I was wondering why my budget plan for natural gas (heat, hot water heater, and stove for me) doubled the last few months. Some friends in the UK have said things are kind of messy there right now with various supplies, and heating cost increases are a big part. I'm not sure I'm convinced that inflation is all that transitory.... ... Prices for natural gas, the most common way to heat homes and a leading fuel source for generating electricity, have surged more than 180% over the past 12 months to $5.90 per million British thermal units. Natural gas hasn't been this expensive since February 2014..... www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/home-heating-sticker-shock-the-cost-of-natural-gas-is-up-180/ar-AAOUP9d?ocid=msedgntp

Are we actually going to default on our debt? I have been spiraling on this for days and worrying about what it means for everyone. I'm not even entirely sure how it would affect my own job since it is government, albeit local. I feel as though there are no reassurances anywhere because both sides are being completely intransigent right now. Let me get some research done, but here is my hot take: Your govt job should not be affected, you might be home for a few days and then get back pay for those days. Re: debt. The bulk of the debt is wrapped in T-bills, notes and bonds, which were already downgraded from a risk standpoint in.... 2012/2013ish. Also, we owe China a huge amount of money, but China owes us a huge amount of money too, and is also struggling with their debt. It would make sense for the debt with China to be negotiated and negated. As for the majority holders of Bills, Notes and Bonds? Mostly large companies and large companies don't really like to lose money, so pressure make ratchet up pretty quickly there. Edit Obligatory: The stock market is not the economy, but this move will certainly cause the market to move dramatically. Watch the Dow Jones tomorrow and the resulting hysteria.

This is fun week! The powers that he will play chicken just long enough to send my 401k back to sad territory, my 14YO’s never ending showers are not the cause of my suddenly too high gas bill, and the supply chain antics means I will be paying more for gas and everything in the store (assuming it can get there), and I have to pay more to the postals service for them to give me worse service than I had before.
What a time to be alive.

Iiiinteresting: There is some debate attached to the 14th amendment that the US cannot default on its debt, and in fact, POTUS can raise the ceiling via executive order. link

Selfishly I’m annoyed that my 401k will look like shit because of this. I am close to a break down at work and looking at my 401k balance made me think more seriously about taking a couple years off. But if it tanks I will not feel as free to do that. Minor problems as I’m not actually retiring for 20+ years, but I will be annoyed.

Just keep in mind you have the same number of shares you had last week. They will come back! If it makes you feel better, I lost 40k today.

The UK fuel shortage was so predictable it's ridiculous. They are likely going to have to deploy ay tanker drivers to help distribute fuel. There will also continue to be shortages of food items in certain areas because of lack of drivers.
And finally they don't have enough workers to kill chickens for daily consumption and turkeys for Christmas.
Lots of predictions of this winter reminding people of the winter of discontent. Not a great comparison.

Also a wild white stag was loose in a British town and the local police shot and killed it. If that ain't an allegory for the country, i don't know what is.

But I've read some comments (I know, I know) and lots of British people seem to be under the impression that there are severe shortages like this all over Europe...which just isn't true but easier to believe that others have it just as bad than to accept you made a bad choice.

I don't think he actually believes that. He's going for sound bytes so that FOX listeners will have something to be outraged about. Because many of them will believe it.

Most of the time, when women are having their abortions, the fetus looks like an alien. Regardless, WTF?

elle, Dan Patrick is the absolute worst. That's quite impressive in Texas Republican politics to be worse than Cruz or Abbott, but he absolutely is. So Dowd is definitely an improvement. Not sure how I feel about W advisors running as Democrats, but I don't blame anyone for not associating themselves with the current version of the Republican party.
