Is this the dopesick one? For some reason I thought it was a tv series coming out. It looks very interesting to me. And I'm surprised they were able to use Perdue's actual name. Yes! I guess it's a miniseries not a movie. It's all based on real events. They even make fun of James Comey for apparently thinking the AUSA's wanted to prosecute Perdue Farms Gotcha. I see the commercials mostly when I watch Only Murders In the Building (also highly recommend if you haven't watched - we have a fun whodunit guessing thread on the Movies/Books board) and I will probably add it to my queue.

Our school district is melting down. There are a few layers to this. Since the start of the school year, there have been several security incidents and guns found on people outside and near the school (there was one shooting at an adjacent shopping center, but fortunately not life threatening). Today the school is closed for a threat- this is not the first time this year. This is one of the most diverse high schools in VA and has 4000 students. A year ago, city council voted to remove SROs from the school because there were a lot of complaints about racial profiling and I believe there was more awareness of the potential issues that SROs bring to schools (one of which is they are armed)- there are still private security officers in the school. The school board did NOTHING to plan what would happen when the SROs were removed from school so they are like we don't know what to do so did nothing. So city council and the school board have been in a fight. This week, city council made a 10 point actionable plan (IMO, basically doing the job that the school board should have done- I have a lot of negative feels to the SB and SI after poorly managed covid), but in a surprise eleventh hour reversal, decided to bring back SROs. All of that was this week. I think the community (and myself) is pretty freaked out. This is way beyond the level of threat that is normally seen. I'm just kind of spinning.

That is a good point from President Biden: keeping ports operational during nighttime hours dispatches trucks full of goods onto largely open highways which helps speed delivery of goods as trucks avoid traffic Clearly behind, but those roads are clear of truck traffic due to forced shutdowns so OTR drivers actually take breaks and keep the roads safe. Not currently in the industry, but it was a big struggle sometimes for the JIT system the company I worked for used. I really hope they are also looking at every rail yard to expand their hours, weigh stations across the country, etc. Secretary Mayor Pete is all over this, right?

Indirectly current events related, is anyone else watching the movie about the Oxycontin crisis on Hulu? It's very, very well done. It will make you really angry. But it's very well done I want to. I watched The Pharmacist on Netflix whenever that came out and was enthralled.

Failure to plan is planning for failure and all that.

It was already a battle for trucks with Christmas trees around this time of the year. Hoping they can find some balance.

I think, at this point, it's safe to assume she won't seek reelection and simply doesn't care. She'll go be a highly paid commentator on Fox.

