Come fight about pensions in here.
Or discuss what this week brings.

I am sour on pensions-my dad worked his entire career (private sector) thinking he was getting one and the week after he retired the fund/whatever declared bankruptcy and made no payout. He is able to get a portion from a federal guarantee fund but I would rather be captain of my own ship and direct my own investments.
That being said corporate retirement fund matching programs are a joke. Between delayed work entry due to grad school and student loan debt I will never be fully caught up to where I should be. Hopefully we’re ok in retirement but I am already preparing myself to work a few years longer than I want too in order to ensure that.

There was a deadly shooting at a food truck bar place here over the weekend and it's just so awful. There hasn't been any statement about motive or what the hell exactly happened, but one young woman was killed (random and unrelated to the suspects it seems) and 14 others were injured. This wasn't a "bad" part of town or anything, etc, and it just is exactly why I'm not jumping to go back to in person socializing anyway. I'm so exhausted from the gun violence.

willow that's so awful. I'm so tired. We can't go on like forever, can we? I hope not. It feels so disheartening that our politicians only see $$ instead of human lives when it comes to guns though. I wonder will it change when more of the boomer generation is out of Congress? Will Gen X and Millennials be the ones to make the change? Since we were the first generations to truly feel the beginnings of being scared in our schools after Columbine?

willow I'm sorry your community has been affected by gun violence. In the org I serve on the board of, we’ve had some volunteers and members kind of acting out? Like taking their frustrations out on us (board and committee members). And we’re like… we’re all volunteers here, calm down please.

It really is disconcerting because I would not normally feel unsafe at all in the area where it happened. I just read an article where a business owner next door to this restaurant blamed increased crime on the newer homeless shelter a few blocks away, which is not a great look for him. Especially because there were no members of the shelter at the crime scene, so wtf
Anyway. Fuck guns, fuck all who care more about guns than people. etc.

willow , I know which event you're talking about and it was on our local stations. I believe names of the suspects have been released as well now and that they're in custody. Here, our daily news revolves more and more around crimes - I can remember when a shooting on a local highway was jaw dropping, and now it seems daily and everywhere. And carjackings. As well as shootings in the city forever and ever it seems.

It can have an "othering" effect. There are far too many communities where it is a constant, unending crisis and as wrong as it is, the incidents of violence in whiter and wealthier neighborhoods get more attention. It is probably more helpful to address the senseless daily gun violence across this country as a problem rather than to focus on the fact that some shootings happen in places where middle class white women feel safe.

Oh you are absolutely right, by all accounts. I don’t mean to come off as “not in my neighborhood never!” And I do understand that it also can come off that way. I don’t value this group of victims any more or less than those that are horrifically killed by random gun violence all the time that gets less reported. My reaction was more of a “this just continues to show that nowhere is safe” feeling because of the lack of gun control and the increase in mass shootings. I don’t mean to diminish the emotions of those that live/work etc in areas where the gun violence is constant. I do apologize sincerely for my poor wording.

There was an active shooter situation near the high school 1.5 miles from my house this afternoon. A man barricaded in his apartment claiming he shot his family. The helicopters finally stopped circling so I'm assuming it's been resolved. I really hope he didn't actually shoot his family.

In 2019 my city had the 50th highest crime rate in the US. Now, we're teetering on surpassing Chicago to break into the top 20. Our crime has spiraled completely out of control. It's insane. Our news every morning is basically just a list of shooting and murders from the night before. I just can't with the violence anymore. It's so fucked and horrible and disheartening and I don't even how to process it anymore.

Paging the deficit hawks 'This year is on pace to be one of the most active and costliest years for disasters in the United States. Through the first nine months of 2021, the U.S. has endured 18 separate weather and climate disasters that have cost at least $1 billion, according to the latest report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information. These 18 events put 2021 in second place for the most billion-dollar disasters behind 2020, when there were 22 such events.' www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2021/10/11/billion-dollar-disasters-2021-climate/

As well as shootings in the city forever and ever it seems. The complaint was published last night and it appears to have stemmed from some kind of personal beef between the two shooters -- which is pretty common, I think. It sounds like there were several bar patrons that assisted in de-escalating the situation or at least trying to stop what was happening. The complaint mentioned a patron who kept hitting/kicking one of the shooters after he went down and the shooter was like "Why are you hitting me?" and the patron yelled "Drop the fucking gun!!" and helped remove the gun from the guy. Look for the helpers, and all that. I don't feel bad at all that the guy was being beat up after getting shot, because he was the one that instigated the entire thing.
