Predictably, immigration reform didn't survive the Byrd bath, but it sounds like all is not lost just yet.....

I have a FFMC.
While I feel for the Petito family and its awful, how many MMIW-G/WOC have gone missing and/or been murdered that DIDNT get all day national coverage for a week straight or even a blip on the news? I'm sure Gabby wasnt the only person to go missing. Like the full force of the FBI is at the boyfriends parents house right now. I never used to think about these types of cases like this before but this one for some reason just makes me angry on behalf of BIPOC.

Missing Native women cases get zero attention, and they have an alarmingly higher percentage. These highly publicized cases are always white women.

To that note, I’ve grown weary of all my true crime podcasts (especially Dateline), because 98% of the cases are about white women. If anyone has any recs that aren’t so white-centered, please let me know.

Every time I see her picture, I ask myself what if she wasn't white? When was the last time I saw this for someone who wasn't white? I saw somewhere on twitter there was a good compilation of pics of everyone currently on the FBI missing persons list. Let me see if I can find it again.

I heard the founder, Ms. Grey Bull speak recently on a panel and its incredible what white people dont know about MMIWG and how we just turn a blind eye.

I really like the host, Payne Lindsey. The first season was on Tara Grinstead, and she was missing (suspected murdered) for 10+ years and I think his podcast stirred things up and they finally got a confession. I hope the same for Ashley's family.

Truthfully, I feel that I would be just as mystified and tuned in regardless of the race but I know that greater US population is not, which is so tragic because just look at all the social media resources that helped in this case because of internet sleuths. If only that same brainpower could also be utilized for the BIPOC populations that go missing.

They tend to do multi episode seasons on single cases, but the focus is on marginalized communities in the south. I haven't listened in a whole, but I know the are still producing new episodes.

I commented in agreement with you willow in the thread on GD. It’s how I always feel when a WW missing case goes viral. It’s how I felt with Kristin Smart. And now here. It makes me so angry and sad for the families of BIPOC missing people.

Every time one of these cases comes up, it reminds me how we still don't know what happened to the missing girls (and a few boys) of color* who went missing in DC a couple years ago. Then I search and get frustrated and sad because there isn't any news about them. *I say "of color" because while I'm pretty sure all the missing kids from that time period are/were Black, I'm not 100 percent on that.

It makes me so angry and sad for the families of BIPOC missing people. There's a missing Black grad student in the area. And all he's getting is a once a week short blurb in the local paper. I really feel for his family and hope they are able to find him soon.

Someplace underneith is mostly about missing women and is doing a lot with non white cases.

But, I learned so much about residential schools, their long-term impact, the 60's scoop where they were just adopting indigenous children into white families en masse. And all of that is the backdrop of this family tragedy. Like I cannot recommend enough.

Not a podcast series, but listen to the “A mess to be reckoned with” episode of This American Life and then go read/listen to Yellow Bird. True crime story following Lissa Yellowbird. Through her, the book tells a story of the high rates of disappearances and deaths among indigenous populations.

There is also the story of the missing grad student.
ALSO Feminist News on FB had a story about a WOC who was the same age as Gabby, from the same area, who went missing in Nov 2020, and the trials HER family went thru to just TRY to get agencies to help them. She was recovered in March of this year because a CITIZEN called in about a car parked weirdly for a few days.

dc2london - I'm glad she got questions about it, I hope something is done immediately. That is not how human beings should be treated. For any reason.

I generally cannot do true crime because at a certain point I get past the curiosity factor and just get depressed about how often women and children are subjected to violence. And like you all said, how many of those stories are totally ignored.
So far, I can only hang in there with the Murdaugh family because there's so much going on that I am still curious.

Why are none of the talking heads asking the reps about this? Tapper is interviewing Rep Lujan.
those agents need to be fired post haste.

I can't tell if this is a good development or not after reading the article?
Like I agree with this part:
On Monday, an Arkansas man said he decided to file a lawsuit to test the constitutionality of the Texas measure after reading a news report about Braid’s declaration. Oscar Stilley, a former lawyer convicted of tax fraud in 2010, said he is not personally opposed to abortion, but believes that the measure should be subject to judicial review. “If the law is no good, why should we have to go through a long, drawn-out process to find out if it’s garbage?” Stilley said in an interview after filing the complaint in state court in Bexar County, Tex., which includes San Antonio.
Buuuuut, then I read this:
“If the state of Texas decided it’s going to give a $10,000 bounty, why shouldn’t I get that 10,000 bounty?” said Stilley, who is currently serving his 15-year federal sentence on home confinement.