This is very good. Many in the media are drumming up the narrative that President Biden is in deep political trouble. The Afghanistan withdrawal was a failure! Biden’s polling numbers have experienced an “epic collapse”! Some in the White House press corps are asking questions along the lines of “Isn’t the president worried he’s failing?” Biden’s poll numbers are down, thanks in part to the delta variant (primarily raging in red states with grossly irresponsible governors), a bump in consumer prices, and frustration over the prolonged legislative sausage-making on the reconciliation plan. But don’t lose perspective. For starters, Biden’s approval rating is in the mid-40s (roughly where President Barack Obama was for much of his two-term presidency and higher than the average approval rating of his predecessor, who never broke 50 percent). Frankly, in such a polarized era, with one side intent on disapproving of the president and the other just as intent as approving, it is extremely difficult for any president to keep approval ratings above 50 percent after any initial “honeymoon.” Moreover, Biden’s policies remain extremely popular. A CBS/YouGov poll released this week shows large majorities support the component parts of the Build Back Better plan. Meanwhile, a CNN poll shows 50 percent approve of his performance while 49 percent do not. A nearly identical margin say he has done more to unify than divide the country. And contrary to the favored narrative — “Democrats in disarray!” — the CNN poll shows that with regard to Democrats and Democratic-leaners, “26% of that group say they see the party as mostly divided rather than mostly united,” lower than the 30 percent of Republicans who say the same of their party. The poll also found that a plurality of Americans (41 percent) favor a legislative package that covers all the proposed social and climate policies over one that does fewer things but costs less. Biden is somewhat at the mercy of events he does not control. Democrats and indeed the entire country are waiting to find out what the two senators with shaky rationales for obstruction want to do concerning the president’s reconciliation package. And while Biden was able to announce extended hours for the severely backed-up port of Los Angeles, the supply chain problems go well beyond one port. As the New York Times reports: “The blockages stretch up and down supply chains, from foreign harbors to American rail yards and warehouses. . . . The pandemic has shut down factories and slowed production around the world.” That means delays in getting products to consumers, as well as potentially higher prices. Several things are clear regarding Biden’s future: First, tackling the coronavirus pandemic so that the economy can return to something akin to normal is fundamental. The good news is that the seven-day average for covid-19 cases is down roughly 12 percent with fewer hot spots. Second, if Biden gets a sizable reconciliation package, the bumpy negotiations will fade in significance; if he does not, he and his party will be in deep trouble. Third, Biden is in a holding pattern when it comes to messaging his package. While he waits for two Democratic holdouts, it is difficult for Democrats to remind the public that, unlike Republicans, they are for the little guy, for making work easier and for making scofflaws pay taxes. Completing Biden’s essential task — passing his domestic agenda — is taking longer than the president would like. If and when the deal is made, Biden will have the advantage in explaining what Democrats are doing for Americans (e.g., making child care and prescription drugs cheaper) and what Republicans unanimously oppose (e.g., making the super-rich pay their taxes, lending a hand to working families). Think of it as though Biden is playing a tied baseball game delayed by rain. It may be frustrating, but it’s far from time to make hyperbolic predictions. The media’s doomsday talk about Biden is greatly exaggerated www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/10/14/media-doomsday-talk-about-biden-is-greatly-exaggerated/

The fact that two fuck face senators have all the cards in their hands is infuriating to me. Absolutely just, makes me sick to my stomach. I know there are myriad reasons for this but fuck I hate that these two assholes get to hold absolutely immense progress back because they want to fuck around.

soooooooooooooooooo someone is sending handcuffs for Bannon right now, right? because hes not in his seat to testify right now
If there are little to no consequences for this, it furthers the entitlement ideas that you get to do what you want so eff everyone else that need to end and Bannon and Patel are really good places to start.

Of all areas, public schools seem like they are going to have the hardest time climbing out of the nonsense of politics from the last year+.
None of the 5 school board members here are seeking reelection. 3 will remain as their terms expire in years coming. So far 4 out of 5 should be represented by reasonable people but I fear one area doesn't have any good choices with the 4 candidates.
The board currently only has one member that is anti-mask (and all other of the like minded agendas). I just can't imagine the dynamic if someone similar is elected in a few weeks.
Our local paper asked them all directly about masks and vaccine mandates as well as what can be improved.

Honestly, Sinema is pretty on-brand for AZ politics. IMO, the only reason she won is because the person who ran against her had been recycled from a few previous races and was insane. AZ is deeply conservative in most parts of the state. I know McCain received a lot of love for his "maverick" reputation, but he was also pretty reliably conservative. That said, he was known for working across the aisle and would compromise.
ETA - she is clearly abdicating her responsibilities toward her constituents and I hope she is (successfully) primaried by someone with a good chance in the general.

Seeing a whole lot of people on twitter not understanding contempt of Congress and the procedure involved, so here's a rundown from the Washington post article Wajahat posted
'After a committee approves a contempt charge, the House must then vote on the matter. Once passed, the contempt referral would then be sent to the Justice Department. It would then be up to the Biden administration — namely, Attorney General Merrick Garland — to decide whether to criminally prosecute an individual for failing to comply with the congressional subpoena. A successful contempt prosecution could lead to Bannon’s incarceration, a fine, or both. He could face up to $100,000 in fines and a one-year sentence in federal prison. Still, a conviction on this misdemeanor offense may not necessarily result in the committee receiving the information it wants and a criminal prosecution could also take years.'
