quarantine We held our candy in quarantine before class swaps last year 🤷🏻♀️Just talking Not cold groceries obvi

Same. I know no one is stopping me from just boosting myself with Moderna or Pfizer anyways but I want to do what is officially recommended. If a single J&J shot doesn’t end up “counting” as being vaccinated then I guess I would have to do J&J again but with the blood clot risk I don’t want to. Waiting for more info here still. Add me to this list. The NYT email newsletter today was about how the gov is likely missing the mark by not putting out guidance on mixing and matching vaccines. I also am starting to think more about the role of corporate greed/capitalism here. It’s in J&J’s interest to promote a two shot course of their vax over mixing and matching. Why isn’t there more research going into the mixing and matching approach? Maybe because the companies don’t stand to profit as much? I don’t know if that’s the case but it seems like it might be a factor at play. do you want an honest answer? They don't want to back track on any vax. It was approved so it's approved. Research on mixing isn't a priority cause it's not really a great concern to them. They have started talking to people who have mixed. A study on mixing would be a 3rd party interest and not one of the companies to do it. If it were me and I got j&j I would just get a mRNA one now like I'm new. Who is better to speak on your health and needs than me? That's how I feel.

For anyone who is interested, today it took less than 12 hours from starting the process to schedule a PCR test to having results in hand. I'm pretty happy with that, and am glad for certainty on what the non-sick family members can do for school and work tomorrow.

I can't decide what to do about ToT this year. I keep going back and forth. We're planning to go as of now. It's 2 seconds at a door stoop but still outside. My kids even suggested wearing masks all on their own. I think they just really wanna go.

Colin Powell died of “covid complications” this morning. He was vaccinated, according to his family.

Sad post-
I took DS1 to church yesterday for the first time since covid (he’s been to small group things but not a service). He served as acolyte. A handful of his favorite elderly people were lost to covid in the last two years. It was very eye opening for him and he had a hard time the rest of the day.
He asked if I had an appointment for him to get his shot yet because he has a lot of people who need hugs 😢
Since we’ve been doing this for so long now, sometimes I get a bit numb to everything and then something like this smacks me in the face.

This is what I’ve heard from everyone I know with breakthrough cases that they would be in the hospital without the vaccine an acquaintance/FB friend is vaccinated and hospitalized. his pulse ox showed something in the 70s so they called an ambulance (his wife is also sick and they have small kids and they overshare on FB). it is a bit of a wake up call about how bad it likely would have been for him if he wasn't vaccinated. i don't know if he's "out of the woods" yet. we are the same age.

it is interesting that the family specifically included that he was fully vaccinated even in the Twitter/shortened version of their announcement.

Per CNBC, Colin Powell also had multiple myeloma.

hawkward that had to have been a gut punch to hear, but what a compassionate kid you're raising. The kids getting their shots can't happen soon enough. I'm hoping 2 out of 3 will have at least one shot before Thanksgiving. I did kinda block out that the youngest won't be in this age group.
