I hope those companies are treating their workers well, though. If the Longshoremen were to go on strike they could probably get anything they wanted right now.

Incentives for unloads generally works, but depending on the industry, safety incidents go through the roof at 55-60 hours/week. (I know these numbers are debatable but the general rules still exists).

I thought I read that labor was on board with this? - Long Beach has already gone to 24x7. I think anyone thinking of strikes right now has to be careful - there could be a huge amount of blowback involved as well. Delicate balancing act. 'Between the lines: The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) has agreed to have its members work those extra shift to expand capacity. The Port of Los Angeles will expand to 24/7 operations following the Port of Long Beach last month.' news.yahoo.com/biden-works-expand-port-los-090055924.html

Once again, I suspicious that people are silently lurking here and reading our posts. Game designers: You know what these people need?! A politics video game!

But they not feel that way indefinitely.

Uncaripswife, I'm sure labor and management are both keeping track of what's going on now in preparation for future negotiations and leverage, economically and politically. I mean, I would!

The Social Security Administration announced Wednesday that its beneficiaries will see a 5.9 percent increase in their benefit checks starting next year — the largest boost to benefits in close to four decades. The adjustment will be made for 64 million Social Security beneficiaries as well as 8 million Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries. Some Americans receive both benefits. www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2021/10/13/social-security-inflation-adjustment/

I just saw some posts from the CNN reporter that ran the Boston marathon in honor of his daughter who died at 9 months from brain cancer. I am very up in my feelings today already and my gosh, seeing his twitter feed is making me on the verge of full on crying in my office right now. I wish babies and children never had to die.

dc2london Interesting. I get SS death benefits for my oldest and get the COLA every year, I wonder if this larger COLA applies to death benefits too?

The article gives statistics for seniors and for workers with disabilities butnot death benefits. 'The average monthly Social Security payments for retired workers will rise from $1,565 to $1,657 starting in January, according to the Social Security Administration. Workers with disabilities will see an average increase from $1,282 to $1,358 after the increase kicks in.'

Lol yes, fair, but sometimes reporters ask seemingly un-savvy questions for a reporter that are actually questions people who aren't in the briefing room have. "Regular Americans " (I hate that term)
