why would her office feel the need to say that? how many people are calling in? 💀 “ Norton said a member of the public accused her of letting the zebras free by pointing out that she has historically valued the principle of “consent of the governed,” or the philosophy that a government’s right to use state power is justified only when consented to by the people or society over which that political power is exercised. Norton said it’s true that she values that philosophy, particularly in her fight for D.C. statehood. She added that she opposes unnecessary fences, too.”

The zebra thing is making my day! I do hope they get them rounded up safely. Apparently they are ornery critters.

Hmmm....a seemingly random and unprovoked denial like this, makes me think she actually did have something to do with it.....

fatpony One of my coworkers brought up a good point that I can't find an answer to at the moment. It may be just us lawyers parsing words extraneously as we can sometimes do, but the guidance we've read says that it is "businesses" of 100+ employees, not simply "employers" with 100+ employees. Does a local government agency constitute a business for that definition? That is the question we have.

I'm going to have to unfollow my governor (ND) on FB. I just can't see his shitty posts and then all the comments in support of his shitty mindset. I want to block everyone. He is no longer useful for updates on Covid related stuff.

I just am curious if we do meet the definition of business. I assume so since it will be under the umbrella of OSHA which would apply to us.

TW 9/11 related: How would you feel about your five year old learning the details about what happened on 9/11 at school? I was a bit startled when my child told me how 2 planes crashed into two buildings and a big explosion killed 3,000 people. I know we have people in our community who lost loved ones on that day and I definitely think it's right to observe the day, but this feels....not age appropriate. When I was teaching we talked about brave first responders who helped people in a really sad emergency and that people died but we celebrate our country and our freedom. I just...don't think the details of the attack need to be shared with the kindergarten children yet?

DS was in kindergarten last year and they didn't go into any details and I honestly wasn't planning on going any further into it with him this year. 5 feels very young for that information.

I agree it is too much. MH and I had a plan in place last year when the oldest was in 1st grade (he was 6) but turns out they didn't say anything at school so we left it alone. He didn't mention it today after school so I think they didn't again. MH and I have a very hard time talking about it with other adults. I can't imagine a 5 yo. I know they've had hard convos with kids about historical events. Like he came home last January with questions about the MLK assassination. But not this. Not yet.

We are normally very frank and honest with our kids about current and historic events. We told them about George Floyd in age appropriate language. When January 6 happened, we told them what was going on in age appropriate ways. They know that war exists and a general idea about what it is, and that we are helping people leave Afghanistan and why. But whhhooooooooo boy I was not ready for my 5 year old to tell me about Shanksville. Or at least give the parents a heads-up that you're talking about this and what you're saying.

I watched part of Memory Box on msnbc the other night. It’s still hard. Also there was Pentagon and PA footage I hadn’t seen/couldn’t remember. C saw a tiny bit (people talking not actual footage) and we talked but I still at almost 11 try to cull what footage she sees or how we discuss. I don’t think they’ve actually talked about it at school yet except in the most vague terms.

I think about how traumatic it was for me as an 8th grader to watch happen live at the time, even when I was thousands of miles away. I think it is fine to edit details for children that aren’t teenagers for sure.

Woof. That’s too much for a kindergartner. And the footage from the day… that was traumatizing as a 21yo, I don’t ever want my kid to see it 😔

Way too much for K kids. I don't think they said anything about it today at DD1'S school, she would have brought it up with they did.
It was so traumatic to watch live. I remember parents frantically pulling kids out of school throughout the day. I know I was 4 hours away, but same state so it felt close to home. I don't know, that still haunts me.

Anyone else googling their antivax friends' or relatives' companies to see how many people they employ? Yup. And then checked on their social media (I have them hidden). They are not doing well.

Way too much for K kids. I mean it’s still too much for my 43 year old self honestly. DD is in 5th grade. They did talk about it today and apparently a classmate who is obsessed with history did a presentation. DD came home with lots of questions and wanted to know where I was when it happened. I mean she is 10 and it was still hard but was ultimately a good conversation. At 5 that would be a nope.

I would definitely expect it to be age appropriate. I don't think DD covered it in 3rd grade today, but they also have a sub
We went to Shanksville a few years ago, I think DD was 7. We tried to focus her attention on the first responder stuff and the people that helped. She's very inquisitive but also very sensitive. It was a little difficult because I'm not normally a crier but I was a mess. MH had been years ago before there was a museum too. We threw basically all our money at the gift shop at the end in a mess of emotions

There are 20-ish states with waivers, so we have our own state offices and not subject to OSHA.

Kindergarten is so young to be hearing details about 9/11. I’m pretty frank with my kids about current and historical events, but at the same time I try to shield them from some things because there’s such a short period of their lives where they’ll still have that innocence about some of the terrible things that can happen.

That sounds like too much. I’d expect that level of detail for my 3rd grader, but would want more control of the narrative for a kindergartner.

I've been very careful about 9/11 talk around my kids because DD2 gets anxiety about flying anyway. If she knows hijacking and crashing/ flying into buildings is a possibility, our trip to the US each summer will get much more stressful. She's 8 and I figure I'll address it in a few years when she can put it into context better. I think details of the attack are a bit much for 5-year-olds, but it depends on how it was said. And honestly, it might have been a necessary conversation because I'm sure some kids are seeing footage from the attacks on the TV at home. Still, a heads-up to the parents would have been good.
ETA: Well, my plan to wait a few more years went out the window. The front page of the newspaper had a big picture of one of the Towers starting to come down, so of course they saw it and asked what it was. Le sigh.

Yeah, no to a 5 year old getting all of that information. I thought about asking our kiddos to wear red, white and blue, but never sent the message home. 🤦

My thoughts are with us all today as we remember, and especially with those who lost family and loved ones. It feels like both yesterday and a million years ago, somehow.

We have a festival on our block today and the Capitol is nearby so the 9/11 flyover went directly overhead. People were fucking terrified at first, especially the kids. Like one guy realized what it was and started yelling to tell everyone because people were frozen in place. Woof.
