Tonight, S made andouille sausage with sauteed swiss chard, over seasoned rice.
Tomorrow might be spinach ravioli
Wed, no idea, S is on dinner duty
Thurs is conferences and sports practices, so we might just get something to-go

Monday: shrimp scampi fettuccini (75% ready from a local meal prep place) Tuesday: hamburgers and oven fries Wednesday: eggplant Parmesan and garlic bread Thursday: breakfast for dinner I didn't make oven fries, I got a ton of kale in my CSA box so I made Julia Turshen's "white pizza style kale" and it was DELISH. It's kale, wilted with garlic, topped with dollops of ricotta and mozzerella, broiled. And then a shower of parmesan, basil, oregano, and red pepper flakes. I skipped the flakes to entice my children, but they didn't like it much anyway. They have terrible taste.

I have to admit. I’ve become a parent that fixes a “kid meal” and an adult meal. I never wanted to be this way! We’ve been so desperate in trying to keep life running smoothly over the last year.. somehow we ended up here 🤦🏻♀️
The vast majority of the time they eat “kid food” and MH and I eat what I cooked. I don’t know how to get out of this hole I dug for myself. 😞

tj here’s something I would like advice on! I can see the path forward to fixing my oldest’s eating habits because he understands the importance of being healthy and can be reasoned with. Plus, he does express appreciation when I cook even though he often doesn’t eat it right now. My youngest is a struggle for me in general (that’s a whole thread on its own). He’s about to turn 3 and completely unable to be reasoned with at this age. Since he’s in the habit of always eating “kid food” and never trying what I’ve cooked.. any tips here to get on the path toward improving his mealtime habits? Ultimately I want to end up with us all eating the same meal for dinner and the kids expanding their tastes from Mac & cheese 🤦🏻♀️

We also do a lot of kid meals. Chicken nuggets, corn dog nuggets, butter pasta. She will eat a vegetable with it which is nice. I’d love to only have one family meal, but there’s a lot going on right now, so I’m just releasing it for now.

charlotte there's a great Instagram page called Kids Eat in Color that focuses on healthy eating habits (she's a nutritionist/dietician) and picky eaters.

Oh! Also on Instagram I follow @drbeckyatgoodinside. Coincidentally, she posted today about something I know ovenrack has mentioned before. That the parent’s job is to decide when, where, and what is for mealtimes. And the child decides whether and how much. I need to work on internalizing that.

Sorry charlotte, had a rough day yesterday and didn’t get a chance to respond. First of all, it will be ok. Sometimes we live in survival mode, and that is ok. He is still surviving and growing and healthy and it’s fine and he’s fine and you’re fine and it’ll all be fine. And yes, work on internalizing ^^ that. As long as he is growing and not losing weight, it’s probably no big deal. But my gosh who wants the fight every night? My recommendation would be to add one thing from your plate each night. So yeah he gets nuggets while you eat a beautiful salmon fillet. And yeah he has a side of Mac while you have a fancy risotto. But go ahead and throw some of your air fried Parmesan asparagus on his plate. Just one spear. He doesn’t like the spear? Cut it into bites. I know he isn’t at a rationalizing age yet, but try to encourage a try bite. You don’t know if you like it if you don’t try it. Chew and swallow one bite. That’s it. If he likes it, he gets more. If he doesn’t, that’s ok. Thanks for trying it! Also remind him that his taste buds change every 2 weeks. And it also takes up to 10 different tries to decide if you like something or not. So keep trying. If you get him to consistently try one new item on his plate, try swapping 2 items in his plate. So he still gets his chicken nuggies, but has to try the risotto and the asparagus. This easily transitions into the idea of always having one thing in the meal you know they will eat. So when you cook eggplant parmigiana, you know he won’t eat the eggplant, but you do know he will eat the noodles. Or when you cook steak and roasted beets, throw some green peas on the side (of everyone’s plate!) Bc you know he will eat those. And remember that nutrition isn’t an every single meal thing. As long as over the course of the day they get enough calories and over the course of the week they get enough varied nutrients it all adds up in the end.

Sorry, that was super long.
I don’t know his personality, but one thing always helped with P. She loved to taste what was mine. So even if I made her something different than what I ate, I would always offer her a bite off my plate.
Also, sometimes we eat the same foods but in different presentations. Like I love a Greek salad. But when my kids were little, they didn’t like their food touching. So they had a pile of cucumber, a pile of tomato, a pile of chicken, and a pile of olives.
And don’t forget the power of the little things. Cut foods into different shapes. If they don’t like French fries, try waffle fries, tater tots, hash browns. If they don’t like baby carrots, try large whole carrots, shredded carrots, matchsticks, medallions, whatever. And dip. Man my kids love to dip. Sometimes when they don’t like a food, I just give them ranch dip. They eat it. Even if it’s gross to eat it with ranch. Whatever.
Sorry. I have lots of food ideas.

charlotte I have a lot of success with getting N to try things by telling her that she can just smell it first, then taste with just the tip of her tongue, then take a tiny bite. I tell her she can spit it out if she doesn't like it. And usually she ends up liking it and swallowing. And if she just smells it, that's ok, too.

What can I throw together quickly for the rest of my family to eat over rice? I don’t have any ground meat so no Korean beef. They had chicken in a curry-ish sauce last night over rice.

Do you still have chicken? My family eats chili over rice, you could do chicken or vegetarian chili. Teriyaki salmon?

I used to make this all the time until N developed a shrimp allergy. It's amazing and so easy: damndelicious.net/2014/04/05/shrimp-fried-rice/

My life’s version of chili takes hours if not overnight to cook. What is this “quickly throw together” chili?
